I’m not saying it’s a bad product. It’s just that kindle and audible or so dominant it feels pointless and kept there presumably as it was a jobs passion project and perhaps tidy don’t want to kill it out of respect.

Apple gave up on books when they lost the antitrust case.

They were not willing to compete with Amazon on price

I say the biggest problem with these services is that people haven't heard of them or confused by them. Apple is constantly pushing its hardware, but not their services.

tv+ is one of the best in terms of quality over quantity, but hardly anyone has heard of it, or confused that it is only for Apple devices or if you have an tv. It even has an Academy Award Best Picture winner, yet don't promote that at all. Word of mouth isn't working, because there are barely any people talking about it.

 Music should be bigger, and people have heard of it. Problem is, Apple don't tell people the features of  Music that makes it different from others to entice them to switch.

 Arcade can make inroads with families and casual gamers, but again, no advertising.

 Books- completely forgotten.

iTunes Movies/TV/Music- completely forgotten.

Notice how pivotal iCloud+ is?

See why they screw everyone on base storage and component upgrade pricing?

Notice how they never bump the included iCloud storage (or add to it per new device purchased) so you have to pay for iCloud+?

Is it more clear now why they offer no paid iCloud storage options between 200GB & 2 TB!?

The iCloud+ "business" is largely a racket

People are getting screwed, by design
Cool avatar bro.

The main reason to get out of this business is that they aren't "investing" with huge $ losses in something that will bear fruit "eventually."

They aren't building up a catalog of anything anyone wants to watch again, especially with the heavy focus on serialized content.

They are just flat out TORCHING money

If they want to stay in this, they need to make it pencil out as a good business -- right now.

It's hilarious to me to see all the products we "can't have" (like an iPhone Mini or better iPad Mini) because they wouldn't "make enough" money, despite being profitable .... while Tim is just taking a flamethrower to a bank account for Apple TV+ over in the other corner.
I’m surprised at this because Tim Cook is meant to run Apple with discipline and then some.

But obviously not. Obviously he’s ok with spending huge amounts of money each year on services for no discernible reason.

Maybe he was just desperate to attend the Oscars and the emmys ?

Such as?

The Apps mostly suck, which is the main turnoff I've noticed among friends who've tried it (usually several times on free trials) and never been interested.

Think about what you've typed here and see if you can spot the issue..

"Word of mouth isn't working"

That speaks volumes

Apple should’ve gotten rid of Eddie Cue years ago. What da hell has he done that turned into anything of value?
In all seriousness it does feel like many of the jobs era execs should think about taking a back seat now, as it’s starting to feel like a different era to the jobs one (meaning - AI)

I don't think Apple+ will ever be profitable if they continue contents like now.

Both Silo and Severance are being claimed as blockbusters, but they are the most depressing stuffs I've ever seen.

- Silo features a big group of people living in confined and controlled space where people with authority hides truth in order to oppress the rest.

- Severance features a story about how a corporation uses mind-control-like medical practice to maintain their employees day to day runs. Employees are not allowed to communicate to the outside world, not allowed to resign from their job.

We are well into the 21st century, but promoting the type of enslaving ideology that only existed in early 19th century. If these were documentaries talking about our past history, sure I'd love to watch every episode to learn about how we got here today. But that's not the case. I don't know about how these 2 shows are getting attention, but each of them I watched few episodes and abandoned them without looking back.

Well said

Even "For All Mankind" couldn't help but devolve into shooting/conflict themes

It's lazy and lacking in creativity and imagination to devolve into the same old tired and depressing themes.

Over the past few years my favourite TV series are on Apple TV.
However, every time I try and promote this to people, no one is interested when they hear Apple TV. I've tried.

There's a few movies I like but none are re-watchable. IMO, a lot of money has been wasted on the movie side of Apple TV.

Favourite list below -
Severance - great although 2nd series was too slow
Silo - again too slow
Slow Horses - one of the best
Ted Lasso
Dark Matter - first half excellent then faded into rubbish
Foundation - excellent
For All Mankind - excellent
Presumed Innocent - excellent
See - good at the time
Sugar - excellent
Defending Jacob - excellent
Tehran - another favourite
Wecrashed - good
Liaison - fantastic
What about Coda - Which was wonderful

Here would be a good start, other than a 1-pager: https://www.apple.com/uk/apple-music/

Whilst there are many improvements I feel can be made to  Music, I don't think it's unusable compared to others

Can you please elaborate on what features you think are the compelling ones?

