I don't know how the law works in the UK, but in the US simply pointing a gun at someone qualifies as assault with a deadly weapon, without regard for whether the weapon is loaded.
It would be ludicrous to forbid police from shooting a suspect who is pointing a gun at them. On he other hand, based on the very fragmentary information I've read on the shooting of Duggan, it appears that he did not fire at officers and may not have even pointed his weapon at them. Still, if he was known to be armed, then he is immediately raising the likelihood that he or someone else will be shot in any confrontation.
It sounds like the police may have mishandled the incident with fatal results, but I don't see how these riots can be in any way be considered a legitimate or reasonable response. They are harming innocent people - not the police, not the Tory government, not the wealthy and powerful. It is self-destructive.
Great, now Manchester is kicking off. And unfortunately there is a limit to how many times you can call a group of people "idiots".
Im off to town now for a few drinks with a few mates. Selfridges is apparently on fire. Marks and Spencer is also smashed up too, Boots too i have heard.
Is it Selfridges or Miss Selfridges thats on fire?
Exactly. If he was stopped by regular cops, we'd be looking at 2 dead Police Officers and a cop killer and nobody would give a **** about that.

You are misinformed if you think that the murder of a Police Officer would go unnoticed. It is a pretty rare occurrence in the UK (15 unlawful deaths between 2000 - 2010) but when it does happen it receives widespread news coverage and unanimous condemnation.

Why couldn't they have a peaceful protest about this and leave it at that until the IPCC (who are brought in whenever a Police Firearm is fired!) finished their investigation? So selfish and disgusting.
No mass riots or looting though?
Of course you don't get rioting and looting when a Police Officer gets killed in the line of duty. Normal, law abiding people don't react like that.
These idiots aren't doing it because of that shooting, they are taking advantage of the situation to rob and destroy property. As the Birmingham Police chief said, the rioters were not an angry crowd, but a greedy crowd.

I hadnt realised that this isnt a regulation size bat, 60 CM or 24 inches is the size of bat you would have if you were a young child playing baseball and definately not adult sized. Its more the size of a rounders bat, perhaps slightly longer. I didnt however, buy this to play baseball with. As for the bat itself it feels solid and is reasonably light. The grip is easily big enough for an adult to hold the bat two handed.
Yeh Rich, what do/did you intend to use the bat for ?
Is it large enough to be used in a form of self defence to protect my family, say for example if I was to break down in my car in a dodgy area of france in the middle of the night and was approached by some bandits ?
BB-1 baseball bat in aluminium (Misc.)
I never go to Hackney or Salford, without it. It feels much more solid than a wooden bat, and makes a substantial impact when it hits a ball or bone-like structure. I store it under my bed, for easy access.
Either size is fine

I can see Selfridges from my balcony. It's looking fairly calm at this end of town at the moment, but I don't know if that will last.
There is a constant stream of sirens and the helicopter has been overhead since before I got home from work at about 6:00.
All calm and quiet here for now, I just hope it stays that way and they manage to bring the rest of the city under control!
