I'd recommend also to stop visiting this forum for a while too. Then you'll definitely forget about it.

It does make you wonder if people never visit this forum, never know how to test and what to look for, if they'd never even notice it. LOL.

Absolutely there are people like that. However, there are also people like me that turn it on and instantly see the yellow tint.

On my returned rMini, I couldn't read these forums in landscape view because the yellow tint on the right side was so distracting.

I got the mini on launch day as soon as the store had it....so I hadn't been to the forums yet (plus they were down that day).

in portrait on the air the left tint is instantly noticeable and if you flip it so the safari tabs are on the left its very noticeable. The gradient test posted in the rMini thread is also quite revealing

exactly the same case for me.
I quickly discovered the yellow tint at first usage.
It is very distracting when browsing or using white background apps. Obviously when playing games, it's absolutely not noticeable. Bad luck for me, apps with white backgrounds represent 80% of my current usage with an iPad.

I had even been able to notice if there was a problem during hello first boot screen at the store (check with an store guy who was seeing the default as well).
I've experienced 3 rMinis. First one even worst than others, I kept the second and refuse to exchange it for another one in store once we started up. (it was a "buy a new one to test and refund the worst" operation)

I think it will be exchanging it later, for next production batch, or perhaps sooner if I decide to go for Wifi+LTE model before, and that model is massively available in stores (just to be able to test and discard bad units when buying).

Experienced my 3rd iPad Mini today. All three have had the yellow tint on the bottom 1/3 (one was close to 1/2) of the screen to varying degrees. It bugs me to no end that I am so picky about LCDs. I've been a champion of IPS displays in general long before that was a common term. I've gotten better over the years (or maybe LCDs have just gotten better!), but I honestly wish I didn't notice these things.

So just to add some more data points, here are my experiences so far:

1st rMini: Picked up in-store on the first day they were available. As soon as I powered it up, I immediately noticed something unpleasant about the screen (the sharpness was obviously great though). Happened to have my old Mini right beside me and it immediately became apparent what it was once I placed them side by side. The display was significantly warmer all over, and the bottom third of the screen was extremely warm and dingy looking.

2nd rMini: I had ordered a rMini online much earlier that same day, and when this one arrived I figured I'd just as well take a look and return the one that was the worst of the two. Initial impressions on this one were that it was great--a huge improvement over the first one. Ironically enough, the new iBooks app is what did me in on this one. As soon as I spent a bit of time reading a book here, it became obvious I still had some yellowing going on at the bottom. Screen was mostly bright white, but it undeniably has just a hint of yellow/warmness at the bottom.

3rd rMini: With an Apple Store so close and having just gotten my credit for the first rMini, I figured what the heck, let's try one more. This one was the worst of the lot. Easily as bad as first, probably worse. The yellow area took up almost half the screen. This one is going back on the way home this afternoon. Sitting my 2nd rMini next to this one makes the 2nd one look fantastic in comparison!

I guess I'm going to sit on this 2nd one for a while and try one more after the holidays. It really is super frustrating though, I really don't understand why this seems to be such an issue.

FWIW, all three of these had serial numbers that started with DLXL. I personally agree with others that it has no bearing on panel manufacturer, but for the sake of completeness, there you go. I'm actually not even convinced there even are multiple panel manufacturers in the mix at this point.

It bugs me to no end that I am so picky about LCDs.

It's a curse because it's so subjective. I went to the Apple store today and brought my rMini for comparison. I left thinking my rMini was the worst one in the bunch although it's hard to tell because they have the brightness cranked to 100%.

So at this point do you guys just recommend trying to exchange after the holidays, once the initial stock has hopefully been depleted? How long do we have to exchange? Fourteen days from receipt or any time within the one year warranty? Also, if I purchased my rMini at an Apple store, could I iniate a return/exchange by having Apple send me a prepaid box and then just mail it back to them?

My retina iPad also has some color discoloration. The yellow at the bottom that people describe is there, but it's very faint. What seems more noticeable to me is a reddening around the top third of the screen. My rMini serial starts with DLXL.

