Report: These 10 New AI Features Are Coming in iOS 18

You're probably right

I'm agnostic on all of it and fully in favor of RCS if it makes it all "better" to deal with mixed blue and green bubble messages/conversation threads
I’m going to be annoyed if it is a required feature because iMessage has never been required so rcs shouldn’t either. But hopefully it’ll still differentiate between the colors for messaging as I like knowing who has an iPhone.

I have no issues with SMS nor any benefit of rcs.

Nobody implied in any way that YOU, have any issues with SMS.
I don't think you personally have to see any benefits from RCS, they objectively exist nonetheless.
Most iphone users don't use iMessage anyway, maybe this move to RCS will beneficial to iMessage as well and will increase it's usage world wide.

I share that lament, and it scales up to a more dystopian future, I'm afraid. Anyone interested in a career in the creative industries would be well-advised to stay clear of AI and develop their latent abilities. With AI, those abilities simply remain latent / dormant. We're ushering in future generations who won't be able to compose music, write compelling fiction, sketch/draw, compose poetry etc. Apple got it correct in their latest advert – crushing the human experience – except, it isn't just Apple. All of big tech is complicit.

Excellent point. Apple’s core DNA is the effort to FACILITATE creativity. But these AI systems generally have the opposite effect. They exploit the creativity of others and in the process suppress the kind of creative endeavor that the AI itself exploits. Generative AI short circuits creativity instead of enhancing it. Apple should know this but somehow they don’t. Same goes for Adobe. They’re all in on AI “creative” tools that are not creative at all. They’re shortcuts that lead to homogenized, unoriginal content. Both companies are going to experience a rude awakening soon.

A perfect technology for Google (and Meta!)

Steal from others to profit for yourself

It's in their DNA

Nothing on this list is new, with the possible exception of auto-generated emojis (for god's sakes....)

This is just marketing...as if anything new on the market is irrelevant if it doesn't have the letters 'AI' slapped all over it.

In a year or so's time set to become another meaningless term consigned to the dustbin. And then plucked out and recycled again in a decade or so.

Actually Pixels have had the emoji stuff for over 2 years now and everything else since the dawn of smartphones.

Nothing about spell checking and auto correction which is still God awful on iOS. They still haven’t fixed it. Not sure I care about many of these AI features to be honest.

This.

I absolutely HATE everything about iOS keyboards and spellcheckers and auto correct. Unacceptable for this prices they ask.

Haha no. Only in the US they still use SMS or care about the colour of message bubbles. The rest of the world has moved on to cross platform solutions long ago.

It's still funny to see people discussing the merits of primitive or platform locked (and also primitive, let me know when replies to iMessages are as readable as on WhatsApp) messaging solutions.

Exactly this. They supposedly fixed in iOS 17 but it didn’t change a single thing. Very disappointing they can’t even fix something simple this. I’m so fed up I would even consider switching to Android at this point.

You can say all you want about Google but at least their Autocorrect and Complete are… amazing.

The text messaging ship has long sailed for me. It's an inherently insecure and inconvenient way of communication providing no perfect forward secrecy (rather, no secrecy at all) and can't be used across devices. I can't write a text messages from my Mac and if my iPhone isn't nearby I won't receive any messages either.

And it uses the phone number for identification whereas my entire network of people is structured solely based on app contacts. Most people use Signal, Discord or some other service, whatever phone number might be connected to it doesn't matter. I have the phone number set to forward any and all calls straight to voicemail, it's 100% robocalls. Even my doctors appointments are now done digitally so I literally haven't placed a regular phone call since probably 2023.

I don't have a single sent text message on my iPhone since I got this one. The only text messages on my iPhone are automated 2FA verification codes and storm warning text messages from my insurance lol.

Only in the US they still use SMS or care about the colour of message bubbles.
Well neither I nor anyone in my friend circle uses SMS, half the people have iPhones/iMessage and the other half has a combination of Signal and Discord.

The only reason I have a phone number is that I can't get a cell contract without one. All I need is the data connection to connect Teams for my work and Signal etc. for private chats.

Does anyone even remember a phone number anymore? I don't even know my own current number. Had some funny interactions where I was asked to give out a phone number just because their system needed one and ended up giving the only number I can remember, my childhood home's now long defunct landline.

I am fine with sms. Rcs could and should stay with lagdroid as far as I’m concerned.

I’m going to be annoyed if I can’t turn it off but seeing as we can turn off iMessage idk why we wouldn’t be able to turn off rcs.

Because i have no use for it nor do I need it to talk to android users. SMS works just fine and I have iMessage.
If you never text message Android users then doesn’t really matter if you turn it off either then. You wouldn’t notice any difference.

"More natural interactions with Siri." was in the list.
I just hope that the answer won't always be like this (that would be more interactive than today, but certainly not what you'd expect):

  • Unfortunately, I don't know.
  • I can't say much about that.
  • Please search for the answer yourself on google.
  • I'm out of my depth.
  • I'm too tired to answer you.
  • But you are asking complicated questions.
  • I didn't understand you properly, could you formulate your question more simply.

Outlook already has these. For a lot of business mails, the replies are OK-ish.

Of course. Because a lot of business emails should never have been sent in the first place, and deserve nothing better than a LLM-generated reply. Don't forget to use the new cover sheets on your TPS reports.

Instead of foisting yet more spyware upon us, Apple should design & release something far better than iOS or iPasOS in particular. ‘Post-PC world’, seriously?

Apple, please... Make improvements to shortcut generation. Do some fun stuff with photos. The end.

Stay away from any iOS changes that harkens us back to Clippy asking me if I'm starting to write a letter.
