What a ripoff...

This is terrible. All we need now is Bell and Telus to come out with the Samsung Instinct phone with and ulimited data plan to shake things up. No wonder the canadian economy is going well...

Rogers should add a second table under their rates table:

Assuming a 755Kbit/sec* 3G speed:

With the 400MB $60 data plan, you can reach your monthly limit in 1 hour and 11 minutes. (1.18h)
With the 750MB $75 data plan, you can reach your monthly limit in 2 hours and 12 minutes. (2.20h)
With the 1GB $100 data plan, you can reach your monthly limit in 2 hours and 56 minutes. (2.94h)
With the 2GB $115 data plan, you can reach your monthly limit in 5 hours and 53 minutes. (5.89h)

At same speeds, the first extra hour of browsing will cost you $38.37.
Hours after first one will cost you $10.20.

I realize that these numbers are for constant usage and you probably wouldn't be constantly downloading stuff on your iPhone but I still thinks it's fair game as service providers are always so quick to post theoretical speed limits when they advertise their services. (Note that I didn't use theoretical top speed for 3G but tested average)

*Calculation made assuming that Rogers will have similar 3G speeds than AT&T's tested speed. (755Kbit/sec average, as tested by Computerworld, May 15 2008)

755Kbit/sec =
0.094375 megabyte (MB) per second =
339.75 MB per hour.

Are my maths right? I often confuse bits and bytes.

So guys, what's the cancellation penalty if i wanna cancel this 3 year rape plan right away ? I need to see whether it's cheaper to do the same trick in the states as i have a few friends there that can hook me up.

Adi

Yea .. I will go with the cheaper plan too. However, I can't believe that Rogers is gonna nickel-and-dime us by not including Caller ID GEEZ!!!

Cheers,
:):apple:

I hope you remember, that any carrier in Canada charges for Call Display. When I first found this out, I was shocked, because this is the only place in the world that I know where this happens. The exception is if you're on any sort of prepaid service, then I believe you get Call Display free.

no. you have NO OPTION for that

Typical Rogers. Take out CallerID and evenings starting at 6pm which anyone in a 1st world country needs and put it into a $20 value plan ... and never forget the $6.95 system access fee.

Evenings used to start at 6pm, then they moved to 8pm, but 9pm!!!, who cares?

Notice how they also boosted the weekday minute rate to $0.35/min, wasn't it about $0.20 before?

Gotta give the accountants credit for creative pricing.
Fido used to have overage charges for daytime minutes at $0.10 and LD was also $0.10. Once Rogers took over everything doubled and tripled.

So the cheapest plan (with freekin' Caller ID) is gonna be $60 + $15 Caller ID + $6.95 System Access Fee + $10.65 tax = $92.60 !!:eek:

Holly Crap!!!!

Call Display does not cost $15, it costs $6 or $7, by itself.

A 'value pack' of services costs $15. You do not have to purchase the value pack to get caller id.

The $20 'value pack' actually looks like it provides a lot of value, including caller id, voicemail, and a bunch of other stuff.

Except for people who have caller id, voicemail, and a whole bunch of other services already included in their corporate plans.

Fingers crossed for Rogers to have corporate plans for the iPhone. But breath not held.

wicked. i posted it on the facebook group related to this subject. i think this event is a good catalyst to stop all the ridiculous business practices of rogers and bell. **** these guys up. i mean, we don't let people do this **** to our hockey, right?

Meanwhile, the facebook group appears to have been started by.... the person who stared the $30/$45 unlimited rumours that were so horribly incorrect.

Unfortunately, yes... like the dinosaurs, they are slow to change. But we're now in the 21st century, in a world with telemarketing and stalking. Call Display should be a mandatory item, like 911 support.

Who would write to a gmail address to complain about Rogers? 100% not helpful.

I got a response

Dear Rogers Customer

Rogers and Apple are working together to provide the best plans available for the end user. The plans which were released today are yet to be finalized one hundred percent. The plans could change slightly or allot depending on customer response to the data or voice. Please feel free to submit ideas to this email and pass the the word along that way we can better fit the customers.

Thank You for the Response

Thank you for posting this. It should be added to the article on the front page of MR so it doesn't get buried. Everyone should see how these numbers really break down.

Here's a question - how much is exactly 400 MB of data in practical terms? Can I see how much "data" I use on my iMac? How much data do people use on average on their cell phones?

Right now I have no caller ID. Every time someone calls, it's like a surprise!

we can make it a game here in canada. everytime someone calls, and you guess correct. you take a shot of choice liquor

I don't believe I have call display plan for my phone (1st gen iPhone on Rogers), but if someone calls who is in my address book, it shows their name (and pic if you have it)

Folks!

You know what this means? The iPhone 2.0 will flop in just about every country except the US, UK and a few other places.

It was meant to be the introduction of the year (22 countries, my ass), but instead will be known as THE FLOP (TM).

Stevie Boy will not be happy. Neither will AAPL shareholders be.

I would you guess you'd need at least call display to get that. Not necessarily name display since it will look up the number in address book, but at least name display. If you get a call from someone not in your address book,d oes it display their number?
