Well I just went from the 1 to the new and the difference in speed is the biggest difference for me. Sure the screen is better but the iPad 1's screen wasn't exactly a blurry mess. Text is clearer without a doubt, but images looked fine and I never noticed a problem reading on my first generation. In fact, the dictation feature has impressed me at least as much as the screen. I'm pleased and will happily keep this for the next two generations.

So iPad 1 to iPad 2 was a "wow" experience with no screen upgrade, but the third one goes to retina and you say "meh"?

I fail to see the logic.
I kind of see that logic. The ipad 2 was much different than the original in terms of feel and weight. The new ipad looks almost exactly like the 2 until you compare screens... I skipped the 2, so going from the OG to the 3 is a really nice jump for me. It also doesnt hurt that LTE here in LA is faster than my Cable at home

I have returned mine for a full refund. Yellow 1/4 top of my screen with blotches everywhere else (enough about that). I live hours from an Apple Store and don't want to go through the shipping replacement drill. I will stick with my iPad 2 until our Best Buy/Target/Walmart get more back in stock. They all sold out the first day.

I read constantly and want the new iPad for the clear text.

Is that the real reason you returned it? I think that extra weight and thickness was why. Who would want this heavy thick tablet when the have a 2?:)

Nonsense isn't fun either. I can actually read the iPad without my glasses. There is no comparison to the 2. We haven't all had retina screens for ever. Maybe people should spend less on their phones to. Why did you buy an iPhone when you could just get a trac phone. Both make calls and texts.

----------

How weak would you have to be to:

1 feel the difference in weight
2. Not be able to hold it

Just asking because I can't tell the difference.

I wonder what people are looking at when they say this screen is no better than the iPad 2? Make sure you're viewing something that will take advantage of the increased resolution.

To me, the new screen is simply breathtaking.

For $100 extra dollars you get a better screen (what does your laptop have to do with it?), a much better camera, dictation, and the quad core graphic processor. All of these items will help with resale value. Just for that fact alone, it's worth $100 extra dollars.

The problem is that you're all over the place. Are you comparing the new iPad to a laptop or are you comparing it to the iPad 2 or to the iPhone? I would say 95 out of 100 people have been wow'd at how much better the new display is compared to the iPad 2. In fact, a photographer did a review the other day and compiled an image of an eagle's face, split down the middle with the old iPad resolution on the left and the new one on the right. It was pretty obvious how much better the new display is. But apparently it's no better than your laptop's display, which is why you recommend the iPad 2 to everyone? How does that even make sense?

By the way, did you bother looking at a web page? All of the text is just as substantially upgraded as iBooks. But maybe you don't read web pages either? :)

I worked at BB during college and saw people tell me the DVD looked as good as the Blu-Ray. No joke. 30-50yr old people told me they didn't see what was the big deal. They also never noticed the stretched out screen that 4:3 looks like when you force it to be 16:9. Does that make them right?

I expected that people, in general, won't look at the screen and realize what's in it. But the screen is a lot better. From color saturation to clarity.

But there is $100 worth of upgrades in the new iPad over the 2. Not to mention that the resale value and the number of interested buyers will be higher with the new one when it's time to unload it.

To me, the retina screen is the equivalent of coming home with a basket full of apples, and then the next day coming home with the same basket full of apples except that there is one more apple in the basket.

It's differerent. But it's not that different.

I have an iPad 2, my iPad 3 money will be goin towards the next iPhone. Or MacBook, which ever comes first.

But allow me to clarify. There's nothing wrong with the new iPad. In fact, if I had bought one I would be very happy with it. But then I think that this money could go towards something else. The new iPad has a few technicalities.

For one, retina display is not exactly cogent. How much hunting down do you have to do in order to see the retina display? I would've thought they would have at least updated their own YouTube app. It does not allow you to watch high definition videos. I looked at a 4K video laptop vs. iPad, the laptop was high definition the iPad was (compared to the laptop) poor quality.

I know the difference between DVD in BLU ray. That's why I was disappointed by the display.

