Here is the requested proof of the image retention on the late 2013 rMBP:

http://youtu.be/qCPYJnsWbuo

I just uploaded it now, so give it a few minutes to let it process. But the video should show that IR does exist.

Now to put it into context, within the time it took me to figure out how to upload the above video (2-3 minutes?), the checkerboard has dispersed from my screen. Whether if this spells long term issues or not, I leave it up for you to decide.

Thank you for taking the time to make the video. I'm pissed right off now. Lol.

Some say it's been fixed. Some say all 13" panels have or will have severe IR, etc., etc. There's a lot of stuff out there being tossed around as fact but it's all just speculation. If the apple support threads are anything to go by, there have been far fewer complaints about the second revision panels so far. Will it remain that way? No one knows. Anyone who claims to is talking out of their ass.

Agreed.

As with anything (cars, monitors, cameras, cereal, etc.), every succeeding generation release/refresh will invariably have its quirks. What it comes down to in the end is: can you live with the problem if it does reveal itself? If not, then it is best to stay away and look towards some other alternative. On the flip side, if you can deal with the consequences, then know what you are getting yourself into.

I originally created this thread out of shock upon discovering this issue, as I was previously oblivious to this, and wanted to gauge just how serious this defect may be. Now having been informed, I'm not thrilled, but I'm at least prepared to handle the situation in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to make the video. I'm pissed right off now. Lol.

Sorry.

Look at the bright side, you have one less choice to agonize over before making your official purchase. ;)

Thank you very much.
So for the 15" A022 is Samsung and A019 is LG.

My 2012 15" rMBP shows up as a Samsung screen when I run the terminal command (LSN154YL01001) but the model is A00E. Wonder if it is a model number used for replacement screens, as my original LG screen developed pretty bad IR after seven months and was replaced.

You all are scaring me now. I thought this was fixed.

Hopefully my 13" rMBP is IR-free when it shows up. Sub'd for info.

I just got a 2013 rMBP 13.3" base model: absolutely no image retention and the screen looks amazing. It has an A018 screen model.

Reminder: IF (and that is a big "if") this issue does appear, it won't reveal itself until later on (ie. few weeks, few months, etc.). Brand new, you will hardly notice any of the tell-tale signs.

At this point, it is looking like there are at least two manufacturers of LCDs for the late-2013 13" model. We have seen A018 and A020 as possible LCD models in this machine. We still don't know which is which, though. And without people who own the late-2012 or early-2013 models of 13" posting their ColorSync model data, we know even less about their stories

you generally don't get image retention(IR) right out of the box, it comes generally a few weeks or months after.

People who open their box and do the test then report no IR are misleading others.

We've already been through all this and Apple's solution was replacing your screen with a Samsung display. Every single replacement was a Samsung, not LG, so take that for what it's worth :)

True.

However, to be clear, it has only been confirmed that there are 15" Samsung replacements; there has yet to be concrete proof of 13" Samsung's. If there is info to the contrary, I would love to hear about it though.

The rMBP in the video you posted is brand new, correct? I'm simply saying mine does not exhibit what is shown in that video. Not at all.

Understood. Under normal circumstances I don't see the problem either. However running the "IR test" is what allows the problem to appear. Did you try running that test?

It´s not true on mine I never performed any test and the problem arised after a few months ...

as far as I'm aware there is no command line test to determine the screen manufacturer of the 13" rMBP's so its kind of a guessing game as to who got what screen...if they're even different? I heard reports of people getting IR on their 13" rMBP's, but not sure to the extent. I mostly followed the 15" which is what I had.

I got a LG as my first rMBP, and after reading the thread I promptly returned it that same week. I must say the LG had better colors than my Samsung, but I've had my Samsung over a year now and I LOVE it...Best laptop I ever bought.

I'm not refuting that. In the context of the thread, I was responding back about how his brand new laptop would not show any signs of IR - the only way to even try to force it to happen would be through those tests, which, each person needs to determine for their own self how valid the results are for real world usage.

Very true - I suppose I was doing a bit too much parroting there, and I apologize. It is a guessing game as to what the 13" models actually use.

For a moment, I thought about trading up to a 15" but the size and pricetag is a bit much for me. :p For me, the 13" is the perfect size, and lines up nicely for my budget. Here's hoping for at least silent panel revisions. :D

I have an LG display on my 15" Retina. So far I had image retention once when I was shutting it down. The display turned the lighter gray that it sometimes does during shutdown and I could see the image of my desktop burned into the screen. I've performed the checkerboard test twice and it's passed both times. I'm still within the return policy...should I exchange it and hope for a Samsung panel or just stick with this one?

Many claim that the image retention gets worse over months.

I had a massive IR on my late 2012 15" retina. Screen was replaced at apple store for a samsung one.

Unfortunately new screen has some blue tinted areas, aspecially when get heated from the the laptop (bottom right corner, anove the fan).

Samsung had no IR, but I will get it replaced anyway, due to blue tint in one corner.

I have a late 2013, 13inch with A018 display. After running the aforementioned test for 8 mins, there was noticeable image retention on the left side of the display but not the right.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I have late 2013 13'' rMBP, mfg 610, A018,

No IR after 10 minutes test.

What brightness setting?

If I run the test at the lowest screen brightness, I get nothing, midway, an image after 10 minutes and at the highest setting, an image after one minute.

This is not a deal breaker for me, years ago, I created a screen sized grey image in photoshop that I keep in my desktop screen image folder. I use it once and awhile on all my computers and have for some time. I simply display it in full screen mode for about 30 minutes when I am not doing anything and it helps keeps displays from having the burn in of permanent things like docks, menu bars, etc. although I ran the 10 minute test on my MacPro's 30" ACD and old 2009 13" and got no image retention.

After running the ten minute test on the new Retina 13", I did my grey screen for no more than 3 minutes at mid brightness and the image was gone, including the dock on the bottom.

At the end of the day, I am not going to flip out and curse Apple over it, problems always get solved because of my professional relationship with them.

This. While the rate of the IR problem occurring may be higher than we'd like, not every Mac user reads forums. If this were an issue happening with a large proportion of MacBook Pros, Apple would put out some sort of recall/AppleCare extension for the display. *shrug*
