I'm hoping for an iOS update tomorrow and new apps to follow. If Apple is indeed releasing a new update, it's very likely that devs are waiting for the new update before they release anything. If an update comes out and no apps immediately follow, I'm going to start doing some research and start emailing some devs to find out what the issue is. I don't see any reason why a simple game like Doodle Jump hasn't been updated for the display.

No, that has absolutely nothing to do with updates or any of that sort. The developers aren't waiting for any new updates, the SDK has only been out for a week (months for those devs using the sdk betas). They need time to actually code their application to support the higher resolution and some developers won't do this until they get their iPhone 4 in hand.

A simple game like Doodle Jump? Are you joking? If any of the graphics were drawn for the specific resolution of iPhone, it has to be redrawn again for the new higher resolution and it has to be fully tested to make sure it works. It's not simple at all.

I've waited since the iOS 4 keynote for the new phone. It's kind of weird that my artwork on the iPod looks amazingly clear when those are only 600x600. The app icons are 500x500 and they look pixelated to hell. I'm confused.

Actually, no, the icons displayed are 57 x 57.

I'm a big reader, and it's the best thing that's happened to a non e-Ink screen. I've stuck my Sony Reader in a drawer now, preferring the screen of the new iPhone. I found that a lot of the main apps I use have already been updated (but not many of the games, which is understandable - more graphics to resize).

Stanza, Flight Control, Crosswords, Instapaper, Twitter, Facebook, NYT crosswords, etc have all been updated.

It'll be nice to see more games start getting updated, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's at least a month out.

The icons look decent on my 3GS but on my iP4, they look significantly worse. It's like playing a Wii game on an HDTV... it brings out the flaws and makes it look worse than on a normal display.

The icons are scaled to fit the same share of the screen. A 600x600 icon on 1200x1200 resolution looks fine (50% share) but will look "pixelated" when upscaled to fit the same share of much higher resolution like (2400x2400), it has to actually fill in 50% of the screen with only 25% (600x600) pixel details.

After being sold on the screen hype, seeing it in the store did not grab me as different. Maybe if Apple had one old phone on display to do comparisons to, I might have been able to see the difference.

If the angle-of-view has improved... hooray for that. That helps when more than one person is trying to see the image... so, you can't have too much of that!

Now, if someone could design a screen that works better in sunlight...

I got a brand new Ferrari yesterday but I am going to return it unless they start banking roads so I can go faster.

Here.

Real Racing has been updated to iPhone 4. Look at the other icons.

Not all icons are updated. But if you use folders you'll like retina. And like I say the readability of text is out of control.

you do know that the icons should look the same on 3GS.
The screen size is exactly the same and all that happening on blowing up the res is there are 4 pixel for each on on the 3GS.
those 4 pix take up the same amount of room as 1 on the 3GS and it should look the same on both.

That being said the 3GS screen is pretty crappy compared to other phones that were out at the same time.

So the iPhone 4 screen isn't good enough for you? How is the inferior 3GS screen going to help?

Yes! For me, the display is fantastic, especially for reading ebooks. Compared to my Kindle 2, indoors, the display is close to e-ink quality; outdoors, it's not comparable to the kindle. So, both my Iphone 4 and Kindle 2 are maintays.

As for games and other aps, in time, it will greatly enhance their desirability and usefulness.
