Well this pretty much sucks.... badly. The wife and I don't currently own cell phones, just never cared for them, but we've been waiting for the iPhone since we've both been building small prototype apps for it and had some plans for rolling out some cool games.

Unfortunately there is no way I am paying for a plan without unlimited data... I wonder if there are others in the boat I'm in (i.e. Rogers would have had two brand new customers on a 3 year contract) or if really there aren't that many? Maybe they make enough ripping off all the existing guys that they don't care about new people?

Just read this article on cbc.ca

http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/06/27/iphone.html

At the end of the article...

...However, Rogers is not believed to have an exclusive deal with Apple so potentially, new carriers that enter the market and adopt the GSM standard in the future would also be compatible with the iPhone.

So, let's pray to the telcom gods that the wireless auction brings a new GSM competitor to the Canadian market.

I was sooooo close to getting an iPhone in July...sorry, no thanks Mr. Robber!

Like an earlier poster said...next gen iPod touch here I come!

I might just splurge on a MacBook Air considering all the money I'll save NOT chaining myself to one of Rogers ludicrous iPhone plans.

Hi,
This is just crazy, There should be laws against charging this crazy prices, I and my family will stick with my 1st iPhone, I was going to get 5 for us, but now we’ll just keep the old one, and I’ll buy the 3G iPhone on eBay or something, Rogers is not getting any more of my money.

It 2008, and every other company charges a flat fee for internet connection, why can’t Rogers do that for the iPhone?

I just wish someday soon, some other company will come up here with reasonable data/voice plans. coz I’m sick of Rogers. but for now, I’ll just keep my old iPhone.

Here are some sites where you can read what others say about the data plans,

Also if you would like to let Rogers know how you feel about the plan drop them a line at the email and website below, I and so many other have send them an email be one of us too.

I sent this letter to the Toronto Star and also to a Rogers Board Member

I and many other Canadians were hoping that with the release of iPhone 2.0, we would also see the birth or Rogers 2.0 As today's release of the pricing and plans by Rogers indicate, our hopes were in vain. Rogers fails to understand that the iPhone as well as other smart phones are webified to the extent that they are always connected,

The entry level plan with Caller ID, is $92.65/month and that's just with 150 voice minutes, nowhere near enough for even the most basic needs. Who talks less than 2.5 hours a month on their cellphone, or 5 minutes a day? Certainly, one would expect that an iPhone user would be fairly technologically immersed and would be using their communication device all the time.

Over the 3 years contract, this basic plan would cost the customer ($60 + $5.95 SAF) * 1.13 * 12 * 3 = $2682.85

Most consumers don't realize how quickly they will reach their limit and they could be facing an enormous charge at the end of the month since they have no way of knowing their usage during the billing period.

On the lower end, why would someone get a 3G iPhone if all they can use is 400MB of Data? Its like having a Ferrari but you can't afford the gas, and you can only drive around the block 3 times a month.

On the plan that I need since its the only phone I have, $153.28 X 12 = $1840 x 3 = $5521.82

I doubt that I will be upgrading. I am an early adapter, and many like myself have the first iPhone unlocked with no Data Plan.

Instead of ensuring that iPhone users can enjoy all that the iPhone can offer, and looking at a business model that will allow Rogers to gain substantial revenue from applications that it can sell or rent to customers, as Apple is doing, it stays with the old and useless paradigm.

Sometimes I wonder if the people who create these price plans for service providers actually talk to customers, or pay their own cell phone bill.

Fido is wholly owned by Rogers, so really, you aren't redirecting your business anywhere else (i.e., your money still goes to Rogers' pocket).

Besides, which part of Fido's plan is better than Rogers'? (Answer: none).

