I think it was designed with a rear-facing camera so that people can walk around holding the iPad at eye-level and not bump into anything. :D

Facetime requires two cameras.

If this is the "killer feature" of iPad 2, I'm happy I got iPad 1. I already have an iphone, and while using Facetime is cool, my arm gets a little tired after about 5 minutes of holding it there. I can't imagine how long I could last holding an iPad out there.

FaceTime doesn't require two cameras. They've got it on macs and they only have one camera.

Why a rear facing camera?

I'm not sure I quite understand a rear facing camera on the iPad... I complete see the need for a front facing camera for FaceTime... but I'm just trying to imagine holding my big (compared to my iPhone) iPad up in the air to take a pic or mov... just doesn't seem natural... and doesn't seem like an "Apple thing to do"...

I didn't need 1 camera on the iPad I certainly don't need 2...

Quick! Email Steve Jobs and tell him. I don't think its late enought for a re-design.

As 50 other posters have already pointed out in this 2 page thread, FaceTime can utilize both front and rear-facing cameras. The rear-facing camera is to allow the person you are speaking with to see the same thing you are seeing. Suppose you are FaceTiming your spouse, who is on a business trip, and your baby gets up and starts walking. Instead of turning the whole device around to show them, you can just press a button to show them. It's actually a very Apple thing to do because they demonstrated this in their original FaceTime keynote.

Ahhh

Now this is why I could see needing a rear facing camera... I could develop an app that shows a view from the rear facing camera up in the corner of the screen so that I can easily see what/who I'm about to run in to while I'm walking and reading...

There are plenty of uses for a rear facing camera. Business, reference photos, eBay app, barcode scanning, etc.....it's not just about personal pics.

I agree. Initially I thought I was going to hold out for iPad 2, instead of going for the 1st gen, because I figured that iPad 2 would have a camera.

About 3 months after the iPad launch, though, I decided to go for the iPad, and not wait...My iPhone 4 handles my picture-taking quite well, and I don't even use the Facetime feature on it.

If the existence of a camera is the defining feature of the iPad 2, I'm going to just stick with my 1st gen.

There will be 2 cameras

It's just logic. Think about Face Time and it's functions. Share what you see...
Also Apple like to sell their iMovie App and in that case the iPad need a rear facing cam.

So, Reuters read two reports on MacRumors, contacted all the original sources conveniently contained within, got 3 responses of any note, and wrote a news item. MacRumors then picked up the news item which contained one (1) additional confirmation not contained in the original MacRumors articles.

Sound about right?

I think a cool AR iPad app would be drawing constellations and planet locations over a live feed of the night sky. At least that would be interesting to check out, IMO.

A rear facing camera? REALLY? Useless in a large iPad device. I may not buy one if it has this- really

That's so true. I didn't buy an iPad because it had a Chinese keyboard and that voiceover thing - when am I going to use those?

They are doing it for two reasons. One because facetime allows rear camera use to show people what you are looking at and its a good function and two because they know a camera probobly costs next to nothing and people will bitch if it only has a front camera even though the majority of people will never use either of them. Also by putting in another useless camera and calling it a feature it lets them leave out REAL features which they can save for ipad 3 to make people want to buy that one too

I see so many negative comments about "Why a rear camera?" and I can see a use for it, with a slight case modification. I have the Marware Eco-Vue case for my iPad:

Click on the 3rd pic to see the hand strap on the case. With a slight case redesign, you slip the iPad over your hand via the strap, freeing you other hand to press the button to take pics. Might be good for inventory purposes, taking pics on the go, or however else anyone wants to use it. :)

Don't worry everyone.

We will gradually see the giant amount of postings saying a rear mounted camera is a stupid idea, get smaller and smaller as we get nearer to launch.

Then a few months later, there will be only a tiny tiny few that wish to then say Apple did the wrong things.

It's the "That's not the next iPhone4, it's a cheap Chinese copy" syndrome happening again.

Once Apple has made it, and it's been used, almost all the naysayers will fall into line :)

Seen it before and we will see it again with the iPad3

I'm going to laugh so hard when I see someone take an iPad out to take a picture.

I'll still get an iPad 2. I don't need the rear-facing camera but whatever.

SO TRUE, SO TRUE.

How is it about choice. If rumors are true, if I buy Ipad 2 I will have NO choice. It comes with two cameras and that's it. I will have to PAY for the cameras, whether I use them or not.

Yes, you still have choices and one of them is Not buying the iPad.

I think I will start selling small sticky patches on Ebay as iPad2 Camera Covers for people who don't think it should be there.
They can stick the patch over the lens, pretend it's not there and then we can all be happy :)
