I should additional is going to be crap quality coating, reason I say this is because my 2010 screen touches the keys when closed and it's never had that problem, and I clean it with a microfiber and water out the tap, and cleaning solution.

I had the GPU fail and motherboard replaced due to that known issue, but no screen issues. How they can go from one plastic glass screen being fine to one that's rubbish is beyond me, surely it's the exact same in my 2010 as all these other machines? It's only the panels that are different?
Then again is this due to their obsession with thinness and they are pushing materials beyond their capabilities?

First thing I did last year when buying my 13.3" rMBP was to order a protective microfibre keyboard cover from RadTech. I've used these for years on all of my laptops. Until it arrived I used the protective paper sheet that Apple provided. No problems on my rMBP screen, ever. I also am not obsessive about wiping it clean all the time, and when I do I am very gentle.

Ive: We in the Apple ivory-hyper-bubble of BS are always keen to encourage customer-self-customisation of my, sorry, our gifts to the planet.

I just noticed a spot the other day appearing on the top around the bezel. Looks exactly like the coating is wearing off. It's not big enough to warrant a claim, but will need to monitor this to see if it gets worse. My mac is still under warranty and I will take it to the Genius Bar if it gets worse. I've never used glass cleaner - only water and a cloth.

Its an awful situation that apple has yet to address. Luckily my rMBP is not showing any symptoms, even as its close to turning 3 years old.

knock on wood, I'm with you. No problem on my mid-'12 rMBP.

Outrageous that Apple would charge repairs for what is clearly a defect.

It may be a defect but to the Apple person seeing it for the first time, they may conclude that it was the uer's fault. It doesn't appear to be widespread enough at this point to know for sure, but if a lot more cases start popping up and it becomes more apparent that it's a defect, then Apple should recall these units and fix them for free.

Should've stuck with the matte screen option, instead of this plastic piece of crap.

It's plasma deposition AR coating boyo. If it's the same as on the iMac's it's silicon dioxide and niobium pentoxide. If it's the same as on the iMac's I'd expect some iMac peeps to chime in here...

Same exact problem, would love to hear a follow up when Apple responds.

Late 2012, Macbook Pro Retina 13". Daily use & carrying it to work daily. I think the screen pressures onto the keyboard and removes the coating. The thicker line is the exact area that lies between the trackpad and spacebar. It was always carried inside an extra crumpler notebook sleeve.

When the screen is on and you use a normal viewing-angle, you will barely notice it, only when there is sun and you watch from the sides it is annoying.

Had the PowerBook 12", Macbook Air 13" First Gen and now this one. Never had any problems. Until now :)

I am a Photographer, so I always used the micro-fibre cleaning cloth that I use for my lenses. I doubt that cleaning has anything to do with the problem. It is just the keyboard pressuring on the display.

Jeezus H Christ that looks bad in the sun. Do you carry other books/gear pressed against the lid? How else would the screen hit the keys?

Some of the example pictures appear to provide evidence for quite severe symptoms of cleaning related ocd.

My late 2013 MBP has this problem. It is restricted to a couple of inch long strip just above the camera. I can only surmise that this has been caused by my lifting the screen with my thumb using the indented area just below the track pad (i.e. where you are supposed to lift the screen)

I only clean it with the apple microfibre cloth and have never used water or any other liquid on it. It does suggest that its caused by fingers on the screen which is something i avoid like the plague except for that one area i can't while lifting the lid.

I took it into the local Apple store who said that they will replace the screen under my Applecare cover but unfortunately this will mean giving it to them for a week while they do it. As its my own laptop that I use for work its difficult to be without it for this amount of time. They did say that i could book it in at any time though so can do it while i am on holiday.

I know some people have not had an easy experience when it comes to getting this fixed under warranty/applecare but hopefully if enough people say they are having the problem then apple will just get it sorted as its definitely a manufacturing issue of some kind.

that happened to me last fall and the apple store replaced my screen even though my warranty expired 20 months ago. they told me to "put something between the display and the keyboard on a closed lid" for the future"

i was gonna ask how that is a solution but i didnt wanna push my luck getting it replaced for free

its the trackpad and keyboard scratching the coating of when the lid is closed

I've seen a lot of people put a microfiber cloth between the screen and keyboard when closed.

Here's a perfect example.

The coating isn't plastic; it's often some sort of magnesium compound, but at any rate it's an inorganic thin film on the surface. When you buy eyeglasses it usually comes with an anti-scratch coating as well because otherwise it's going to just rub off.

I have the original 15" retina MacBook Pro mid 2011. This JUST happened to me last week. I still have 3 months on Apple Care and brought it to the Apple Store. They replaced the screen and top case over night with no questions asked. Painless and I was happy. I didn't think they would. If you have the issue, bring it in for sure.