If you'd asked me what I was hoping for, I would tell you that I was hoping that they would go beyond retina. Which they sort of did. With the whole 2048xetc thing, but I didn't see a big difference.

Answer me these questions. What are you using the graphics chip for? How often do you use 4G? What opportunity do you have to use the iPads camera, when your iPhone has the same camera? I know you don't use dictation often.

I'm using mine right now and, while I really do love it, I find it more convenient to use my MacBook pro. I haven't had an iPad since August of 2010, so perhaps this will come in handy when I'm traveling or just out and about. I'd also like to use it more with my music production.

Right now I'm undecided as to whether I should keep it or not.

Because nobody wants to waste money.

It's common sense. Why pay $500.00 for the new iPad when you can get an iPad 2 for $400.00?

Because for a mere $100 you're getting an amazing display, much better cameras, better radios (bluetooth, wifi, lte, etc..), quad core graphics and the same battery life. Just because these don't seem to be significant upgrades for you doesn't mean that "nobody wants to waste money".

Just go by the features:

Retina display: Looked at the screen, it's no better than my laptop screen. It can't play HD videos from YouTube. The term retina is just redundant. If you squint your eyes, you might see something, but other than that, not fascinating.

You looked at the screen? Where, on video?

A5X chip: Quad-core graphics. Um, for what? There's no real graphics intensive games on iOS. So, toss.
RealRacing 2
Infinity Blade
Infinity Blade 2
Mass Effect Infiltrator
Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy
Touchgrind BMX
Epoch
Galaxy On Fire 2 HD
Shadowgun
Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation
Dead Space For iPad
Anomaly Warzone Earth HD
Backstab
Six Guns
Infinity Blade Dungeons (Upcoming)
etc..
etc..

Ditto, I have been thinking this for a while.

He always demanded perfection.

His mere presence created a "reality distortion field", which drove his designers and engineers toward near-impossible achievements. IMO, if Steve was still around, the new iPad would be as thin as the iPad 2, and weigh the same if not less.

Right, because the entire development of the iPad 3 took place in the three months after Steve's death

I felt the same way about the iPad 2 coming from the 1. It wasn't worth the upgrade. But from the 1 to 3! This thing is amazing. I'm glad I waited for it.

Look at this very forum or any text heavy site on the iPad 2 and then compare it to the new iPad.

I think you'll noticed that it's like looking through a screen door on the iPad 2, while the new iPad is sharp — pin sharp.

Agree. The iPad 3 has ruined my MacBook. It makes my MacBook screen look bad. I'm going to have to upgrade my laptop this year.

I looked at a 4K video laptop vs. iPad, the laptop was high definition the iPad was (compared to the laptop) poor quality.
Ahhh, so now we're comparing it to a 4k laptop. How much did said laptop cost?
Answer me these questions. What are you using the graphics chip for? How often do you use 4G? What opportunity do you have to use the iPads camera, when your iPhone has the same camera? I know you don't use dictation often.

Let's see, the retina display is apparent in almost every application, from bowser to iBooks to movies to games. The graphics is nicely powering my 1080p movies and games (most of which haven't been released yet). I'll agree with you about the camera. I would have preferred a better front facing camera. I never use the rear one.

I have an iPad 1 (gave it to my grandkids), an iPad 2, and now the new one. I guess it's because I'm older but the display hasn't overwhelmed me either. Maybe i don't see it or maybe it doesn't matter to me, don't know.

And I'm not entirely happy about the weight increase (yes, I CAN tell the difference). And I'm not really happy about the 'yellow dusting' in the bottom left corner. (hoping it will go away but may have to exchange).

But I'm really enjoying the LTE, increased RAM, and I got the 64GB version this time (others are 32s). I one it the folks who does use the camera a lot. I take a bunch of pics/videos of my grandkids who love turning right around and watching them so it's a nice improvement.

So all in all, it's a toss up but I'm leaning towards keeping it. Some trade offs but there always are. Just depends on whether they balance out for each person.

