August seems unlikely to me. It would interfere with their education sales promotions for that time of year. After that concludes in September would be a better launch time.

Funny how as time passes, all those people who were absolutely convinced that the 5.5" iPhone doesn't even exist seem to have changed their tune. It's happening people, stop being weird about it.

The iPhone 5 came out in September. I'm on a 2-year contract so if iPhone 6 does come out in August, AT&T better let us upgrade without penalty!

AT&T owes you nothing.
You willingly signed a contract to get a subsidized phone.
Now you want to upgrade to the latest with no penalties?

I'd say if you're lucky, they will let you upgrade at the standard upgrade/contract cost but will make you renew your contract for 2-3 years from the point you upgrade.

Entitlement is alive and well in the new millennium.

Unveil both?

I imagine, if this is true, they would unveil both but make the 4.7 available immediately and the 5.5 available at a later date. Hopefully anyway.

There's no evidence that the 5.5" does exist, but I'm just hoping it does :) I want the choice between 4.7" and 5.5" having owned the Samsung Galaxy S4 last year I didn't mind the screen size of 5" it was the quality I didn't like.

August would be fantastic for selfish reasons.

You have to think that they won't obliterate the 4" screens. Just based on the rumors we've heard so far, I'd bet we'll see the 5c, 5s and a 4.7". I'm still iffy on the existence of a 5.5" just because it's such a hard usability problem to fix for users and a headache to code for yet another screen size.

The 4.7 will do me but I'll be mightily annoyed if the 5.5 has additional features above the larger screen size.
I don't think they would do that. They put the retina Mini on the same level as the Air. No reason to reverse that trend.

It doesn't take a full two years to become eligible for the full upgrade discount.

The problem with releasing in August is you have a lot of people who bought a 5 on release day (like me) and they won't be quite eligible for an upgrade yet. By the time we are upgrade eligible there will probably be a month long wait on delivery.

Update - Sorry just noticed someone else commented you don't have to wait the full two years. Didn't realize that. In that case bring on August. I'm ready.

Total nonsense. Apple is not having an iPhone event in August.

That's a dead month (at least in the U.S., where Apple is based and conducts its launches). Everyone in the U.S. is either in the last throws of their summer vacation or frantically getting (the kids) ready for back-to-school. Attention spans for everything else are at a minimum.

No sane company, with a huge dependency on the U.S. market, launches a new product in August. They wait until after Labor Day, which is Sep 1 this year. And no company with any media savvy has a major event one or two days after Labor Day because of travel constraints. So that puts the earliest practical day for an iPhone announcement event at Sep 9 or 10. Going on recent history, that would put an iPhone launch at Sep 19, again at the earliest, and far far away from August.
Back-to-school is one of the major times of year for the retail industry. It's up there with Black Friday and the holiday season in terms of sales. Apple is a retail company. There's no reason to suspect that Apple sees the back-to-school timeframe as a "dead month."

new iPhone 6

I will wait for the larger-screened iPhone, 5.5 inch. The mere .7 increase in screen size for the other phone isn't worth the trouble or time for Apple to make it. Lets hope they hire someone from Samsung who can help them get over their production problems in producing a larger screen and release the 5.5 in september as well.

since the iphone 5 launched in sept and the majority of people are on a 2 yr, why would apple launch a month early when most people aren't eligible to upgrade? apple knows this. don't see aug happening since it won't make sense to push as many units as possible.

Looks like the iPhone 5S will be my last iPhone for a long while until they decide not keeping the 4" model was a big mistake.

I can understand that there's pressure from the market for them to respond but why not be clever with the current 4" model? Borderless screen? Remove home screen button?

*sigh*

Because it's not about having a smaller phone -- it's about screen real estate. People want to be able to see more and do more with the screen they're presented. Besides increasing the size of the screen, the only option is to increase the pixels and scale the resolution so everything is smaller, but that doesn't really solve the problem for people that want to see more on their screens. For example, videos, images, etc. would still be 4" diagonally no matter how high the resolution goes.

That said, we don't yet know what Apple's going to do. Either the 5C or the 5S (or maybe both) will continue to be sold for the next year at least, and it's certainly possible that Apple creates new flagship phones in 4", 4.7" and 5+" versions in the near future.

Yes, it's the peak buying season for back-to-school items is August, but it's a terrible time to announce a new product, not just for Apple, for anyone. You never see companies announce new consumer electronics in Aug. because few are listening. If back-to-school is the target then it's announced no later than June. Otherwise they wait until after Labor Day.

I think we are likely to see a 4" 6c, a 4.7" 6 and a 5.5" 6x. (Okay, maybe not 6x but I haven't seen a lot of other suggestions for the suffix)

Maybe the 5.5" model will also have 2 GB of RAM which would help support the extra $100 price increase.

I certainly hope that the 4.7" and 5.5" come standard with 32 GB of NAND with upgrades for 64 and 128. One can only hope that the storage upgrade price tiers are reduced from $100 each to something more palatable, I'm not keeping this thing for ten years.

Good point. You could be right. The "unveil and launch in August" part seems less likely than unveiling in July to launch in August.

If they do launch early I hope carriers reduce the contact period by one month for those of us that have an iPhone 5 from September 2012.

Never really made sense to release a new iPhone in early 2015. They would be missing out on having a new product for the holiday season. Makes WAY more sense for them to both come out this year.

I can't imagine Apple releasing this in August. Also if the 4.7 & 5.5 WERE ready at the same time, Apple would never release them at the same time. Thats exactly the type of marketing strategy they have always avoided. For good reason too.

They release 13" and 15" MacBook pros at the same time.

iMacs?

MacBook airs?

iPads?

Why not this at the same time?
