Prices are going to increase. They are going to introduce a new design with a completely different chassis and different components, as opposed to the unibody design they are using since 2008. Maybe they are going to make audacious moves like going SSD-only as well, while retaining decent storage. Expect the prices to grow $50-100 and drop with the next speedbump.
I hear what you're saying, but consider what happened when new generations/redesigns of MacBook Air came out. They were cheaper. So it's hard to say what'll happen here; it could go either way. But I hope it goes down, because IMO right now the 13" and 11" MacBook Pro/Air are reasonably priced, while 15 and 17" MBPs are still overpriced.

First they try to ruin OS X with iOS features and now we have to deal with subpar i-device displays. What a load. Apple needs to step up to the plate on this one, or I'm done.:mad::mad:

I wonder if the retina display will be standard option or a byo type upgrade?

I'm no expert but the general consumer doesn't care about retina level displays if it equals a savings. Also wouldn't we have a more powerful gpu if it's not pushing retina resolutions? I for one who would be happy with just a plain faster and more power efficient mbp over one with a retina display...

Apple could easily afford to bite the bullet on this and only have a 10% margin instead of a 30% margin while they wait for prices to drop.

It all depends on what Apple's priorities are.

Are they hoping to increase the amount of people using MacBook Pros? Then a 10% profit margin will do. They'll make it up in volume, accessories, and a higher amount of people converting to the Mac.

On the other hand, this has to offset the stock market being upset with lower margins. If the stock is currently priced at $550 and an Apple employee has, say, 1,000 shares in his retirement account, this is $550,000. Would that Apple employee be willing to cut his retirement by $50,000 if the share price goes down $50? You'd have upset Apple employees, which eventually results in other competitors getting their employees.

It's a very complex game.

no they arent, their computers are priced at HALF of the MPB.

Not for a decent system. Yes, if you go to Wal-Mart and look for the El-Cheapo DELL or Acer, you'll pay $400. And in 6 months you'll have a $400 paper weight that's falling apart.

They were selling iPhone 3GS for $100 less than iPhone 4 when that came out, yet most people still went for the Retina-carrying iPhone 4.

The average consumer may not realize it yet, but once they use a Retina display on a laptop, it will be hard to go back.

THIS.

Those glossy MIRROR screens are AWFUL.

I have to disagree, I much prefer glossy display's versus matte ones, and my reasoning behind this is because with matte display's we get a sparkle/grainy effect..

As a Web Designer, I find this very annoying, and it's often hard to differentiate between a Noise effect on Photoshop vs native graininess the Monitor comes with.. And having owned so many monitors in my life time, It really doesn't matter how high end your matte display is..

I own a HP ZR22W S-IPS display, and It suffers from this aswell.. So personally I love glossy displays, especially for Desktop as they are used indoors..

I saw and played with the new iPad and the retina display was not a mayor factor at all.

When I first looked at the new iPad against the iPad 2 in the apple store, I could not see much of a difference, but after having my 3rd Gen iPad for a couple of months now, when I look at my friend's iPad 2, the screen looks like it's made from LEGO!

It's one of those things that you don't really notice, because it just looks so right. But after having this experience with the iPad, I would go for a Retina computer any day, even if it is £100 extra.

As far as price bump goes I think It's still very reasonable, you can't have it all right :p Producing an IPS LED Display and providing such a high resolution is no doubt going to be expensive..

Even though the DVD drive and some ports are coming off, USB3+2nd thunderbolt+SSD+retina will undoubtedly cut apple's profit margin tremendously if sticking to the current price points. This is Apple's chance to offer a bang for your buck, something they are not known for doing, but a move that would keep them ahead of the competition for 2+ years. It is interesting to watch which direction they end up going. Also wouldn't be surprised if entry level 15" is discontinued as a result.

Apple dosen't have to license USB3 comes with the CPU. Plus, it's only like $3 to begin with lawl

I can see Apple buying up all these panels, making it hard for competitors to get their hands of any of them, at least until production significantly increases. With a monopoly on the supply of these displays, they could easily eat the extra costs and still come out huge winners until everyone else manages to get into the Retina market.

I am concerned about 2 things, the first is the hardrive, will it be at least 500gb? i dont want something like the MBA's with 250gb maximum because i need a lot of memory because i store loads of movies and games. the second thing is now the price its not an issue for me but i seriously hope they dont increase it drastically like the MBP's become 1800 pounds for a low end 15 inch and for a high end they would be 2000 pounds plus :/ oh well lets see what apple does...

Ha ha. Yeah. I don't remember anyone complaining that glass CRTs were hard to read and we used those things for 20 years.

But suddenly glass is impossible to use on a computer screen? I don't get it either.

Then you have a bad memory ;) The companies I worked for we bought thousands of CRT "hoods" or hanging glare filters. That was one of the main selling points when moving from CRT to LCD that those types of devices were no longer required.

I don't mind paying the extra $100 because they've delayed releasing the wretched thing for so long, I've overshot my saving target and now have too much money!

Perhaps I'll still have surplus to cover the cost of a USB superdrive and USB-ethernet cable (both of which I'll almost never use)

2880x1800? I had to buy reading glasses when I got my last MBP 17" because everything was so small on it's 1920 x 1200 display. Isn't it time to update the OS to factor this in, much like the iPad OS does?

I know you can set the font size on most apps and adjust icon size, etc, but the OS in general seems designed for lower resolution displays. Maybe I'm just too old and should be taken out back and shot.

And despite my rant, I will likely buy a 15" on day one.

Apple has been quietly updating Lion to support HiDPI mode for quite some time now.

If you enable HiDPI mode, nothing will appear tiny-- but the elements that aren't updated will just appear more pixelated, much like the iPad apps that aren't yet retina-optimized.

I'd love a new MBP 15" but since I just bought a new mac mini a couple weeks ago, I'm going to hold out for the updated Air to replace my current notebook.

If tax dodging Apple wants to win customers over then I say they absorb that cost. They have more profit than anyone and it would be nice to not be ripped off just for a display that they ultimately want you to have. We shall see.

They didn't get all that profit by eating costs.

Why not solder the SSD onto the logic board and leave the HD bay?

Keep the 500GB HD standard, introduce a mid level configuration with standard 128GB SSD soldered on (optional 256GB SSD) with optional hard drive, and then upper level configuration with 128GB SSD soldered on (optional 256GB) with a standard 1GB hard drive.

Does anyone else want a 3360x2100 Retina screen option for the 15" MBP? The 2880x1800 one is useless, too little screen real estate - it would be a downgrade from the existing 1680x1050 15" MBP.

agree. double 1280x800 on the 13" sucks too! i would rather have an upgraded air panel with better color gamut than a retina 2560x1600 screen.

"Retina", according to Apple, just means that the eye is unable to see individual pixels at a normal viewing distance. Every MacBook, iMac, and Apple display is already "retina".

I don't know how to say this without it sounding like an insult, but I honestly think you should get your eyes checked.

They can't. Have you seen what AAPL has been doing lately? If they announce lower profit margins the stock will plummet.
