I'm pretty sure there are typos in those quoted cancellation fees. IIRC, the normal rogers fees are 100 or 20 per month remaining in contract to a max of 400. The person typing put two ones to get 1100 and two twos to get 220. That's why it makes no sense the way it is worded.

Ya i definitely think the long contracts and bad plans are to lock ppl in when the competition arrives.. always have since i first read it was 3 yrs. If a US carrier is here in a year, it would be expensive to buy out of 2 yrs left with rogers.

When the competitions shows up and are trying to attract ppl with low profit margins, and expensive infrastructure investing, they (rogers) will have an army of ppl raked over the coals paying them 3x? the money for service.

I love that people are emailing/phoning/complaining in any way possible, but remember, as others have said, the most effective complaint affects Rogers' revenue. Personally, I was waiting for the iPhone to consolidate my cell, home phone, cable, and internet providers but will instead be using over the air HD and downloads for TV, Tekksavy for internet, Telus for cell, and Bell for home phone. I know it won't mean much to Rogers, but you gotta protest with your hard-earned money right?

Also, I know we're all frustrated and I don't want to get over-dramatic, but is this not a government concern? I mean, Rogers and other telcos are protected from foreign competition, and they're using that fact to obsoletely gouge canadian consumers?

No nickels and dimes here

Obvious typo...

here's the french version

(i) 100 $ ou (ii) 20 $ par nombre de mois restant à la période d’abonnement, jusqu’à un maximum de 400 $ (taxes exigibles en sus) et s’appliquent pour chaque ligne inscrite au compte annulé.

They are requiring an additional $15 add-on to receive Call Display.

That isn't actually true. I emailed a bunch of Rogers execs, and got a reply from some dude's Blackberry:

You can buy caller-line Id separaretly if you would like. The value pack offers best value to those that want all those services but you don't have to take it.
Hope you enjoy your iphone3G

You are 100% right. The ETF (or TLC in Telus-speak) will be a max of $400. Which I plan on paying right off the bat since I was prepared to spend $600-$700 on a 3G anyway.

I love how the response comes from a Blackberry.. where last i saw the web browser makes it seem like the internet is powered by Tandy's. 300 megs of data for a BB is probably like 6GB's on an iphone.

I Will be going on CBC radio "Day Break" Tomorrow morning at 7:30am to discuss the new Iphone and its absurd plans. I was contacted this morning by a rep who saw that i joined the group "ROGERS IPHONE PLANS ARE EVIL. MAKE A STATEMENT. DONT BUY ONE."

I read the cancelation fee as up to $400 per month remaining on the contract which is about $7700 (35 x $400) - assuming one cancels after one month.

If the most expensive plan is 115x36 = 4140, why would they charge you over 3500 more to cancel? Rogers have some ridiculous policies and i am in no way defending them, but it's obviously a typo as i explained a few posts above.

Might Rogers be blocking its customers from accessing ruinediphone.com?

I get the below message when I try to access the URL. Can others confirm? I've read that people on other ISPs are able to access ruinediphone.com.

wow, if that is the case, that is pretty sloppy for a corporation.

I highly doubt they would do that, but you never know I guess. ;) FWIW, it loads just fine for me as a non-Rogers customer. ;)

I just came back from talking on CJAD Montreal and told them for a good 3 minutes what I thought about Rogers! They were all shocked when I told them about the $1100 to $7920 cancellation fee! I was also able to get the last word on the topic telling Montreal no to but the iPhone!

Hope I helped!

And.... then you would have to use Rogers or Fido anyway since the iPhone is GSM. What exactly would you be saving?

So you deliberately lied to the media. Is this what your employer (Telus/Bell) is stooping to now? I hope your boss is prepared to cover your arse in court should Rogers decide to retaliate.

They were typos. Check the French version. The maximum is 400 bucks just like with other phones/plans.

BTW. How much of a bonus did you get for that exploit?

I can access the site. He wrote the following on his blog.
I got like 200 e-mails about this subject. I don’t think that Rogers is blocking our website. The fact that I’ve changed the DNS of the domain name is probably the true reason. The DNS need to propagate in all the servers around the world. It could take as long as 48 hours for this task to be done. Thank you for your patience and please, don’t start a petition against Rogers for this (haha).
Just keep trying and eventually you'll see the site back up.

Good job we need to get as many people informed as possible. In this day and age no corporation should be able to gouge at will its consumers.

I just submitted the following to the competition bureau complaints form:

Harsh and misleading pricing offered by Rogers/Fido on the Apple iPhone:

Rogers, our sole incumbent non-competitive GSM mobile telephone provider, is offering highway-robbery pricing on iPhone packages beginning at $60 + $6.95 + $0.50 per month for a mere 150 minutes of talk-time and 400 MB of IP traffic. They are requiring an additional $15 add-on to receive Call Display. Furthermore, a three-year contract will be enforced. Breaking this contract will incur a cost ranging from $1100 to $7920 -- unbelievably criminal.

Furthermore, Rogers's other brand "Fido" purports to offer similar rates.

Even worse, however, is the blatantly offensive and misleading "system access fee" (and "911 fee") which the company insists upon charging BEYOND its advertised monthly rate. This amounts to $7.45 which is unadvertised.

Despite Rogers's whim to advertise violently egregious pricing in our capitalist economy, such advertising MUST be accurate and non-misleading. The company's consistent and regular disregard for straightforwardness and honesty in this manner is most offensive: advertising a "$60/month" package which they charge at $67.45 should be illegal. I cannot understand how this practice continues. Make it stop.

I'm not sure but submitting false information to a government agency could get you in trouble. The maximum cancellation fee is 400 dollars. The English version had typos on it. Check the french version.

How about next time waiting a while before going off on a crusade with potentially incomplete information?

As a taxpayer, I'm not interested in seeing people waste the time of civil servants going on a wild goose chase.

From Elizabeth Hamilton (Rogers Spokeswoman - emphasis added):

"Thank you for your email. You asked why Rogers does not offer an unlimited data plan and the answer is that we believe it would charge our customers for more than they use. Customers have a wide range of iPhone 3G pricing that they can choose from - whether that be a high value iPhone 3G bundle as was announced on June 27, or from our existing voice and smartphone data plans in market today. The iPhone bundles and Value Packs are not mandatory, they are available, but if you would use other features, or certain applications, there are other choices available to you. I hope that this information is useful for you to assess your decision and make the choice that is best for you and what you need from a wireless device. Regards, Liz Hamilton"

Now - this doesn't necessarily make it better but it means you don't necessarily need a 3 year contract and can add the floating data plan from the blackberry selection (500-1GB per month from 50-100$) and tie it to a family plan voice and add early calling (5pm) and call display alone. makes it somewhat more palatable to increase the voice minutes...

This is what I'm paying with Telus...
$25/mo - 150 minutes, unlimited evening and weekends starting at 6
$15/mo - Unlimited e-mail and IM
$15/mo - Unlimited data (excluding streaming like YouTube, VoIP like Skype, tethering) so really i only end up using 100MB a month...
$15/mo - Call Display, Voice Mail, Unlimited text messages
=$87.02 including SAF, E911, GST & PST

This is what I would get with Rogers/Fido...
$60/mo - 150 minutes, unlimited evenings & weekends starting at 9 for Rogers, 7 for Fido, Voice mail, 400MB of unrestricted data, 300 text messages, Fido/Rogers Hotspot access (remember folks you can use this for your Mac as well!!)
$20/mo - Call display, 10,000 text messages, evenings extended to 6 for Rogers and 5 for Fido
=$98.78 including SAF, E911, GST+PST

I think the extra $11.76 is worth it for the iPhone.
