Mark my words - Bell will require Bell Fibe TV + Internet in order for this to work. That means 90% of Quebecois will be excluded from the TV.

Not to mention data caps up the wazoo vs unlimited internet available from the likes of Acanac and Teksavvy (which Bell wishes it could kill).

I hope Apple has the guts to shove their internet plans where they belong and force Bell to keep access open to ALL users from ALL ISPs.

An onscreen keyboard controlled with hand gestures? I am very interested in seeing how Apple makes it work.

There is only one reason Apple will make the TV hardware. An unparalleled level of integration of hardware and software not available in the market that changes the whole user experience. This also is a whole new gaming platform to compete with Xbox Kinect in a very new and novel way. Imagine different types of ccd sensors such as infra-red as well as thermal in addition to the visible spectrum. Imagine the 3 dimensional imaging capabilities with a multi-imaging source. See the link for the Apple Patent that makes this all possible.

Thinking back when I had DirecTV and a DirecTV/Tivo set top box. They were very well integrated; very nice features; especially liked the fact that Tivo would record things that it thought you would like based on your ratings of other shows. Then DirecTV killed off the Tivo; big mistake on DirecTV's part. But, what made it great was the "Content" and "Tivo functionality" combined. No other set-top and/or TV has that integration.

Update: Just did a search for that old DirecTV/Tivo box. Looks like they brought it back. Maybe that got wind of the AppleTV and decided the partnership wasn't a bad deal after all.

Apple won't be able to force the Cable companies to do anything like they did with Cell phone carriers. Since Most cable Companies (here in the US) don't compete against each other so The cable company's will do what they want and won't do what apple wants and won't care. If This so called tv is real and they want to get a cable provider to go along then they have to get rid of the iTunes content on that tv.

Some of us are looking for a premium high quality picture that can be color calibrated as we are home theater enthusiasts. But perhaps Apple doesn't care about these people as they are a small segment of the market. If Apple doesn't have a set in the 60"-70", then I am not interested and more interested in a Sharp AQUOS 70" LED LCD based TV.

I think Rogers only offers cable and internet to people in Ontario? I've never heard of anyone in Western Canada using Rogers for anything but their cell phones.

Where are they going to put these things in Apple Stores? There is no room to move now.

Should just need one or two out on the floor for display/demo purposes (probably attached to a wall mount so would be above any other product tables) and keep the boxed units that people purchase back in storage, I don't think that's any issue. However I can't see anyone just walking out of the Apple store with a huge TV without a shopping cart, so I don't know, maybe some sort of delivery option needs to be done and they will ship from a warehouse somewhere else and the Apple stores won't stock them at all other than the demo units.

I doubt Rogers can competently test a light bulb let alone an iTV.
They have just released a new cable TV interface - replaced an old FUBAR with a new FUBAR.

They seem to compete up here as we have a few like Shaw, Telus and Bell as the big 3 who always have promotions to win new customers over. People never thought Apple could do what they did to the Cell world too, Apple has a HUGE following and this would bring a ton of new customers over.

Odd that you mention that. A month ago XBox was advertising Comcast/Xfinity coming soon and it was even on the XBox menu as coming soon. It has since disappeared. That combined with a preview of the new GUI for the Comcast menu sure had that Apple TV color scheme etc. to it.

My guess is ( if this rumor is true ) Apple already has signed contracts with the biggest Cable provider in the U.S.

More importantly, are we really going to be permanently stuck with the A4 720p AppleTV box because of this overpriced display Apple wants to shove down our throats?

I think the AppleTV is great as it is, with the exception of its lack of 1080p support. And I get the feeling they won't ever give it to us, because they want us to go buy their 1080p television set when it finally comes out in like October.

wallmount?

I am ready as well, can't wait!

I call "crap"

I think the odds of these companies -- in Canada -- having a prototype Apple TV is between null and zero. (There's nothing between them, because there's the same thing.)

Maybe...

Maybe Apple could buy one of these worthless companies with part of their $95 billion, and negotiate deals with the principles for a real, a la carte, interactive TV. I'd gladly replace the crap on cable with Live Broadcasts, movies (streamed, rented or bought), and then buy shows I like and make my own schedule, like the network geniuses who have idiotic shows endlessly repeating, tiers of worthless channels you have to get to buy to get a good show or three. God, we're getting crucified by these greedy little midgets. They're not only ruining TV, they're screwing up the country.

I think you're looking for the wrong thing. Apple TV disintermediates broadcasters, networks and so on. A double-density screen? How about the ability to do 2K or 4K? They can do okay. Hey, here's another thought: modular. If you want to have a 70" screen, have one -- but the guts are in the Apple TV.

Great! Another iDevice to partner with my local draconian cable/telecom provider...

If this is Apple's idea of revolutionizing the TV industry (Partnering with service providers instead of studios directly,) count me out.

I can see it now: Terms start out acceptable, then slowly deteriorate to the point I'm pulling my hair out. Much like my "unlimited data" iPhone on AT&T:

2008: Unlimited data for everyone, yay!
2009: Oooh look we have tiered plans now! Don't worry...
2010: Sorry, no more unlimited data for newbies, (but you can keep yours!)
2011: Throttle this, b****!

Give me BT support and I'm potentially sold.

BT controllers, app store, BT keyboard, BT mouse... now we're talking. If they don't gimp the functionality of an all-in-one home entertainment system then it could be quite nice. On the other hand if they cripple it through a lack of apps, processing power, and/or interface, it won't be such a hot sell-- especially for the price (which we know will be high).

So Apple is going to release a product that will work only with certain cable providers while leaving the rest of the population out?
This is not a believable rumor.
