How many people can't read in this thread? It's been stated multiple times that the lag issues are only with the RMBPs in Apple's stores. People who purchase the machine and install the stability update are NOT experiencing lag. It amazes me how many time people seem to be ignoring this fact.

You apparently can't read. The fix does NOT fix the lag.

I bought the $2799 model and installed all the updates (1.4GB worth). It's still REALLY laggy, mostly when scrolling in any web browser. I've also been planning on testing with Mountain Lion, but haven't had time yet.

What bad behavior are you talking about? If you're talking about webpage scrolling, I'd tend to agree. It does look jumpy. I really wish someone with 2.6Ghz model would test this kind of thing :\

Yes it was very jumpy and the rubber band effect at the top of the page was even worse. Also the switch between fullscreen app and window mode was not as fluid as on my old Macbook Pro. 2.6 or 2.3 Ghz... this should not matter at all. My 4 year old Non-Unibody MacBook Pro does his job fine. I think it has to do with all that rendering in high res and then downsizing to lower resolusion. There has to be a Problem, because the old generation iMac is very fluid in performance and rendering webpages, with just dealing with a couple of pixels less!

looking really forward to that!

Yeah, the Geniuses are the repair people, and they don't sell stuff (or really keep up with the detail of what's on the sales floor).

The Specialists are the employees that sell stuff and should know what's on the floor.

Sorry, I meant the sales people.

Just another data point. I tried the floor model at the store (Michigan Ave. Chicago), and it was really bad video performance. When you pressed the expose button, it didn't animate at all, just jumped to the window thumbnails. And when I tried the scrolling and scaling in iPhoto, it was like a slide show.

Now I have my own unit (showed up this morning), and it isn't showing any of those issues. I haven't installed any updates yet. The expose works just as fast and smooth as the 2011 macbook pro (15) sitting next to it. Scrolling in safari is kind of jumpy, I think that has more to do with Safari. Did you notice that is switches back to 1/2 resolution when you to a pinch to scale on it? Also the problem goes away on pages with no images.

I'm going to agree with those that say the RMBP has lag. I went to see it first thing this morning and when set to the highest setting (when scaling), simple websites would lag/display choppiness even with the discrete GPU. Again, this was first thing in the morning when the store opened so the RMBP should be "fresh" (Apple restores their Mac's at night to original setting, or that's what they did before so I'm going off that). If you select the third scaling option, it's back to normal, everything is all smooth.

Now, everyone is going to have their point of view of what lag/choppiness is.

What I'm comparing it to is :

5,1 MacBook Pro (Late-2008) with 9400M: webpages scroll smoothly.
8,2 MacBook Pro (Late-2011) with IntelHD 3000 (at native 1680x1050): webpages scroll smoothly.

Using the above as a base of what we want to expect, the RMBP at it's native resolution does not compare to the above, there is definitely noticeable lag.

(NOTE: this does not compare the RMBP in heavy/intensive tasks)

That's good and bad I guess. Good for me as it would save me money, because the only reason I was considering getting the 2.6Ghz one was if this scrolling jumpiness would be eliminated. Are you seeing this in an unscaled resolution, or only in 'higher res' scaled ones? I'm guessing other UI operations are fine, just the scrolling is the problem?

Update: Resizing windows is also extremely choppy on my 2.3Ghz RMBP. Scrolling lags a lot on websites with images. All other UI operations that i've tried are fine, just occasional stutter.

It's unfortunately much more laggy and stuttery overall than my Late-2010 MBA.

Sorry but all the differing opinions in this thread have confused me - has anyone experienced screen lag on the default resolution?

I just bought a 2.3 GHz Retina MBP at Best Buy and as soon as I got home I updated all the software. Lagging was an issue, specifically Safari, on any resolution and on any GPU. It wasn't nearly as bad as the display models at the Apple Store, but I did notice it.

However, I did just complete an install of Mountain Lion Developer Preview 4 and it is 100% better. It's exactly as you would expect a brand new, $2k machine to act. So for everyone with a new Retina MBP and having some laggy performance, the solution might be just to wait a few weeks for 10.8 to be released.

Doesn't make sense. Apple released a product that they are considering their flagship computer, and they failed to quality control or real-world test it for these issues? I'm not buying it. The issue that is...the computer is already ordered. If this is an issue, I'm positive Cupertino will fix it without much delay.

Phew! I guess it's base model for me after all.

Can you try window resizing as well, please? Try something simple like finder windows, and something complex like Itunes Store window.

My (base) 2010 MBA lags *horribly* when resizing Itunes Store window, but resizes finder windows smoothly. Which ones did you try resizing?

Here's a quick video to show the UI. iTunes window is still just a little laggy but that's always been the case on any computer.

Yeah, that looks pretty good to me! I guess i'll be installing ML DP4 first thing after I get MBPR :)

About Moutain Lion, I know this isn't the place to talk about it, but is it stable enough for daily use on it's current revision ? Can I install DP4 on my future retina macbook safely ?

I just stopped by the Apple store to pick up an accessory and tried the things showed in this video on one of the display models.

No lag.. moving on

Definitely. I haven't had any issues whatsoever. The Retina MBP runs so much better, so much more smoothly on DP4. I haven't had any crashes or glitches at all. Like Apple said in the keynote, DP4 is very close to a GM.

Thanks for posting the video! The Safari performance in DP4 looks much better and great to know that I don't need to cancel my order. Is this Safari 5.2 or 6?

This is terrible. Everyone that ordered should immediately cancel their orders and wait for Apple to fix this.....

So my shipping date will move up

Thanks, but says "Video is Private"

Hi Guys, the video is laggy on iTunes where it has many pictures.
The lag does not happen on text only page, but on any application with many pictures. This includes:
iPhoto, iTunes, safari, etc
Based on the video, safari was loaded on text only page. This is why it s smooth.
But you can see it s lagging on Itunes with many pictures

Hi, could you a longer video on page with many pictures please?
your video from 00:18-00:20 shows that scrolling on iTunes is laggy

Thank you

That's not true. On my RMBP, every website is as smooth as the one I showed in the video. My facebook feed, engadget, cnn, everything. iTune store has always been slower, on every mac I own. My 2011 MacBook Air does the same thing.
