Apple lost title of worlds most valuable brand to Google, Apple has got to do something to restore it. That includes staying up date with culture.

I think the old iPod commercials should be brought back :D

The only place beats could be useful is in iPhone and Mac as when Beats first came on the scene it was in laptops and as such they had far superior sound quality to other laptops of the time.

This article annoys me though, how has Apple struggleswith marketing ? Their ads have become the copied template for every tech company in the industry.

Like others have said, Apple carries prestige and quality in it's hardware, should this go through that must not change.

It seems that no one knows exactly why Apple is buying Beats or if this deal is actually going to happen.

I think Tim Cook wants Jimmy Iovine to be the CEO of Apple. I have a hard time believing that Jimmy would do a good job.

Edit: Nah, Apple wants their human and mathematical music curation techniques/subscription model/industry connections/Jimmy Iovine is just a bonus, and the hardware business is an unfortunately large chunk of the deal. I bet they sell it off. Ultimately the acquisition is a defensive move, same story with all major acquisitions, they realize that iTunes is behind pandora/spotify/grooveshark/etc. and they're buying their way in to remain competitive. It's similar to the way they acquired all those map and location related companies to bolster Apple maps. I wish they would buy sound cloud.

Edit: If one of the principal reasons for the buy is this human/computer curation technique that Jimmy is talking about, there is a big problem. When a new song is released by a not well know artist is can travel quickly amongst early adopters, but not among the general public. If their curation technique involves a human, there may be a lag in the time it takes for those new songs to be placed in rotation. Also, how will they ensure that the humans they hire to make lists have good taste?

True, but back then the iPod brand was thriving, and streaming services weren't a big deal.

If U2 Inc owned a music service and Apple bought them and made Bono an executive then the comparison would make sense.

The U2 iPod was nothing more than a marketing strategy. :p

Perish the thought.

Microsoft is starting to look better

I really don't see any of the racism in this thread that some are accusing others of posting.

If Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, or some other celebrity or musician had a company in which Apple were to pay billions of USD because of a supposed need to be hip or mainstream, I think the forum would have very similar responses to this current thread.

Steve Jobs had a sense of style and was confident about it. He talked about style and design while wearing New Balance shoes, Levi's jeans, and a black turtle neck.

Someone that shouldn't be in the music industry? Why?

Yeah god forbid a guy with 6 Grammy awards and great influence in music be in the music industry huh. I bet there's a lot of artists who are glad he is though. People hating on success huh?

All you whiners thinking Apple is loosing its touch are wrong. Do you actually believe that Apple will sell out its core values only because Iovine and Dre come aboard? There are no dilettantes at play here. This is ridiculous

Ill take this further. I dont think its right to ever call another human being "trash", just because they had different opportunities, suffered harship, didnt get as good an education, born in the wrong place, wrong time, or whatever the reason. It is an affront to basic human decency to label another as trash. Money does not come into it. There are plenty of rich people who do very bad things to others, and plenty of poor who would give their last penny to help someone out.

The prejudice and idiocy in this thread make me want to stop reading this forum.

I've been lurking long before I made an account and I have to say this is the worst I've ever seen on front page MR. The overt racism in some of these comments are absolutely baffling...

The main problem with this is this is a clear signal that Apple is failing to think outside the box and scrounging for someone who can. Apple used to have direction and a vision. I hate to say it but they need another Steve Jobs. Someone who can think into the future, someone who can create their own culture.

People need to put the price in perspective.

Apple can afford this acquisition regardless of your definition of its "success".

Facebook paid $19 billion for WhatsApp.

An app people, an APP.
That app and it's users are growing like wildfire. Beats has none of that growth. They should have gone after Spotify.

Sorry trendy rap and hip hop died in the last decade. It might come back but for now the tastes are pop and EDM.
I think a guy like Jack White would be a better fit for Apple.

I don't get headphones for outdoor use on audio equipment at all, when a pair of Philips SHE9550's can be had for $20 (better than Sony XBA3) and would obliterate virtually any headphones used in the noisy open street and on public transport due to the noise eliminating seal.

If you had 160 billion dollars, would you buy (for $3.2b) a company that makes over $1 billion dollars in revenue with a cheap product, has a unique app that hasn't gained traction, and executives that are respected in and can speak to the markets where you make a lot of your money already?

Because I would. And thats whats happening here, regardless of "culture".

Anybody who uses the word "ghetto" in this thread doesn't know what they're talking about. Kids buy Beats. From all walks of life.

Bringing "culturally aware" managers to Apple is a big part of why Apple is interested in acquiring Beats

Reportedly, it's not that Apple is worried about losing its 30% cut of song downloads, but Apple launching a streaming music service could decimate the more than $1 billion that iTunes generates for record industry revenues.
The piece argues that Apple may be looking to grow its streaming business on the side as iTunes music downloads drop, and that the company is looking to "bridge the download and cloud eras gracefully."

aware, culturally and business, i see. now check this.

this sums it all up:

I actually believe the culture reference here was to popular culture - i.e. what the kids are buying these days.

And Apple would be buying beats at the height of their popularity. Kids are fickle. Whose to say a year or two from now Beats will still be the "in" thing. Or if Apple acquires them that kids will still think they're cool.

this sums it all up:
Image

That image is misleading as it breaks down the portion the artist gets based on musical instrument on the traditional album sales chart but the independent chart shows the artist portion un-broken down so as to skew the perception to fit your narrative. Granted, the record industry is taking alot of money but you don't have to try to mislead the facts.

So are u saying hip hop is dead now? Really cuz it seems to be an even bigger part of the mainstream now.

What makes jack white a better fit than two of the most influential people in music history? I like jack white but afaik he doesn't have a billion dollar business venture to show that he can make money for apple.

"Lady Gaga herself spent months working with Beats by Dr. Dre and her style team to create the perfect look."

After all, looks are the most important factor with an audio product. Heh.

No, people just hating on a genuine thug and murderer. If apple is going for the gangster, thug, criminal, hoodlum "culture" then they've found it with these goons. Whatever though.

It's comical that apple pulls a popular app that deals with totally harmless cannabis but is fine with having some rapper Neanderthal lead their PR campaign. Yeah. OK.