I'm on the fence about returning it. On one hand, it hurts resale value if I decide to upgrade soon, and it's something that I'll have to live with for a long time if I decide against a near-future upgrade. On the other hand, it's only noticeable when much of the screen is white, and even then I don't find it too distracting. More importantly, I've seen far worse screens in some of the photo examples that people are posting. I'd hate to exchange this iPad only to get one with a worse screen, and then have to keep doing more exchanges.

If you can float the cost of an additional rMini on a credit card, even just temporarily, you could compare iPads and return the inferior one. That's what I've been doing up to this point. I had my full refund on my card in only two days.

EDIT:
I'll also add that Apple does seem much more lenient now about returns. Both times they never even asked why I was returning it. Walked right in the store and right back out--the whole process took less than five minutes. So props to them for their no questions asked return policy.

So you'll just take any piece of crap Apple sells?

-Kevin

I returned my rMini to Best Buy and purchased a new one at my local Apple store which just got in a fresh shipment. I had to go with black even though I prefer white because that was the only color they had in stock (no biggie). I'm happy to report my new unit has a much improved screen. Overall the screen has a much more uniform appearance. To my untrained eye the whites look a little bit warmer. Like my previous one it has a some IR but nothing I notice during normal use. Everything else looks good so hopefully I can just get down to enjoying it.

I also hoped I wouldn't face the same problem but the bottom of my screen especially on a white background is kinda yellowish. Retina Mini. Blah I'm not letting it bother me too much though. What bugs me is the constant safari crashing and respringing. I may have to take mine back for a replacement.

the air, rMini, and 5s seem to do that a lot, A7 is the thing they share, hopefully this is just a software issue though.

Why do retina displays in Apple products frequently suffer from subtle yellow tinting? I don't understand how this issue still has not been worked out.

Also, for those of you that have the uneven tinting do you also have light leakage in the same areas? I have both of these issues on my display, which are persuading me to exchange/return. And do I have to take my original device back to the Apple store or can I have Apple send me a prepaid box and then just ship it back to them?

I purchased 3 Rmini's. 2 slate/black 1 silver/white. Compared all 3 screens at the same time. The white ipad had no yellowing and perfect. Both slate had 1/3 yellowing at the bottom. So I returned the two slate back to Apple and they noticed it right away as well. I guess some people will have to purchase multiple units to find the best screen. Kinda sad... On a positive note, I'm loving it so far. No issues with the one I have screen is fantastic. Cheers

Wow, I just read through all these screen issues from this topic, and out of curiosity I ran the test and compared it with my iPad air and iPhone 5s they seems to all have the warmer colors and the iPhone 5s is the worst. But I hardly notices them on daily usage. I think I'm just going to keep them like that, not a very big issue for me if I do later I will just have them replace them under AppleCare+ warranty. Beside I have bad experience to exchange it because of a small problem, and it end up getting a worse unit and my last one. Good luck with you guys finding a good unit:)

I got my rmini in an Apple store on the day after launch. I checked it over in store and it looked fine even though I was looking specifically for the yellowing. At home at lower brightnesses I finally noticed it - mostly with the keyboard up or in the settings page but it was very slight and I was happy enough to keep it. Last Friday my online order showed up so I was planning on just returning it but I opened it to compare out of curiosity, The screen is perfectly uniform and I also noticed that the whites were a little brighter. Not massively but it made the original look slightly yellow in colour all over in comparison. Needless to say I kept the online order and returned the store bought one.
I'm not sure if this means all new order direct from the factory is likely to have a better screen but it was certainly encouraging.
I'm actually very impressed with the mini screen. It doesn't appear as saturated as the Air screen but I find it more natural to the eye as a result.

Sorry you're not allowed to be impressed. You can say you're not disappointed but impressed is specifically against the rules.

:p

You're right, I do apologise for my very poor Macrumours etiquette. So this pocketable device with an amazing 2048x1536 resolution shoehorned into a 7.9" screen is nice and all but if you drag a diamond over the screen really hard I heard it may scratch! WTF Apple? :D

Any issues with the screen?

No dead pixels.
Pretty uniform.
Cooler white.
No yellow tint (returned one because of tint)

But it does have the image retention. Haven't noticed it so far in normal usage so I'm keeping it. Can't stand having an uneven screen with tint.
