Rogers can go to hell in a handbasket - how to vote with your wallet

The iPhone is definitely cool, but voluntarily agreeing to be sodomized by Rogers for 3 years is stupid.

This is a balls-up mess - Apple, a great firm with admirable customer satisfaction, in bed with Rogers, one of the worst-run, most-hated large companies in the world.

Rogers knows it too, as observed by John Gruber at http://DaringFireball.net , quoting Rogers:

Rogers’ Exorbitant Early Cancellation Fees ★
This is usury:

An Early Cancellation Fee (EECF) applies if, for any reason, your service is terminated prior to the end of the service agreement. The ECF is the greater of (ii) $1100 or (iii) $220 per month remaining in the service agreement, to a maximum of 400 (plus applicable taxes), and applies on each line in the plan that is terminated.

Outrageous.

Hatred of Rogers is not new
http://iHateRogers.ca/

Here's a great plan - let your local Rogers corporate outlet know you're interested in an iPhone, and to contact you when they've got stock.

When you eventually get your invitation: go to the store, ask about the rates, tell the (unfortunate) employee, politely, that those rates are nonsense, and leave.

He was wrong. You posted wrong information.

Try again.

I spoke with a Fido rep a few weeks ago and at that time they didn't have the pricing--however, they did have the contract information. 3 years. And, get this: you cannot extend a current plan. So, for instance, I have a year left on my current plan and I would have to pay to terminate it and then get a new contract for the iPhone. The exception is if you have less than 6 mos remaining then they'll let you add onto your existing plan.

I said, "So, you think I'm going to pay to get out of a contract and then resign up with the same company that charging me extra to remain their customer? Why would I do that?" The guy didn't have an answer for me.

SMS goes over the voice service, not the data service. There are two seperate waves and antennas for each, so its not data like a webpage.

Really...? Can you cite a reference? That's news to me.

Regardless, if the overage per-minute rate is $0.35 and a text message costs $0.15, one might conclude that a text message is deemed to consume the same resources as a 26-second full-duplex voice conversation. Clearly not the case. Therefore, outrageous.

But if you want it to be you could always just send an e-mail or head to the rogers website to send a free text online, which in that case you'd only be charged the data. Of course all these things are annoying compared to actual text, but thats when it would be data in the normal sense. SMS is not.

Here's an idea. Why doesn't someone write an iPhone app that takes advantage of sending free text messages using the Rogers website? That way all the text messages will be sent over the data plan so they wouldn't be subject to the normal outrageous SMS rates. The only downside to this would be that it may not work as nicely as Apple's built in SMS app.

he's right. i worked tier 3 tech for Tmobile. (yes their tech support is based in canada). SMS uses regular voice system (which is still digital). data is a totally different thing.

Hey, I just got off the phone with a Rogers rep. regarding pricing options etc.. She told me that they are still getting frequent daily updates regarding the plans and options since they were released last Friday. We can add early evening options if we want ($9 to start at 5PM or $7 to start at 6PM) or do the $20 combo thing where you get your unlimited voice starting at 6PM plus the caller ID and Who called thing (which obviously shouldn't cost more but they gotta rip us off somehow). She also mentioned that My Five thing where you pay a bit more to choose 5 local friends you call frequently and don't pay for the minutes you use to talk to them. It still sucks, it still costs a fortune but they're tweaking things as we speak. They will definitely not budge on the data aspect of the plans.

Scientist says texting is 4x more expensive than receiving scientific data from space

That sounds like a cool idea.

:(

fantastic idea. BUT that would still require you to buy an iphone and get a ass rape contract from rogers.

yeah i know:( this sh** suks i live at mexico and they are also raping our asses here(although not as bad as canada) ..the prices start at 46 dlls with 200 minutes 100 sms and ONLY 100 mg! + the iphone cost (350 dlls 8gb ,460 dlls 16gb). im disapointed at the wwdc jobs said that the the maximum world wide price for the iphone would be 199 dlls.... that was some serious bullsh** .. come on stevee give us a break

150 min a month = 5 min talk time a day <------HAHAHAHHA
