Could this be related to the quality of the iPhone 5 people have been experiencing?

Was there a fallout for not having the quality control expected?

Are you ****ing kidding?
Atrocious.

On the other hand, this is China who is very controlling over what info comes out and I wouldn't trust them to tell us the truth even if it was the truth!

Or in other words, he may say that, but that doesn't necessarily mean that is actually what happened. China is very big on censorship and making sure people only see what they want them to see.

This is true, but better to base things on what is being reported than pure assumptions. And I'm not claiming that the reports are true, I'm just saying that waiting a few hours to see what all the various sources say might be better than jumping to immediate conclusions.

Move these jobs back to the U.S., there are plenty of unemployed people who would gladly take the job for minimum wage. Yes, it would cut slightly into Apple's profits, but the positive P.R. would be enormas.

Not sure how this question could be considered trolling....

I understand the situation at Foxconn and the working conditions/pay they receive.

My point is maybe someone (management) cracked down on them for the quality of the i5, and the workers were fed up with it. Straw that broke the camels back kind of thing.

Maybe Apple should use some of it's $100bn to PAY IT'S GODDAMN WORKERS.

These are NOT Apple's workers. These are Foxconn workers that build Apple, Microsoft, Dell, HP, and a dozen other major brand name devices. Foxconn along with probably a dozen companies BID for the work that Apple and the rest of the industry puts out for bid. Foxconn along with everyone else bids the work CHEAP to get it.

I have no idea where you may live sir, but in America I 100% support CAPITOLISM, I don't support SOCIALISTIC BS to spread the wealth to anyone that doesn't make what I or anyone makes. Apple operates on free market and companies BID to EARN that contract for work. The only reason Apple takes all the blame is because it's successful and I guess people will always take the side of the underdog. Even though the underdog put itself in that situation.

I have heard it cost an additional $65 to produce it in America, I can't verify that of course.

But stupidity and slavery doesn't last forever. When people have nothing to lose riots and civil unrest will occur. Apple has over 100 billion in cash , stop being greedy and bring jobs home.

Actually - they could have omitted it from the headline and put it in the body of the story. The reason the story appears at all on this site is understood by those visiting.

I'm not criticizing the decision - just stating there are options on how the information is presented

What are you talking about?

Does MacRumors or any other tech site put news items about riots and other unrest. No of course not. What about house break-ins. No, they are not mentioned either. It was only because it was Steve's home that it was a story. That is for general news site.

It's only the connection with the iPhone that makes it of any interest here. If you want to read why the guards were beating the staff then go somewhere else. I am not justifying it, I am concerned too, but this is not the place.

Come on, what do you really expect MacRumors to post?

Amazing ppl are being beaten and some can worry about is a shortage of iphones.

Maybe the plant being shutdown for a long time would serve Apple well for doing this overseas, skip iphone 5 and go to 5US (built in the USA)

So if you start paying a fair wage and treating workers fairly turns it into socialism?

Then will you buy an iPhone or iPad that sells 6 times of the current price?

The reality with iPhones is even if the production cost doubled on them yet prices remained the same, they'd still give Apple an obscene profit margin of what, I think 20% even after R&D and marketing?

$230 to make. Sells for $850. Awesome.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but demanding in free speech and the free market Apple bring jobs here and pay people better is capitalism at its finest. Shouting down free speech and demanding production for the benefit of some sort of bureaucracy which controls the political process with limited liabilities? That's pretty darned communist when you think about it. You don't support capitalism and bargaining, do you.

I guess they [the laborers] just weren't making them fast enough.

But in all seriousness. This is why Apple cannot solely rely on a single manufacturer to produce their product. It is time to bring the manufacturing of products back in the USA.

I would think being the most valuable company in the world would give them the leverage to clean up foxconn.

And hundreds of thousands of poeple line up to get these jobs at FOXCONN.

because they have no option, that doesn't make it correct. Sorry but "less bad" isn't good.

Most companies can pay way less and not have benefits that why we have labor laws in America like minimun wage to defend the average worker.

"OMG i'm not gonna get my iPhone 5 on time, how will i survive? screw those chinese people right? why not bring in the women, elderly, sick and children so i can get my iPhone!" #sarcasm

... some people

Anyone who owns an Apple product is a complete hypocrite if you try and act like you give 2 poops about the working conditions over there. If you truly did, you would not buy an Apple product.

I'd say it's better to wait and see if more info comes out. Of course if the only thing that comes out is what the "officials" say, than that's all we have to go on. But to me that would say almost nothing on what caused it. China has no qualms about outright lieing and covering up stuff so their word (The government officials) means almost nothing.

Do you have anything to support this assertion? Do you think there are no minimum wage jobs currently open in the US? I strongly doubt that most of the unemployed are willing to take minimum wage jobs. Unless the job they lost was minimum wage. Do you really think someone who was making $12 an hour and is collecting unemployment is going to take a minimum wage job doing repetitive labor?

Power to the People!

Some reports I've read suggest that the plant in question has a reputation for treating employees poorly (mandatory over-time etc.), and that the alleged assault on an employee by security staff was the final straw.

On the other hand, London has seen much bigger riots quite recently. Riots of similar scale have happened in China over football. Reports suggesting evil things happening in plants turn up all the time, but sometimes turn out to be fabricated by American "performance artists". And after a riot, of course all kinds of allegations will be happening.

But what happens of course is that after a riot, a desperate search starts to find out if any parts of Apple products were produced at that plant. And as luck will have it, backplates for iPhones are produced there! What a great coincidence, and how useful for headlines! Fortunately, no part of the iPhone production lines was damaged (and no part of any other production lines either, because this happened at a dormitory, no production line nearby), and now we can discuss whether iPhone production is threatened.

My point is maybe someone (management) cracked down on them for the quality of the i5, and the workers were fed up with it. Straw that broke the camels back kind of thing.

Maybe. Maybe one guy polishing iPhone 5 backcases got the girlfriend of another guy drilling holes for the headphones into Samsung cases pregnant, and they had an argument, and each one brought his friends to the argument, and then things got out of hand. You have no idea what actually happened, nor do I, and all you have is idle speculation.

It's all in relative.

Sure they make a fraction of what we make.

I'm sure an athlete that gets paid $10M+ per year wonders how we can get by making $30k...$50k....etc annually.

Then some Saudi prince would be wondering why that said athlete only has one mansion?

So because its an iphone you can ignore the human suffering ?

The FIRST focus HAS to be the iphone?

It just shows ho far people take this obsessions with this gadget .

Yes, but we live in a world with email, twitter and whatever else. I seriously doubt that even China can squelch all the unofficial sources of information. We will likely hear many sides to this and then I will feel more comfortable commenting on what I believe actually happened.

Well, are there American companies like a Foxconn that have the infrastructure to assemble 40-50M iPhones in a quarter? Apple doesn't actually build the factories and hire the workers. They outsource the work to Foxconn. Where is the Foxconn equivalent in US. Also, people are only comparing the wages of a single Chinese to an American. In terms of iPhone assembly, are American as efficient as the Chinese? Are they willing to put in as many hours? If not, there might be a need to construction MORE assembly lines to have the same production and THAT would increase cost greatly.

People love to say they would be willing to pay more for an American made product. Well, Mac were made in Cali when PCs were made in China, Taiwan. Which computers did Americans end up buying and why? PC because Macs were too expensive.