I was comparing my ipad 2 to my dad's ipad 3

The performance is the same really in terms of app launching/web browsing and whatnot

The screen on the 3 is nice BUT for me, it was not hugely different imo. My dad, who is close to 60, couldn't even tell them apart without really scrutinizing it and going "ohh I see it now" in terms of text crispness.

I will say that if you are getting an ipad for the first time, the 3 is a no brainer. If you are upgrading from the 1, the 3 is a good upgrade. However, if you have a 2, I would consider waiting till next years ipad

Bottom line. If you have disposable income do what you want.

If you are on a budget and own an iPad 2. The new iPad isn't worth the performance upgrade of the iPad 2. It's slightly faster but that's it. The real reason is purely for the screen.

The camera is nice but not essential since most of us have cell phones cameras 5-8mp that work well or better than new iPad.

If you are new to tablets and it's ur first iPad. Get the new iPad over iPad 2. The $100 difference is minimal for the majority of people. Or if you have original iPad the new iPad is worth the upgrade.

And all of those games can be played on your iPad 2. As they were made for it. If you really want to get into specifics, you probably wouldn't even notice the difference in gameplay. I'm going to run more tests on it, but they sure didn't demo that in the Keynote.

I was there at the opening and I have to say that I never heard one person say "Wow." The small upgrades are something, but if you have an iPad 2 already, I don't see a whole lot of people busting through the doors for it.

Why did I buy an iPhone of I could just get a tracfone. :/ that's not reasonable argument. You seem to think that small things make all the difference. The iPad 2 is lighter than the new one and that's actually an advantage.

I thought the next iPad would be thinner than the iPad 2 actually.

Can we drop the "games" argument? Games requiring the 4 core GPU have not been released yet. It's been two days since this iPad has been in anyone's hands.

Regarding battery charging time, charge it when you're not using the iPad even if you think it still has a lot of charge. With lithium-ion batteries, the higher the current charge level the faster it will charge. Lithium-ion batteries love being charged all the time. They are not like Ni-Cd batteries where you have to wait until the charge level is less than 3% before charging it. With lithium-ion batteries that is a no-no. You will shorten its lifespan.

There are Games that have been optimized for the retina display, however.

Why do you assume everyone has an iPhone?

I don't want people to think that I don't like the new iPad, because I do. I just didn't buy this one.

horses for courses really...

To say that the screen is merely adding an apple is factually not correct. It's double the resolution and close to 4 times the pixels. It has a higher resolution than almost every HD TV out there. Not to mention, the color saturation is awesome.

To put it in perspective. I took a photo on my iphone yesterday and forgot I had enabled photostream on the ipad. I happened to click on photos on the ipad and the photo popped up and was just phenomenal.

I can notice the difference in weight and thickness, but nothing terrible, I find it to be comfortable.

I believe I could hold the new ipad in one hand for about 3 hours of comforatble use, but realistically, only hold it one handed for about 40 minutes at a time due to other things coming up.

It is 4x the resolution and thus 4x the amt of pixels

I agree. Jobs would of demanded a new battery tech which is light.

That technology doesn't exist. Even Steve Jobs's RDF couldn't overcome the laws of physics. Battery technology has moved more slowly than chip and display technology for years now. What's possible is that Steve Jobs would have delayed the new iPad until Samsung's 32nm processors and Qualcomm's 28nm chipsets were available. However, even that likely would have just mean that the battery could be slightly smaller (so maybe the weight would have stayed the same). It also would have meant we'd have waited until May or June for the new iPad, and people would be complaining that the iPad was falling behind all the 1920x1080 Android tablets that will be coming out over the coming months.

I like my new iPad but I'm hard pressed to tell people with iPad 2s to upgrade especially when they won't get much money from the sale of the iPad 2.

The weight is very notible. But damn that screen is lovely

iPad 2 owners may well be better off waiting a year or so. However, most people don't own the iPad 2. For someone new to the iPad (or iPad 1 owners), the new iPad is a great device.
