Retina-Resolution Displays to Add Up to $100 to Apple's MacBook Pro Costs

Anyone ever consider that Retina on a Macbook could be an option? Kind of like the matte option of yesteryear? $200+ option for Retina. Still continue to offer standard screens at their previous base prices...

If tax dodging Apple wants to win customers over then I say they absorb that cost. They have more profit than anyone and it would be nice to not be ripped off just for a display that they ultimately want you to have. We shall see.
Apple usually charges for the hardware, but absorbs some costs for software. Once you buy an Apple device, OS updates are either free or inexpensive (compared to other OSes). iWork and iLife apps are also cheap.

That said, they've been lowering hardware prices with their latest generations of MacBook Airs, so there's hope.

P.S. No point in calling Apple tax dodging since every commercial company is doing the same thing, so it's not unique.

Hard to say without having direct info about the supply chain, but it occurs to me that perhaps other, more basic parts (keyboards, trackpads, logic boards, aluminum) are getting cheaper over time. Couple that with the thought that the new units will use less material due to being thinner and the cost might come close to balancing out?

Nobody wondering what's going to happen with the 1680x1050 Macbook Pros? Sure, 2880x1800 gives the user a crisper picture, but the useable screen estate would go down (after all, it's "just" 1440x900 at twice the density). I myself wish for 3360x2100 screen but I am fully aware that it's not going to happen...

Not for a decent system. Yes, if you go to Wal-Mart and look for the El-Cheapo DELL or Acer, you'll pay $400. And in 6 months you'll have a $400 paper weight that's falling apart.

Compare 1800$ PC's to MBP's and you get more for your money in terms of hardware and software is really subjective.

When comparing objectively, MBP is overpriced for what you get. Fact.

Still wont stop me from buying one for development purposes but I call it how it is.

Their computers are EASILY much less than their price to build. A retina display would not cost $100 to build. They are the largest company in the world and they can reduce their margins. After all, what will they do with all that money? Maybe they can buy a football team or something :D

THIS.

Those glossy MIRROR screens are AWFUL.
Agree, cannot stand glossy, it's the only major complaint I have with the 13 which I love for it's size portability as I travel a lot. Reflections are so awful. Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot not continuing an anti-glare version of the new screens, have it on the 15 and it's incredible. So sharp and accurate yet way easier on the eyes, I feel like I get eye strain on the glossy which others mention on here and I have better then excellent vision at 20/15 .

I am.

Anyone else becoming concerned this is going to sell like wildfire? I really hope there won't be considerable wait lists for these new MacBooks. I'm genuinely concerned there won't be an international roll-out for the first month...

I paid extra to get a matte 1680x1050 screen already.

Depending on what the working resolution ends up being, and if a matte option is available, i'd go for it when this laptop does. A switch to SSD is mos def. welcome.

I hope the rumors of the GT650 are just rumors and they they offer a GTX version of the Nvidia GPU on their top line MBPro.

The GT650 is very nice, but I'd rather the new MBPro have a slightly more powerful GPU chip.

I think there will be some delay but not much. I really hope they inform us about the iMac also and the MBAir so we can make informed decisions on our $$$

"Retina", according to Apple, just means that the eye is unable to see individual pixels at a normal viewing distance. Every MacBook, iMac, and Apple display is already "retina".

I have iMac 21" and i can see the pixels from a normal viewing distance.
Am not complaining though, love my iMac's display.

I'd pay $200 more for retina.
I don't think Apple will increase their prices, however.

Your dream will surely come true. If retina adds $100 to the build cost, Apple will just double it (or even treble it) to maintain their extortionate profit margin....whilst paying the people who build it the sort of wages that robs them of dignity. Thats what I call "magical".

MacRumors has found a way to switch it up a bit. Now instead of a Retina Display story, we have a Retina-Resolution Display story. Fresh!

Up next:
Retina-Resolution Display Said to Add Up to $80 to Apple's MacBook Air Costs

An extra £40 for a 13-inch laptop with a resolution of 2560 x 1600....! You're having a laugh aren't you? I'd pay that in a heartbeat! LOL

It's already +100 for hi-res anyway, isn't it? Not much of a change there then.
Will hi-res become the standard and then be +100 for retina? That would make absolute sense, nobody should be upset about this if they are.

2880x1800? I had to buy reading glasses when I got my last MBP 17" because everything was so small on it's 1920 x 1200 display. Isn't it time to update the OS to factor this in, much like the iPad OS does?

I know you can set the font size on most apps and adjust icon size, etc, but the OS in general seems designed for lower resolution displays. Maybe I'm just too old and should be taken out back and shot.

And despite my rant, I will likely buy a 15" on day one.

Then I'm too old as well. Opted for high res MBP 15", sometimes I kick myself. I miss my Mac Plus.

Apple should offer three models
-glossy retina
-matte retina (for a bit extra)
-standard (which would be considered sub-retina, so you subtract 50 from total cost of macbook pro)

They can make the cost up within the total price of the notebook. Why make it an upgrade that some people wont splurge for?

Make it standard that way when you advertise your product you can say Apple is all Retina across the board, iPhone, iPad, iMac, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air.

Regardless of the what happens, the ball is in Apple's court. What do I mean?

Go look for any Windows laptops with a backlit keyboard and an HD screen (which wont be even close to the resolution of retina). You wont find any laptop with such specs for under 1100-1200. Even then the build quality will be laughable at best especially if you are comparing buying an HP/Dell to Apple's build quality.

If Apple prices these macbooks competitively Windows laptops will definitely take a huge hit, especially the ultrabook section of the market.

If "According to Shim, a Retina 15.4-inch display at 2880x1800 resolution for a density of 220 pixels per inch (pip)"

Is true, then what's going to run it? According to Nvidia, the GT 650M can support a resolution up to 2560 X 1600!

http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-650m/specifications

That's what I don't get with these 'Retina' rumours, what the hell is going to power the screen? That's why I think sure the screens will be high res, but NOTHING like what the rumours proclaim.

This is why you can forget gaming at the screens native res, the GPU will simply lack the power needed at that resolution.

And as for any price difference, Apple can damn well assort that themselves considering the massive mark up they slap on their computers!!

And on the stupid comment on the drives, have they all totally forgotten about mSata or BLADE SATA SSD's?? Use one of these PLUS an HDD and problem solved!

Apple could take the hit and absorb the costs and make all monitors retina for the same price and people would scream for joy and buy them up.

However, they could charge $100 premium and people will scream for joy and buy them up.

Therefore, they will not absorb the costs.

WAIT, what is the price increase for the iPad retina display?

Since when do companies absorb costs of any products? You, the consumer, absorbs all costs.
