At the moment retina display is very very overrated. No developer is taking the advantage of the new display, all these blurry icons are really pissing me off. If there aren't more apps updated in about 30 days I'm seriously considering returning my iPhone 4 and getting a 3GS. I don't know if it's worth it to keep the new phone even though it has more ram. That's about the only positive so far.

You're disappointed with the screen, so your solution is to return the phone and buy a phone with a much worse screen. Fascinating

The retina display is not overrated. Whining like a child in this forum IS overrated (but highly popular at the moment, it seems).

This screen is amazing the OP is trippin' or needs glasses.

How is it overrated? Maybe you should look up what overated means. It's amazing.

Give it some time and new apps will take advantage of the resolution.

Keep it. Yes, precious few games are using it so far, but just about every word of text is crisp and clear regardless of whether the developer has updated their app. If you read stuff, you want iPhone4. Four days later it's still blowing my mind.
Exactly. I'm loving being able to read stuff on my phone without zooming in or squinting.

It's not the retina display that's over rated... the retina display is the best display on a mobile phone right now.

The problem is app developers and honestly I think something fishy is going on. It has now been 3 days since a single app that I own (and I own a lot) has been updated for the display. You're right, the apps and icons are ugly and I haven't played a single game since launch.

3 Days! What a bunch of slackers.

As a developer myself, I need to point out that there are now 3 IOS platforms out there, Classic iPhone, iPad, and the new iPhone. If you want to make an app that truly takes advantage of each devices unique features, You have to test everything on 3 different devices. and you have to make 3 different size images for each graphic (if you want to make it look as good as possible). So to do this right takes time and money.

I for one will no longer offer apps for 99 cents. 1.99 or 2.99 will be the new minimum for me.

I hope as developers take the time to incorporate the cool new features available in the new iPhone, users understand that prices for apps will have to increase slightly as it's not as simple as it used to be to test and properly design apps since there are now 3 different screen sizes with 3 very different feature sets (gyrocope, retina display, etc).

Dude...

it's been 4 days and I'm still blown away by the text. Even apps like twitter, the text looks soooo clean. I don't know why, but I love it even more in the SUNLIGHT.

What applications have you developed? I'm always interested in helping out developers I see around MacRumors.

I disagree. The retina display is very accurately rated and I wish more developers would improve their Apps.

I can speak for three major developers that are working vigorously to ready Retina/iOS4 versions right now. I'm beta testing.

I've waited since the iOS 4 keynote for the new phone. It's kind of weird that my artwork on the iPod looks amazingly clear when those are only 600x600. The app icons are 500x500 and they look pixelated to hell. I'm confused.

You are soooo brutal. Have you seen the app icons on ANY OTHER PHONE? They are TERRIBLE compared to the iPhone. I don't know if you've noticed or not, but if you look at the stock app icons that come with the iPhone 4, they're CRYSTAL CLEAR. Why don't you whiners wait more than 4 or 5 days before you cry about everything under the sun. Its truly sad how things have changed around here. I've never seen so many people criticize such an amazing product in my whole life. Never. I honestly wish all the people who are b****ing would just take their iphone's back so people more deserving of them can have them. And as far as the reception issue is concerned, do people honestly think apple isn't going to address thing SOMEHOW? GTFO.

Stop doing that childish ****.

I think you have me confused with the "pics or it didn't happen" folks. My screen looks the same and it's a good example of Steve's point in the Keynote speech when he told the developers they should create high resolution graphics to take advantage of the new display.

I have to agree with the OP.

I played with an iPhone 4 for a bit at the Apple Store yesterday, and the apps that haven't been upgraded to take advantage of Retina display look awful. It reminds me of how the iPad can run iPhone Apps in pixel-doubled mode, but they look so awful that I got rid of almost all the iPhone Apps on my iPad.

I'm sure that in the coming months developers will start putting out apps that are more optimized for the retina display, and maybe I'll wait until then to get the iPhone 4. It would lessen the experience to have a phone where you're constantly looking at a mix of sharp apps and pixelated apps.

such a dumb post. patience is a virtue. and come on are the apps really that blurry? to think of going back to the 3gs after you already have the 4 is just pure stupidity if you ask me

I'm just appalled that these developers haven't all updated their apps and icons in the whopping three days since the iPhone 4's release. Hell, they may have even had the gall to take the weekend off and relax, those fiends.

I don't blame the OP. It makes perfect sense to take his new phone with the vastly improved display back to exchange it for an older model, so that when the icons and apps are finally updated, he still won't be able to see the difference. Perfectly logical.

Yes, the camera and the build quality is amazing. But the fact that these apps are so ****ing pixelated makes it hard very hard to use the other apps.

Quite honestly, I am having a hard time understanding your logic. Does the look of an application icon matter all that much?

Even if it did, that would have nothing to do with how the retina display is rated.
