Well, they have enough inventory for now is what the article is really saying. Its not like its going away yet. I've used a lot of VR headsets and the Vision Pro is the best one I've ever used, period. Its too bad its too expensive for most. It really is an amazing headset.

Specs are only part of it. For one, it’s locked-down to all hell; my buddy’s kid has a quest and he plugs his Switch into it, and he shares it with his little brother. Second, it’s single user! If he wanted to let his kid use his AVP, well nope, except in a lame demo mode.

Not being able to share a device that cost that much is ridiculous. It could easily have user accounts, and why no HDMI or similar pass-through? Want to connect to your windows work laptop for a big screen? Nope..

I went in to the Apple Store on Lincoln Rd in Miami a couple of weeks ago to try it out. The answer from an Apple employee was that I had to book an appointment to test it. The table where the units was kept was totally empty from other people testing it. So I guess I could have tested it if there would have been any interest from apple. I have a busy schedule so I left the store and never booked any appointment. I usually buy everything they release. Apparently not this time.

Be funny if the extra AVPs ended up like "Super Bowl Winner" shirts they make for both teams ... but one team of course loses, so those shirts end up in some far off land

At this point all they need is one display unit per store and two or three units in stock that will be bought and returned. Maybe some new boxes and accessories for repackaging.

In the meanwhile they will be waiting on someone to come with a great new direction to take this product. Like others pointed out before, Apple Watch used to be a fashion item before it became health oriented. All we need is one of the beta testers to come up with an idea. Direct yours at tcook@apple.com.
Apple Watch was never a fashion item. Apple positioned it the first few weeks as a fashion item so that it would become acceptable to wear (“if Beyoncé wears it so can I”); that thing is way too ugly for anyone ever considering it a fashion item.

And if it is going to be a fashion item, how about we get some more interesting hardware designs?

Everyone wearing them looks like a member of the Borg Collective

We have language for a reason. To communicate to each other. And for that reason words matter. Saying something is a “turd” in the English language at least communicates a specific view point that isn’t really open to much interpretation.

Not Having “value to you” is one thing. Defining it as a turd in the English language is objectively wrong. Especially as the forum we are on (tech enthusiasts?) would infer that something being a turd would mean it was a terrible device. If you are going to say that then qualify your statement.

Language matters… dont use common phrases if you have your own unique interpretation that no one else is privy to. It’s pointless.
So, comparing something to a “turd” is my “own unique interpretation” and now one else understood it? Doubt you would have objected if that was the case.

Language DOES matter. If my statement of opinion isn’t open to much interpretation, it’s because I did not intend for it to require interpretation. You want to talk about pointless? Stating an ambiguous opinion would be pointless, but it sounds like that is what you would prefer.

I think my statement about the device’s value to me more than “qualifies” my opinion but then again, I‘ve been “qualifying” my opinion of the market viability of this device in MR forums since well before launch, and the launch did nothing to change it. Thinking you are somehow “owed” qualification of a negative opinion without also asking those with a positive opinion to qualify it is at the very least, dishonest.

Lastly, you don’t get to choose how I express myself. You can choose to disagree or even dislike the manner in which I express myself, but condescension will get you nowhere.

Well, there's revenue.
Which is meaningless without mentioning profitability, or the lack thereof, which is never mentioned regarding the AVP.
Also why I didn't mention it. I've heard though that it's around half of the retail price... if that's true. Lets just assume for sake of argument that it is, and that Apple makes $25 million per month from the headset...

For something that was touted as being the future of computing, I would think that would be enough to keep making it.

No wonder Apple is so cautious and boring with their products these days, if they think that much money isn't worth bothering. I can't believe they haven't discontinued the Mac Pro yet... it must be killing them to not be selling 1 million per day.

Might be the best, but if you have very little software to use, it is. A tech demo and nothing more.

Ridiculous. Apple doesn't do contracts where they have to keep buying stuff they're not selling. They're notoriously horrible to work with as a supplier.

In any case, nobody is buying these things. People don't want them, most of the ones they sold are gathering dust at some true believer fanboi's house.
AVP is hitting all of Apple's projected numbers so what's more likely...Apple is shuttering an expensive but successful (by their own standards) product after less than a year or that they are switching up suppliers to get a better deal on lower cost components for a cheaper, mass market AVP in 2025?

It's ironic how misguided some of the iFaithful were trying to equate this disaster to the launch of the original iPhone. Saying illogical things such as: "nobody liked the iPhone... it was missing features, etc."

In fact, the Vision Pro's development, launch and subsequent attempt at sales were nothing like the original iPhone. Stop the nonsense.
Exactly. I was a day one owner of both devices. It was nowhere near the same thing. The iPhone was instantly integral to my life immediately, even with its flaws. The AVP was not.

Yeah, Apple. Toss all the current blueprints for this product. Go back to the drawing board. Redesign the product from the ground up. Make it more affordable. Make the battery last longer. Make it less clunky. Get it right. You have the resources to make it happen, thanks to loyal customers like me and a bunch of others here on Macrumors.
Even if they do all the things you listed, they still haven't given us a use case for this thing. Seriously, what is the point of it?

They didn't launch any games with it. They have only added a couple of sports clips and a 10 minute movie for content in almost a year.

I don't understand Apple's strategy with this thing.

Shame but expected. I still believe VR is going to be in every household some day, but certainly not while it's 4k for clunky technology. It's sort of like the Newton was discontinued and then 12 years later we got the iPad.

The real shocker here is that Tim Cook thought VR was ready for any sort of mass market.

So I guess now the question is will Apple buy back AVP units sold because it would be crappy if Apple didn’t buy back a product with no future/developer support. It would anger a lot of these longtime Apple customers who purchased the AVP for an outrageous price only to get shafted by Apple.

He's really cracking at the seams trying to figure out "the next iPhone" or something even close

They can only cost cut and "services revenue" everything to a certain point until the growth train runs out of track
Cook is a bean counter who has performed well for the shareholders but is not an innovator or a visionary. I am hard-pressed to think of anyone currently in management who is.

Yeah, anyone comparing any new future product from Apple with the first iPhone should just take a wait and see approach from now on rather than blindly defending any new product just because it came from Cupertino. The market decides and sometimes the market can decide rather quickly.

Agreed

I've long suspected anyone making the iPhone comparison either wasn't around for it or simply didn't have one when they first came out

It was a tech device revolution that has basically never been equaled before or after

We could probably find some things subjectively close if we tried I suppose, but nothing springs right to mind maybe other than "internet access with AOL" type of stuff

It would be nice if Apple actually gets back to beta testing their half baked software releases. Probably won’t happen because they are the google of new products that become discontinued overnight.

The price/value proposition was way out of whack on this product. Insanely innovative but not a good value for the customer.

I’m patiently waiting for AR glasses that act as a well-polished HUD (heads-up display) for random activities: driving, exercising, cooking, as a supplement to my computer monitors, etc. I don’t want it to be mediocre at everything - I want it to be great at providing simple text and graphics overlay so I can still enjoy what I’m doing.