What I see on that page is this:

Play over 100 million songs, always ad‑free. Hear next-level sound quality with Spatial Audio1 and lossless audio.2 Take centre stage with Apple Music Sing. Access exclusive interviews and live concerts. And listen across all your devices, online or off. The music app for music lovers is here.

Spatial Audio = "most people don't care" or simply don't even like it

Lossless Audio = Available on other platforms, but also something that a lot of the mainstream doesn't care about either, depending upon their listening context and devices, etc

Apple Music Sing, Interviews and Live Concerts -- It's all just super niche neat side stuff that isn't going to drive interest on its own for most people.

This is a nothingburger, Apple can absolutely afford to loss 1 billion dollars a year and still be EXTREMELY profitable. This is not news, this is noise...

Can they also make an iPhone Mini too?

Those actually make money, while keeping interested buyers in the ecosystem for other Services

How on Earth are we defending Apple having a huge money loser category, from a company run by Tim "Margins" Cook?

The main thing that drew me to Apple Music was a niche feature - being able to upload bootlegs and concerts from my iTunes library to the cloud for streaming access. I know that not many people have a need for that.

The content is too slick for my tastes. Most everything reminds me of an Apple commercial.

But Apple is valuable also because of how efficient it is perceived to be and this is a worrying lapse (see also : the car).

I will always maintain that Apple made a big mistake not buying a studio like Amazon did with MGM. They probably could have bought Sony Studios a few years ago and have an instant catalog of content people want to watch as well as IPs that they could exploit. A solid library of content with familiar content goes a long way with viewers when choosing a streaming service. Perhaps they’ll consider buying Warner Brothers if it goes on sale later this year as has been rumored.

Moet Apple Services do not gain a lot of interest and revenue because they have unintuitive and boring apps. Who cares about Books? News? Arcade? Even Music is quite boring.

The only service on par with the competition is ATV+ but that suffers from a horrible naming scheme and confusion between hardware, software and content.

Apple needs to make its services s*xy again.

This is exactly it; Apple's TV shows are fantastic but they're wasting money on big budget films. I guess someone thinks that having a big film that's in cinemas is a good way to advertise their services but I'd argue that having a good show that goes viral does that a hell of a lot better and at a tenth of the cost. They should be focussing on more great shows and keep some aside for indie type films - like Coda.

Also, I like how you qualify each show in your list apart from Ted Lasso because... it's just Ted Lasso. :p

It’s incredible how important iTunes music was in the 00s and how they frittered it away.

I guess though it was because itms was inportsnt to the iPod. And then the iPhone became the everything device with music just one thing that it did.

Having said that, I’m surprised at how much it has stultified.

I’d say that if you like mainstream genres and you love radio - well it’s a great product.

But it’s a product that feels pretty uncool, with Spotify being far more ‘on trend’.

Oh the ux is awful too.

Agreed, lots of good stuff, even though I probably won't watch any of the sci-fi stuff beyond Severance. And I've not watched a single movie. But you neglect to mention other good shows and mini series, especially Bad Monkey! I'm a huge Carl Hiaasen fan -- not to mention Vincent Vaughn -- but my wife was only familiar with CH's YA stuff. Well, she quickly became addicted, and we binged Bad Monkey. So please add

Bad Monkey
Loot
Disclaimer
Morning Show
Bad Sisters
Mythic Quest
Yes Bad Monkey! Added to list.

Price rises incoming then… I hope they don’t ditch it as I enjoyed films like The Gorge. And I know my brother in law enjoys some of their shows too and I have watched a few also.

I completely agree with you. It seems like this is a legacy product at Apple is slowly allowing to die. They really could make the premium user experience if they did a better job of curating. For example, if there were a way to search books or audiobooks that were only published by major companies or only had reviews and something like New York review books then people like me would probably be more tempted to buy titles. But there’s just so much junk everywhere. And I can’t believe now they have AI readings of audiobooks.
