They won't leave the package (Apple requires signature). So there is that.

I have previously called when I had trcking info (on certain things, never an iPhone). As long as it's not yet out for delivery, they have always been able to work with me. I order a lot of saltwater corals, fish, etc. so I want them sitting in their overnight back as litle as possible. I always call in to where I know the package will be dispatched (last stop before delivery) and make sure they hold it for me. My local location is open by 8:30 am.

One caveat is that it needs to be a distribution location. It can not just be a "UPS Store".

It can indeed be picked up at UPS store, and is probably the best option for the OP:

http://www.ups.com/mychoice/features/

Hold for Will Call - Request packages to be held for pickup at a UPS facility.

Deliver to a UPS Retail Location - Request your packages be delivered to The UPS Store near you for pickup. ($5 per use for members, unlimited for Premium)

This is the assumption that it ships with UPS, although Fedex has a similar service:
http://www.fedex.com/us/delivery/

Customize Delivery Time
Deliver to Another Address
Hold at FedEx Location
Sign for a Package
Provide Delivery Instructions
Request Vacation Hold

Premium UPS account will come in handy on delivery day.

There was a thread on the slickdeals forum in which they were offering free premium accounts. (That is how I got two years of FREE Premium UPS account)

It wouldn't hurt to dig up that thread, the deal might still be working.

That "deal" turns on automatic renewal, at which point you pay $40/year. For 1 iPhone delivery every couple of years, it's worth it to just have a free account and get completely free will-call. Or, pay $5 one time for the UPS Store hold.

You can turn off the automatic renewal.

I turned it off manually, I specifically remember doing it.

Did this last year in the UK with the iPhone 4 launch. Was a nightmare because the contract activation servers were down so the lines barely moved for hours. Yet when I went in there for my SIM-Free version I was in and out within minutes. I can't believe they didn't have the initiative to separate lines into contract and SIM-Free.

I have to make a shipping gamble here, I can either reserve for pick up the day after launch at a location I will be in on that day or have it shipped the day before I leave to go to said location.

Aka it comes out the day before I move to Uni.

Do I risk the shipping or risk the terrible reservation organisation

I pay full price in order to keep my unlimited data plan, and have yet to find a way to order online without forcing an upgrade (and thus, losing my unlimited data plan).

If anyone figures out a way to do that, let me know. I always get in line late Thursday/early Friday.

Do you have AT&T? I have had every iPhone since the original, and still have unlimited data. I've always ordered online from the Apple store and never once been forced to change my plan.

I did this for the 4 at an Apple Store; I reserved it for in-store pickup, and went to pick it up early in the morning to make sure I got it. Huge mistake. I was put at the end of the line so the others in front of us who didn't reserve could get theirs. It took seven hours to get my iPhone 4, when I probably could've just waited until the end of the day.

That's pretty crap service. They should've been moving through people that paid for it already faster. All you need to do is show an ID get handed a phone. Not such a big deal.

Do we know if being a premium user will allow us to sign for a package early from Apple or does Apple restrict this?

anyone knows how long they will keep your reserved/pre-ordered iphone in the Apple Stores before you pick it up?

I was one who reserved an iPhone 4 through apple and when I got to the store the line was wrapped around the back. There was a shorter line of about 5 people for preorders. The other people in line were so mad!

I will pre order and wait for it on the 19 at my office. I already told my ups guy who is been doing my route for years to be on the look out and drop it off early for me. He said cool I got u.

Wow, is this new? I have never been told about this option...

That's odd, when i went on the Apple page it didn't show that, it was showing this

http://www.apple.com/uk/?cid=oas-emeia-domains-apple.co.uk

You have to go the the Apple retail pages. That's where it mentions in store pick up. There doesn't seem to be any mention of it on the home page or anywhere else for some reason.

----------

Does anybody know how the pre-order has worked in the past for reserving in store vs having it shipped to your house? Is it different pages you check out from or is it just a different shipping option you choose?

Any more details about in store pickup?

I think AT&T is the worst place anyone can expect a pickup in day one, I've preordered from them many times and it never is first come first served basis, their system is ****ed up and your phone might come a week after.

Planning on using AT&T Next.

hi

my first preorder. wishing everyone good luck tomorrow

I remember I had (have) an ATT FAN discount, and tried to buy my iPhone 4 or 4s at the Apple store and couldn't (after driving 60 miles). Apple couldn't sell me the phone because of the discount, and at the time ATT didn't have the phone in stock. Had to wait for another ATT shipment and buy direct from them.

I'm sure things have changed, but that bummed me out. So close, yet so far.

Just heads up: I spoke to an ATT rep at my local store and he said shipping would be 7-10 days after release. I'm going to another store a bit further away from me to confirm, but I suggest you guys call around.

I'm an existing account upgrading through ATT next btw

they haven't changed, for FAN accounts it's still a mess...

Nope still the same. FAN discounts have to be dealt in-store.
