Sounds like a waste of a perfectly good camera to me. I just don't see anyone using an ipad as a camera especially if the size gets any bigger. Front facing for use of face time understandable.

How is it about choice. If rumors are true, if I buy Ipad 2 I will have NO choice. It comes with two cameras and that's it. I will have to PAY for the cameras, whether I use them or not.

Steve Jobs loves to do the following at product announcements: add features, improve performance, and drop the price. Also, if you don't like having the functionality of a rear-facing camera (even though you won't be forced to use it), then don't buy an iPad2, but instead buy the (likely) discounted original iPad after the release of the iPad2.

Actually VERY USEFUL considering Apple is marketing the iPad towards businesses. When doing inventory, the rear camera can be used as a barcode scanner! There are many other applications for a rear camera other than just taking pictures.

In this example it's much more feasible to use a iTouch or iPhone

Let's make it clear.

I don't want a front Camera

I've never bought a WebCam

I don't want to use Facetime, I will never use Facetime, Video calling has been in the UK for a decade now and apart from the odd rare use it gets forgotten about.

However, all that said. I still feel it's good the iPad has one as I love any enhancement in any product. So despite me not wanting it, or ever going to use it. I still will be happy for it to be added.

Projector

** Inside Scoop **

Apple will differentiate the iPad and iPhone by having a rear camera on the iPad that projects images or movies, theirs talks about even Keynote but that's not confimerd. Much like the Compact DSLRS from makers like Nikon & Sony. Next iPhone will in corporate the projector style camera as well. I'm not sure about the Touch but more the likely it will.

Their will be no SD card slot.

I don't see a point in the rear camera; but that doesn't mean someone else won't. It's all about choice! :D

The purpose of the RF camera is not to take photos but rather to be used with FaceTime. One of the features of FaceTime is the ability to switch cameras so the person on the other end can see what you see.

iMovie on the iPad using it's own footage seems a no brainer.

I can imagine people uploading iPad2 videos here the 1st day they get their new iPads :D

I'm more interested in a potential higher resolution display. I have to say, when the iPad first came out, I thought the display was magnificent. After buying an iPhone 4, not so much. The iP4 has really spoiled me. The iPad just looks pixelated to me now.

I'm not sure if they can incorporate a "retina display" into the much larger iPad due to cost factors, but the iP4 has made it necessary in my mind.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Apple delivers with the iPad v2.

A rear facing camera? REALLY? Useless in a large iPad device. I may not buy one if it has this- really

Wow... never knew someone would not buy a device that has too many features? I'm sure they're just doing it to drive more customers away! LOL!

Really... I could see this being useful for business applications. Like in the case of real estate. An inspector could use an iPad to take notes and pictures from the same device. There could be some very useful applications build for insurance adjusters, doctors and other professions where including a picture is needed or would be nice.

I can't imagine someone using their iPad as their primary camera... I can't see that with my iPhone (or any phone for that matter), but it would be nice for the occasional snap shot and also I think there will be tons of business cases that will love this. I'm guessing this is the logic and let's face it... it's not like camera CCD's are expensive or that iOS does not already support it, so it's an easy add for Apple. Bring it on!

Now this is why I could see needing a rear facing camera... I could develop an app that shows a view from the rear facing camera up in the corner of the screen so that I can easily see what/who I'm about to run in to while I'm walking and reading...

...or while driving.

Facetime requires two cameras.

If this is the "killer feature" of iPad 2, I'm happy I got iPad 1. I already have an iphone, and while using Facetime is cool, my arm gets a little tired after about 5 minutes of holding it there. I can't imagine how long I could last holding an iPad out there.

Table, desk, lap...why would you hold your arm out?

That's just not enough to get me to update my beloved iPad!
I don't really have any use for camera(s) on a device that large. The possibility of better resolution might be tempting though. I would have to see what other updates comes with the newer edition. I might just wait for iPad3 though if it's just cameras and resolution. Here's hoping for more.

So, Reuters read two reports on MacRumors, contacted all the original sources conveniently contained within, got 3 responses of any note, and wrote a news item. MacRumors then picked up the news item which contained one (1) additional confirmation not contained in the original MacRumors articles.

Sound about right?

Rocketman

I was thinking the same thing! It feels like they're citing each other.

I dont know why you guys are against the ipad having rear camera. I kindof want it because if im posting things on ebay or craigslist i cant just take pics of it with ipad and not have to send them by email or any other way.

There are plenty of uses for a rear facing camera. Business, reference photos, eBay app, barcode scanning, etc.....it's not just about personal pics.

Exactly, there's all the business card and document scanner apps that you could use as well.

LOL @ the early adopters

All my friends, and all the mindless hordes freaking out, frantically logging on the the apple store, lining up in the street, for the 1st gen apple this that or the other, made me laugh. When the first one came out, without a camera, I had that sinking feeling in my stomach: "apple, you bunch of stinking whores, you are exploiting your fans yet again. You will release the next generation with cameras, and all these suckers will go out and buy it again." And lo and behold, as with all apple products, it has come to pass. Similarly, I didn't buy the first iphone because it didn't allow mms (even though it was perfectly capable of it) which I thought was particularly disgusting of them. I wonder, how do all you guys feel about being exploited like this?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Higher-quality display, maybe. Higher res? Seems unlikely to me due to cost.

The rear camera does seem silly (but harmless) if true, until people brought up AR! Makes me want to pay for a 3G version (and never activate it) just to get the GPS and magnetometer!
