I've been a member since 2011 and I have never seen so much racism, hate and bigotry as I've seen the past couple of weeks regarding this Beats acquisition. It's downright sickening and I'm dismayed that Macrumors staff is allowing it to go on.

I don't know, maybe it's the way I was brought up and the friends I've had over the years, but rap and ghetto are not the first thing I think of when I hear Jimmy Iovine's name or Dr. Dre, they've been involved in music ranging from hip hop to rock and a lot in between. Both of them clearly have their fingers on the pulse of today's youth. And if you don't think that Apple needs to attract that demographic then you have no clue about big business.

While Apple still makes excellent products they're not as "cool" as they once were. By no means am I saying they're in any kind of trouble but they do need to think ahead. I'm sure everyone here (or most everyone) would agree with the statement that iPhones are better than Samsung's offerings, yet Samsung is the company that's looking cool these days. Why? One word...marketing. Apple has to step up their marketing game before they become irrelivent to the 30 and under group.

Before you all bash Iovine and Dre let's just see what happens over the next year or two. I believe Apple will still produce a class product as they have done for the past decade. I'm actually excited to see what this new Apple will give us in the not too distant future. I believe that Jimmy Iovine is exactly the kind if guy who will have no problem lighting a fire under Tim Cook's or Sir Jony Ive's ass. I think someone has to do it and this just might be what turns Apple back into the juggernaut they were just a few short years ago.

You may scoff all you want but Iovine might be the closest we come to having someone like Steve Jobs back at Apple. The guy has vision, guts and the balls to compete in big business. I can go on and on but I'm sure you all already get the idea.

But please stop with the bigotry and racism. It really is shameful.

THIS x1000 ^^^

Lmao@people saying beats is ghetto and apple shouldn't associate with them. When was the last time y'all been in an apple store?Beats headphones are displayed all over the store.

You were the one who randomly brought up race. You make statements like.

and

Then when someone calls you on it, you accuse them of playing a race card?

Fair enough. But when I see stuff like this will make Apple more "culturally aware" or basically anyone who has reservations about this is really a closet racist it makes my blood boil. That to me is injecting race. What exactly does Apple need to be culturally aware about? Nobody yet has come up with a credible/legitimate reason why this is a good idea. As Ben Bajarin tweeted, it's just lipstick on a pig.

People need to put the price in perspective.

Apple can afford this acquisition regardless of your definition of its "success".

Facebook paid $19 billion for WhatsApp.

An app people, an APP.

The lack of merits on this acquisiion is so obvious and not racism relatd.

I've never critiquized Dre or Lovine on what they fashion, they music preference, or how cool are Beats, but the image on mediocre quality (dont last, and dont sound as good as 1/3 priced Bose or Sennheiser), and lack of popularity of Beats Music (just 111K suscribers), are clear warning signals this *deal* as the Beats Earphones is Over Inflated in price, and will not offer tangible benefits Apple cant reach just improving what they actually have (as a premiun line of Earpods will kill Beats in so facto), and aquiring (or hiring) crowd sourced music listing platforms as Groveshark (or th people behind, which have many times more users than Beats music).

Finally Iĺl consider contracting lovine after he separates Beats later this year, but not buying a Zombie corporation with dying or volatile market.

I'm sensing a lil racism here,( Hey guys tone down that hate) Dre Dre created something that was able to cross over and attach itself to an iconic brand such as Apple. His entrepreneurship should be lauded and praised Dr Dre should be given props and yata boys.

If this was Samsung instead of Apple people would be (rightly so) laughing their arses off. Pretty sad and pathetic that Apple thinks they need to buy cool. And what is this culturally aware nonsense? Make a great product and people will buy it. Don't pander to specific races/demographics.

It would make more sense to reserve judgement prior to confirmation of any of this.

A final word:

Is Apple an Hip-Hop Culture corporation?

From my persepctive, not, Apple brand and devices dont belong to a peculiar culture, but to all cultures.

i dont citiquize those that loves expensive mediocre earphones because they feel identifid with Hip Hop they like, I dont like Hip Hop, and is very probable most people here dont like my music preference, but does apple must adopt a Hip Hop culture, or a Rock Culture, or a Classic music culture just to be Cool?

Apple is not a brand on a pariticular music cultur, its a brand on every music culture, and not only music, all other art expression, as weel the top Technologies not related to culture that are developed on apple devices.

What. Was Steve Jobs the only "culturally aware" person at Apple ?

Jobs wasn't culturally aware -- he made the trend others followed. Now it seems that Apple wants to be a hanger on to whatever some other company makes trendy. So to answer your question, is it wasn't rhetorical, yes. Tim Cook is and always has been a bean counter.

I just don't see 3 Billions dollars worth of anything in this acquisition.

Not with the Beats product line, 'cultural awareness', or anything that Iovine nor Dre could bring to the deal.

It was the Apple culture that built Beats, in a way Beats has always been a part of Apple.

Yep most people on this forum do not have a clue the designer of the beats headphones was the one who hired Jony Ive.

I cannot believe I am saying this (look at username and registration date).... but realistically both companies are in the business of selling products with a high mark up in exchange for "style" and "luxury". I think many people in this community fail to understand real business.

Truth is BOTH Apple and Beats purposely sell their products with a high mark up knowing consumers will buy them based on perceived value.

Just had to mention this highly unrecognized fact in this thread.

What does "culturally aware" have to do with products...

I don't think everyone listens to rap, do they? I do a little, but still, there are a lot of genres!

Iovine created interscope records, which has signed big artists in almost every popular genre. Check it out...

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_current_Interscope_Records_artists

He has a lot of the whole music industry covered. They need someone 'culturally aware' to look after the music side of their business. Plus dre has produced for multiple artists across different genre.

