Once I got to the store they would NOT let me switch my order to device only. I had to either cancel my order entirely or proceed with the plan I selected online.

Are you serious. Wow.

Why won't apple let us buy a phone that doesn't extend contract ??

Replaced 32GB Space Gray with 64GB Gold(AT&T) at Stonebriar Mall, Frisco TX. I was checking since last night and it was showing unavailable for pickup. One of my friend dropped in around lunch time and he got 64 GB Gold. He called me and I rushed to the store. Luckily, they had another 64GB Gold in stock (They had 16GB as well). Replaced my phone paid the difference.
How was the replacement process. My wife has silver but it's defective (power button doesn't work) but instead of replacing she's just waiting for Gpld to show up. So I'm constantly checking the site for Gold and I guess I'll have to pay full price then do a return and subsidy price swap but I'm curious how much of a hassle this will be.

I was fairly perplexed. His reasons made no sense and I was able to make him sound like an idiot but that didn't translate into me walking out with a phone. My order is still in tact though bc I didn't cancel it. I'll try to talk to Apple using the online chat function and express my displeasure.

I've been very busy at work today, but I was able to snag a 16 gb AT&T Gold 5s. Now, I need to find time to drive to the Apple Store.:apple:

Anybody know if I can change the method of payment at the Apple store once I go and pick up the phone?

Need help, so I currently qualify for the $449 price but would rather pay $649 instead of extending my AT&T contract for another 2 yrs. The account is under my mom's name (but I'm authorized), so it's probably not a good idea to open a new line and request to pay it in full price instead. My sister just recently got an iPhone 5 back in July so her price shows as $649 (without extending her contract, but probably won't be unlocked.) Problem is if I use her line, when they scan the phone her line will go into the SIM card that's in the 5s. I barely see her, so that might be a problem. Should I just upgrade it with my line and request to pay the additional $250 as a device only or will the retail stores won't allow it?

Apple retail stores will not let you pay full price if you are eligible for any kind of upgrade. Period. It's very very stupid.

I'm kinda shocked you didn't ask to speak to a manager tho ?

Been meaning to post since this afternoon, but it looks like people had some success. I noticed yesterday that a lot of inventory was updated around 2:15 PM EDT, and lo and behold, same thing happened today.

I managed to score my target 5s (32gb Silver Verizon) soon after inventory was updated. Just picked it up! A very nice upgrade from my trusty 4.

I was able to score a 32gb gold (AT&T) today in the Bay Area (Calif). Just checked online and it says "ready for pick up."

It's currently 1:31 PM here in Hawaii and inventory has been the same since In-Store Pick-up has started. Hoping it'll change throughout today.

What did the Apple empoylee say? Did you speak to a manger?

You're right, I probably should have. But I figured I wouldn't get anywhere because after arguing for a few minutes, the specialist went to speak to the manager himself and gave me the same shpiel. I wasn't going to get anywhere.

They're still holding my phone. I'm going to call Apple and see if they'll change it for me to device only over the phone.

Just a heads up for those in Central California (Sacramento/Stockton area) looking for a AT&T Gold 64GB model, seems like the Apple Store in Modesto has some ready for pick up today.

What did the Apple empoylee say?

A few things:

They cannot change orders at the store. They are unmodifiable. I said, OK, well what if I cancel it. Then you don't have to change it, then I'll just buy it outright here. He said, nope, if I cancel it, it goes back into the online inventory, I won't be able to sell it to you.

I next said, "so you're telling me that there is no current way to buy a full price device only phone"? He replied that device only is for walk in purchasers only. I said (A) the store manager on 14th street said you guys aren't doing walk ins; and (B), then how is the "cancel-then-purchase" scenario I outlined before not considered a walk in?

I wasn't getting anywhere, and he had already been back to see if he could make an exception for me, so I just left. He did tell me that they'll be holding the phone for me until 10/6.

So let's say you have a color you don't want. Can you reserve a phone through the website and exchange your phone for that one when you get to the store? Sorry I'm at work and could only scan the past 2 pages to see if this has been covered.

Very same thing happened to me last Monday. I spoke with an employee AND the manager and they both told me the same stupid thing.

To simply to everyone, YMMV on this. I've read plenty users here who had no problem getting to the store and changing to device only, while there are those like us who are SOL with these employees who will not budge. The most ridiculous thing I was also told by another employee from a different store was that even if you bought device only, they will require you to open the phone and activate it in the store. That of course makes zero sense

Its showing "available today" at Arden fair, Walnut Creek, and Modesto. Verizon 16gb space gray

I am completely clueless as to why I do not see that. Im using a PC from Sac State library and my iPhone 5 apple store app and both say Unavailable

This is simply not true.

You CAN absolutely buy an iPhone 5S for full price at an Apple retail store if you are eligible for an upgrade. You just have to do it between 8 and 10 AM, when the store is still technically closed.

They allow this for early walk-ins.
