Very same thing happened to me last Monday. I spoke with an employee AND the manager and they both told me the same stupid thing.

To simply to everyone, YMMV on this. I've read plenty users here who had no problem getting to the store and changing to device only, while there are those like us who are SOL with these employees who will not budge. The most ridiculous thing I was also told by another employee from a different store was that even if you bought device only, they will require you to open the phone and activate it in the store. That of course makes zero sense

Just reserved an AT&T 16gb gold by creating an att account @ soho. I was planning to exchange my SG ( Tmo GSM version) with the one I reserved. After reading your post, i feel like I won't able to exchange it tomorrow

This is simply not true.

You CAN absolutely buy an iPhone 5S for full price at an Apple retail store if you are eligible for an upgrade. You just have to do it between 8 and 10 PM, when the store is still technically closed.

They allow this for early walk-ins.

My 2 nearest Apple stores will not allow this. Guess every store is different then.

Who knows, it seems like different stores have different policies. This happened to me at 59th street, so I'd avoid that store.

Few space gray 16 in San Diego area if anyone wants.

So after searching for two days, there really isn't any pattern for stock update it seems. It's just at random times for random models

Wish you luck. Just seems that each Apple store or at least each employee is different.

I was more furious because that same evening, the in-store pick up was disabled. I find it hard to believe that the store held those two phones I reserved all week since they claimed its "online inventory" and cannot be sold to walk-ins.

For what it's worth, I called Apple customer service and asked them to change it to device only from their end so I could collect my phone. They refused. Initial rep and manager both said the same thing.

This is correct. I talked to an employee when picking up my phone today (for what that is worth). She said normally, they would get shipments of 15-20 of each color/carrier/storage size for iphone releases.

This time around, she said the shipments are usually only 1-2 "types" of 5s (a shipment of only 64gb verizon silver came in yesterday, whereas today they received silver 32gb and black 16gb for verizon and one other carrier).

It is totally random. If what you want isn't in stock, odds are it will be the next day though.

Well my friend, I guess we go the best buy route and hope they price match Apple huh?

Once im done with school for the day, ill call Apple and get to the bottom of this. What if we were buying the phone as a gift for someone, wanted to pay full price??

LOL. I went there with the rep at the store. "It's a birthday gift for my fiancé and she doesn't have an upgrade." NO DICE.

Does anyone know if they update stock at night?

Supposedly some stores do, but I haven't noticed too much of this around me. However, a lot of the stores in my region (Georgia/TN to Raleigh up to Cincy) appear to update right around 2:15 PM eastern.

Absolutely crazy. No other explanation

Just that they aren't selling them "device only". At this point I'm considering signing up for ATT service and immediately canceling, out of spite. My math tells me it'll be reasonably close in cost to buying a full price phone.

Does anyone have a link to a reputable unlocking service for ATT phones?

Maybe they are trying to reduce the reselling some scalpers do?

I think that's probably true. I just want one for myself. They're weeding out legitimate customers. Not that there won't be 1000000 people they can sell the phone to besides me but I wish they could find a better way to weed out scalpers.

After so many failed attempts, frustrations, retries, and a lot of phone call, I finally got the text message of the phone is ready for pick up literally 5 minutes ago! Hooray, so excited! Can't wait to get my hands on my new phone.

Why can't you just walk out with the phone and cancel? Will it cost more than paying full price?

Same here. Just sign up and then cancel after a few days
