Just did some coop on the RE5 demo this weekend. Anyone playing this game should look at Left 4 Dead. The differences between the two games are ASTOUNDING. Unfortunately this game is an abomination as compared to L4D.

stainlessliquid,

RE4's controls still had to remain somewhat true to its predecessors, that's why they limited the movement, not because of the controller.

The C-stick on the Cube is really no worse than any analog-stick, as it is one. When it comes to aiming, I hate them ALL!

I'll make my own assumption. If the core guys that worked on the previous RE titles had worked on RE5, they would have balanced the controls to match the gameplay.

I know there is no technical reason to freeze you in position when aiming a weapon. Are they keeping it this way because they think the game's fan base wants it that way? Or maybe tradition? (just being retorical)

When I look at who worked on RE5 and see that games like Lost Planet are on their list, I wonder why they didn't at least implement those controls. I guess they were afraid to break what worked well in RE4, but wanted to bump up the action! They should have called it Resident extreme Evil...

Anyways, I won't be playing this until September and I'm hoping that if the PC controls aren't much improved over the console version, someone will release a mod. But, I'm assuming that like Dead Space and other console derived games, I'll just need to set my mouse's speed to max when aiming, to compensate for slower free-look that was intentional on the developer's part.

When I first saw the screen shots in PCGamer I was really looking forward to this game. But at this point in time the control scheme gets in the way of immersion, severely hampering playability, unless possibly the player is into some kind of RE retro mindset. :) I never played the earlier versions.

I assume you've played L4D. How do you think the two compare? L4D is fluid, dynamic, one of the best coop survival games to come along ever imho.

I really don't care for RE4's controls, but that game was optimized for them, so it bothers me that RE5's team really didn't get it with their game.

I like both type of games. L4D purely for a great co-op FPS, RE4 and Dead Space for their single player focus. I like variety. I don't plan on playing RE5 co-op, as none of my friends are interested in that game, it's also not why I want to play it, and I wish the producer/director had been shot before they could execute it. Well, I wish the real RE team could have worked on it, instead of the Capcom left overs.

Playing L4D with my 3 friends was quite a bit of fun, but after we beat every level to death and play time kind of died off. I like that game still, but one of my friends is a curmudgeon when it comes to it -- I had to buy him a copy to get him to play, so we rarely play these days. Anyways, because of that, we haven't played it in a while. It also doesn't help that DOTA is still our favorite online/co-op game and gets the majority of our time, at least until BattleNet released an update that killed all JAS enabled mods last week. :(

I think RE5 plays pretty much exactly like RE4, gameplay-wise. It's just less spooky, and the characters/voice-acting have taken a step backwards into the realm of over-the-top and ridiculous. Entertaining though.

That said, I think for me this is the last installment of the series that can get away with these stuck-to-the-ground-while-aiming controls. If they don't overhaul and "fix" them for part 6, I will pass.

Consider I've only played the RE5 demo, it seems like the two games (RE5-L4D) really feel the same in what is expected of you- survival, with run'n gun action, except u can't in RE5. Maybe RE5 has RPG elements? But if it does that seems secondary to the main focus, shooting zombies before they get ya!! :) On that level, sticking to the floor is a real annoyance.
