I had gone through 3 with yellow on the 1/3 part of the screen towards the home button. Two from best buy and one online from apple.com.

The one I have now is the best of them but it still has it. Going to wait a while before trying again. These were all space grey 32GB wifi models.

I got a DLXL rMini from an in store pick up, pretty noticeable yellow bottom half of screen. Then I received my second rMini in the mail (ordered on launch day) also a DLXL. But this second one is great. I compared them both side by side, and the one with the yellow bottom was actually much warmer all over the screen compared to the good one. Very noticeable when viewing them side by side.

So the serial numbers won't predict how your screen turns out. I'm thinking there is a range of acceptability that had to be set to meet yield requirements, and the "bad" mini I had was simply on the lower end of that spectrum.

I'm just happy my second one looks good, now i don't have to worry about it.

My retina mini also has the yellow towards the home button. Serial number starts with DLXL. It's not really that bad, it's more like the screen is warmer towards the home button. It's noticeable but not to the point where the screen looks like garbage at the bottom or anything. The store I bought mine from is out of stock so I can't exchange for a while. I have until Jan. 7th for returns so I'll wait a bit and see what happens.

Slightly off topic, my display has the "gamut" issue where it looks less saturated than my 5S and my retina MacBook Pro. Is that an issue with all the retina minis or are some of them better?

OMGWTFPPL.

STOP yammering about serial numbers and screen colors! The serial codes do not equal the panel manufacturers. Repeat. There is no correlation between serial codes and screen manufacturer. There are good and bad screens from EVERY factory, and the codes are about the date and location of the production, NOT the panel maker.

It's been said here 1000 times. And it's been proven 10000 times. One guy's STFUXL ipad is great while another's is plaid.

FORGET WHAT YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT SERIALS BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW SQUAT.

Gamut is not an issue. It just that it's different from the Air and iPhones.

rMini is the same gamut as iPad 2 and the original mini. So will they get better? Not with this generation.

I don't really care about gamut, i'd only like to have a plain uniform white screen.
Do you have any idea of what that could be ?

I'm the same. Would like the wider colour spectrum like the Air but wouldn't hold back from buying one just because of it. I'm coming from an iPad 2 so it's going to be a pretty big upgrade. The uneven screen though is really surprising and I think embarrassing for Apple. My 55 year old mom who wasn't wearing her reading glasses and who has astigmatism in her eyes even noticed the bottom 1/4 yellow tint. Would she have noticed if I didn't bring it up? Probably not, but she doesn't buy electronics, she doesn't know what to look for. She fully agreed at their price points it's totally unacceptable to have the main feature of your device (the screen) not be working properly.

I think it's bad manufacturing or cheap parts.

I can confirm. Compared in store the gamut of an iPad 2, iPad Mini 1 and Retina iPad Mini and they all had the same gamut, slightly washed out compared to the Air which looks like on a totally different level, really pops. Look out for the following icons: iMessage, iTunes, App Store and the music app.

In my opinion, I wouldn't let it hold you back from the device unless you're using it professionally for work and it affects your performance. Put it this way, if you're coming from an iPad 2 or Mini 1 you're getting the same colour spectrum. Don't know about iPad 3/4 though. They don't have those in the Apple stores anymore.

This.

The correlation between serial numbers and display quality is no more real than the "give the glue time to cure" theory.

Pretty much confirmed based on these two charts:

I don't mind the gamut.....I just want an even whiteish display.

Is the problem because it is yellow at the bottom or because it is blue at the top?

I think a lot of people would agree, we're not that picky about which tone we like more, warm vs. cool. We just want a uniform, even screen which the new rMini's are having a problem with.

Like I said before, my 55 year old mom not wearing her reading glasses and who has astigmatism could notice the yellow… that's pretty bad.

For me it's the unevenness of the screen. Warm or cool I don't care, but be consistent across the entire screen..

Btw this issue is also on the Airs. I returned 2 because of yellow tint on the left.

I have two rMini's now. One has no image retention but has a slight yellow tint on the left.

The other I just returned had the yellow on the lower bottom of the screen. It's replacement has the image retention but the screen is finally even and much cooler.

Looked at 9 retina minis on display at my Apple store and all had the issue. At the same time all were DLXL models.

 I bought a rMini at Best Buy yesterday and when I got home with it I had a dual colored screen! About two inches from the bottom was all yellow and it jumped right out at me the moment I turned it on! I tried using it on bright for a few hours but it never changed. I returned it for another this morning and held my breath as I turned the replacement on. This one is PERFECT :D. I now have an iPad Air 32 LTE and rMini 32 with perfect screens.

My point here is all those messages I read here on MacRumors about people receiving faulty screens and members sorta dismissing it as being OCD? The defective screens are real and the people reporting them are reporting some pretty harsh defects.

I have purchased way too many iPads over the years, this is the first time I received one that was truly defective. I am now a believer, Apple needs better quality control. These devices are way too expensive to accept anything less then perfect. Make sure before you leave the Apple store or Best Buy yours is not defective!

This is exactly how mine is! :(

I even opened it in the store to make sure there wasn't any issues, but as soon as I saw the perfect white of the calendar icon, I automatically figured I had gotten a good screen. It wasn't until I got home that I immediately noticed that the icons in the dock looked noticeably warmer and more yellow than the rest of the display. That's when I realized that I had an unevenly tinted screen. Honestly, I never really knew screen uniformity was an issue so I didn't think to check for it initially. I thought Apple screens came in two flavors: predominantly warm (more yellow) and predominatly cool (more blue), not BOTH!

So now I'm debating whether or not to play the Apple lottery and try and exchange it. The uneven tinting is subtle but certainty present and mostly distracting/annoying. At the end of the day, it's just BS that we have to deal with theses issues in a premium $400 tablet. Also, did your original device exhibit light leakage in the bottom corners near the home button? Mine does. It's most apparent when watching things on Netflix. But it's another reason making me want to exchange.

Mine is getting returned/exchanged today. Can't decide if I want to wait and/or possibly upgrade to a 32GB model.

Yup...that's what mine looked like. Unacceptable to me.

My new one is a 32GB Silver and it's great.

My other one is also a 32GB Silver and it has a very light yellow tint but this is on the left side, not the bottom/top. I see it, but my wife and kids don't notice it and it's their rMini.....so I'm keeping it. Don't need to exchange just to get one that's worse.

Yea I wouldn't mind it if the whole screen was uniform, but the difference from top and bottom of the screen is too much. Looks like I won't be getting another for a little while since my local Best buy is out of stock. Might just wait until I go home for break (at college right now) and buy one at the apple store so that if there are more issues I can get a no hassle replacement (they wouldn't replace my first rMBP since I bought it at best buy and only offered to replace the screen. so I had to exchange it at best buy and seeing that they're in the habit of banning people from returns isn't very appealing).

I've found BestBuy to be better when dealing with exchanges as opposed to a flat out return and re-purchase. I had to take 2 Air's back and they didn't give me any issues because I was just exchanging for something else.