--------

Lol at everyone overreacting again. Iovine an dre will only be involved in the music side of things i.e iTunes.

This is gonna be great for apples music business!!

Culture awareness OMG! Jimmy thingy is just an old fart, over sixty, what the ******* does he know about what we like? He is just an other old hippy from 68' striving to be hip again!!!! Looking like a grandpa there thinks he is in twenties does not improve the impression -Obviously he is seeking $$ his for retirement payday which is way over due. The Dr. who is not a doctor, but a o'l gangster rapper who might need an ear doctor as hearing can't be right that is for sure.

What is happening in Apple, focus on product development and do less "Joker marketing". We are lot of diehard fans, but do not get carried away as one thing is we pay top dollars for the products another thing is completely disrespect us with jokers and gangsters.

Beats simply just junk make in a cheap crappy factory in China, sold to an extreme overprice. Is that what Apple products is now? Then i am history in this shop.

Just take the latest brand awareness polling, Apple is no longer no. 1 !!! Google is... You are loosing it Mr. Cook and it is going fast. -Think the first logo with Newton, the Apple is falling!!!!! Gangsters and Jokers will not get the pole position back. As many will simply go elsewhere included undersigned as a ex. Apple fan .

Can I recommend chamomile tea? You seriously need some calming.

I'm not sure if you realize the irony in your statement. Your description of Beats is the exact, not similar, but exact same description some people use to describe Apple.

Every thread on MR concerning Beats has exposed the worst of what MR can be. Even Samsung threads aren't this distasteful.

Steve Jobs would never..... oh wait

Image

Mmm. I loves my black and red U2 special editions. They still work!

I say let Apple do what it wants (since that's what's going to happen anyway). Just start saving up some dough for the next thing you see that you decide you like when it pops up in a keynote. That usually works for me, and meanwhile keeps my blood pressure in normal range.

Am not a hippy so tea won't do it....:D

Used Apple since 1997, so I know what you mean as been around when Apple only worked with Apple etc. Apple did change that, but if you look at Beats they simply do not get the basic principle, that Jimmy thing learned and did in the 70's when he made music for John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen etc, it is the artist there make the sound not the equipment!!! Seriously do you mean Beats is unbiased in the sound quality? I will leave the design as subject to individual taste. (good or bad)

The thing is we all like apple's products and we used them everyday. The reason is the deliver unbiased quality in function and design. I can't believe its the 111k subscribers they look for, and it can't be the sound quality, so what is it Apple sees in a old hippy and a gangster? Culture Awareness??

You also need to take in to consideration Apple is just USA, its a global company and how it constantly had adjusted it self to be attractive to a broad audience with a unique defined style and identity. -There might have been some hippy in the early days but... this is 2014

Maybe you should take your blood off the boil. You jumped right into this with both feet. You've created the double standard here.

We've agreed on any number of things, but this will not be one of them.

----------

Hey I'm not the one suggesting Apple needs to be more "culturally aware" or that acquiring Beats is a good idea because it will potentially give them access/make them look "cool" to a certain demographic. To me that IS pandering. And is not even remotely the same as heavily promoting exclusive content.

As I have said, don't complain about double standards if you live by them yourself.

The degree of junkiness and the extremity of the overpricing can be debated, and the crappiness of the factory is almost certainly overstated, but in answer to your question: yes.

I think it would be just as ugly if Apple was buying Bose.

For me the tone of the entire thing was set by that video that was initially leaked. It was trashy, plain and simple, and far below the type of thing you'd expect to see in relation to Apple in any way. I don't know anything about hip hop, nor do I know anything about the Beats individuals involved. I saw that video and it left an impression.

I honestly don't know much about Beats except I equate their headphone product with junk. Last Christmas I literally laughed out loud when I heard one of my extended family members bought Beats headphones for several people. I'm sure I'll be labeled as a racist now since I don't like them. I've read some pretty simplistic accusations like that in past days, and it's always easier to label someone and move on.

What a joke. The only talent Dre and Iovine have is being world-class Goniff's. They even managed to get the better of Monster Cable, the designer of the Beats scam. Show's you how incredibly bad management is at Apple in 2014.
If this deal goes through, mark These words. Jimmy Iovine will be running apple in less than 5 years .

I'm amazed the sheer amount of hate that's going on here.

But then again that's normal before anything big - the iPod was royally hated by MacRumors members when it came out, the whole internet thought that iPad was the stupidest name ever and it was "just a big iPod touch."

Something I've learned is that the more controversial an idea Apple has, the more likely it'll be a good decision :p

That is 100% correct!

Same thing about iPhone, OS 9 -> OS X, PPC -> Intel, etc.

I actually believe the culture reference here was to popular culture - i.e. what the kids are buying these days.

.
I wonder what Jonny I've thinks of those huge plastic headphones with logos all over it.

Made in China crap designed by the worst of US "culture". Actually, that probably will sell a lot.

I have been in a number of Foxxconn factories, as well as Quanta, Asus Tech and others in China they are for sure not bad factories at all. I have also been in one factory the was producing for Beats, some 6months ago, and that is what my statement is based on -actual facts and not presumptions based on what is written and said in the biased media's.

Sometime ago there was rumor on a Apple Television in "corporation" Loewes, there was even talks about Apple would buy the company, at that time the tone in the postings was hmmm somewhat different compared to Beats. There was not many there could not see the synergy in design and desirable of owning the products there "could" come out of it. -Yes it was all about product and design and two brands there represented quality and lifestyle there was appealing. Even I was exited and could picture how my home was fitted with a TV there just "did it all in best Apple way".

I see these comments on people being tagged racist. How bizarre and cheap is that card to through -out of arguments?. So that means I am a racist because I do not like Beats products and cannot see how they ever would fit with Apple.