Correct answer: Per second billing, earlier start to evenings.

canada vs usa vs UK

iphone3gcosts21.png

We don't get free unlimited evening or weekend calls in the UK - you just get the 600 minutes (or whatever the plan comes with) which apply to any UK phone (mobile or landline) at any time of the day / week. Though we can get any of the following for an extra £7.50 per month:

- Unlimited texts
- Unlimited O2 to O2 calls
- Unlimited weekend calls
- Unlimited landline calls

I almost feel sorry for the phone companies in the UK and the rest of the EU. They face massive competition from other companies (we have 5 mobile networks covering the entire UK, then you have the TV companies getting in on the phone market as well) which helps keep prices down. Then they have the EU telling them to bring prices down of their own accord and if they don't they'll force them to. All good for the customers though, our iPhone packages appear to be the best (or one of the best) there is.

You got to feel bad for people in Canada - those plans suck big time.

It seems to me that by virtue of your contacts list in your address book, that you already have caller ID of a sort for free on the iPhone.

I'm not fully up on the iPhone features. Can you tell me... If you have someone in your iPhone contacts list and they call you, can you see who it is that's calling before answering? I'm the king of screen calling.

I'm lost that you have to buy the value package to get 911 calls.

Here in the UK, you do not even need a connected phone, or even a SIM in the phone to call the emergency services. If you have a phone and SIM, if your network cannot get reception, it will try one of the many others until it connects, even if you are on the move, it will select the strongest signal from any network and switch between them mid call.

No it works the same here. They put the charge on your account but you don't need an account or sim to get 911 service.

Maybe rogers likes crackberry since its Canadian.

Any .Mac Members out there?

I sent this to Apple just now via http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac/account/#form

My complaint is not about .Mac per se. It relates to MobileMe. I live in Canda and have been been waiting patiently for the iPhone to arrive.
Rogers today announced their data plan rates for the iPhone. I can tell you that because of the rates and lack of unlimited plan, I will not be purchasing an iPhone. As such, I may not even renew my .Mac (soon to be MobileMe) account because of this. So, it seems everyone loses out here.

Please, you must contact Rogers and urge them to review their pricing.

Thanks.

That can't be true, since Roger's iPhone data pricing is actually their BEST pricing for ANY device which--granted--is not saying much at all.

Their "best value" Blackberry plan is $90/month: you get 350 minutes and 25MB of data! Source: http://your.rogers.com/business/wir...WTETH6&plan=blackberryvoicenemail&cat=3&typ=2

Compared to what they offer for the Crackberry... this is a friggin bargain; not that it's a bargain at all.

Canadian government needs to have a word with Rogers and protect their citizens from this perpetual gouging
The Conservative Party had a war room full of lobbyists working the last election, including an individual representing the interests of Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications. These two companies donated significantly to get the Conservatives in to power. My guess is that the current Canadian federal government would have to be pressed pretty hard to step in to this ordeal.

One thing is for sure. Although I was looking forward to getting the IPhone I now will not.

There are three main strikes against it.

1) Only 150 minutes provided on the base plan
2) Evenings/weekends starting at 9PM
3) The need to pay an extra $15 or $20 to fix number 2 above and/or to get items such as caller ID.

I can live with the 400 MB of data, as I can live without using things like You Tube when I'm not on wifi. However I am still amazed that Rogers has the audacity to publish their usability statistics, as they would have been true 10 years ago, but must pages today are at least 2 or 3 MB in size, making their estimates completely unreasonable.

Unless they offer data plans that can be added to existing voice plans, there is absolutely no chance I will extend my contract that expires in a couple of months, and they have lost a customer.

Realistically, if you do casual web browsing and e-mail, with all the widgets running in the background, would you actually go over the 400?

Time to understand how business works.

Canada is larger than the US, yet, we got approx 30 million people. For a few million users (maybe less), a cell phone carrier has to build one of the world's largest network to offer the same kind of coverage and quality. Imagine the cost to revenue ratio.
Rogers 2007 revenue - $10,123,000,000
Rogers 2007 profit - $63,700,000

It's time for Rogers to understand how business works. Those are piss-poor gross profits.

It's ridiculous that Caller ID isn't included, but you don't have to pay $15 or $20 to get it. It's available by itself, for the ridiculous price of $6 or $7.

So, Caller ID not included; don't have to pay $15 or $20 to get it.
