i don't care about minutes, i want DATA! the iphone is useless if i'm constantly going "ohhhh how many more megabytes do i have this month? better not check the weather..."

100% agree.

I would only use 5 min a week. But, for people who use the phone as a phone (unlike myself), 150 minutes are a rip-off.

As for data, I think I would surpass 2Gb in a week or two. If there isn't unlimited data on July 11th, I think I'm to get a lot of over charges (unless I can control myself with this wonderful device!).

I'm jail breaking my phone Rogers. Kiss my ASS
Ooooh, that's a brilliant idea! Jailbreak your iPhone, and then run it on....oh wait. Rogers! They have the only GSM network in Canada. Yes, jailbreak it so you can give them your money anyway! That'll show 'em!

I can access the site. He wrote the following on his blog.

Quote:
I got like 200 e-mails about this subject. I don’t think that Rogers is blocking our website. The fact that I’ve changed the DNS of the domain name is probably the true reason. The DNS need to propagate in all the servers around the world. It could take as long as 48 hours for this task to be done. Thank you for your patience and please, don’t start a petition against Rogers for this (haha).

Just keep trying and eventually you'll see the site back up.
Thanks. That makes more sense.

LOL!... you are right but at least you can get a cheaper plan with your iphone...its not much but it is something lol.

So you deliberately lied to the media. Is this what your employer (Telus/Bell) is stooping to now? I hope your boss is prepared to cover your arse in court should Rogers decide to retaliate.

They were typos. Check the French version. The maximum is 400 bucks just like with other phones/plans.

BTW. How much of a bonus did you get for that exploit?

I'm not sure he lied. He was just reiterating what is stated on the Rogers (English) website.

I'm surprised that there are not just one, but three errors on the terms and conditions page. The lawyers and layers of management should have caught that - but now it's out.

They've got a PR mess on their hands.

Jesus Christ! I thought this was true! And Aristotle, I don't have any affiliation with any telecom network, so check the direction you point that finger of yours before you open your trap!

MacInTO! I never knew about this mistake! I thought it was legit!

Oh the hell with it. I am not going to blame my self for Rogers being ***'n stupid. At least this will stop people from buying the iPhone in a protest against Rogers!

Cheers and Happy Canada Day!

In a few months there will be access to jailbroken 3G iphones, and yes I must run it on Rogers, but I wont have a 3 year contract, **** I wont have any contract at all.

That sounds like a cool idea.

iPhone in Canada thread:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/5688306/
Thats funny. But it is true that for text messaging they use a pretty archaic form. I mean like that article shows its 140 bytes per text, at the 9kbps that you need for voice, thats 15 seconds worth of talking to send a text. So a price of a text should fairly be 1/4 that of a minute of calling. Which if we look at the $5 for 50 minutes and $6 for 125, its $.10 for a minute or $0.025 for 15 secs and its $0.048 for a text, so they charge double to send the same data. Now you'll call instead of texting eh? :p

But lets compare that to a wireless plan, so technically it costs them somewhere between 2.5 cents and 4.8 cents for 140 bytes, they're plan for pre-paid data charges you $15 per MB. So thats 1.5 cents for 1 kb or 0.21 cents for 140 bytes aka a text.

4.8 cents to send a text
2.5 cents to make a call using equivalent data
0.21 cents to send a text over the data lines

Less than one-tenth the cost for sending data using data lines instead of voice. At the bare minimum. Interesting. So clearly its a lot cheaper to use the data lines, hell what I don't understand is why they don't just move to VOIP too, so that you get charged 9kbps your on the phone and then just have a data cap. It would seem in Roger's advantage, they could slash their prices in half while increasing their profits 5x, and they would be the only one able to do it in Canada cause they have the GSM network. Plus it would be the most efficient way to send data, be it voice, text, or internet, around. Makes you wonder sometimes if the guys at the top really are that smart....

Thats been there since Day 1 and its the least they should do for signing up for a 3 yr-contract. I mean it doesn't change much cause its only for 3 months and you have to get a contract where you will not go over for 36 months, so in my mind its really useless. I like Fido much better, 50% off the first 3 months, that would be like $150 total for the plan I want. So yeah... everyone GO TO FIDO. Ten times better. Earlier nights, per-second billing, which is crucial for such a small plan already, and 50% off first 3 months, it basically pays for the iPhone. Not too shabby.

but how are you getting your iphone without a contract if now you cannot get out of a shop without having your iphone activated with a contract

I think those numbers that you stated on the radio will get a lot more attention than the $400 fine, so you did a great job.

for all of us who dreamed buying an iphone at the states and then jailbraking it :( welcome to sad reallity https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/496956/
"Now you cannot get out of a shop without having your iPhone activated, with a 2years contract. And even if you wanna cancel it go ahead, but fees"

You'll still be able to buy an iPhone in the USA without a contract. The catch - the iPhone costs $400 more and this 'no-contract' option won't be available right away. But once it does, expect a lot of very expensive iPhones to show up for sale.

well thanks for the info ....so i will just have to wait...more...

Let's just make this clear. The ECF was wrong in English. Rogers just got around to correcting it :

https://www.rogers.com/cms/html/iphone_vpterms.shtml

An Early Cancellation Fee (EECF) applies if, for any reason, your service is terminated prior to the end of the service agreement. The ECF is the greater of (ii) $100 or (iii) $20 per month remaining in the service agreement, to a maximum of $400 (plus applicable taxes), and applies on each line in the plan that is terminated.

Now while the plans offered still aren't ideal... or even good for some, I will give some credit to Rogers for updating the page and clearly stating the hidden fees. Here is some of the important info you should know :

-Visual Voicemail will not use either your minutes or your data if you use it through the included app. (Calling to check your messages - aka The Old Fashioned way - will cost you minutes) (EDIT : According to Rogers PR, Visual Voicemail will cost 8$/month if you choose not to get one of the iPhone plans. Thanks slicecom)

-The Value Packs are free for the first month.

-You have free access to Rogers and Fido Hotspots with the iPhone plans. (If this includes all Hotspots or only those controlled by Rogers/Fido would have to be cleared up)

-You get 3 months of free local calling with the iPhone plans.

-From https://www.rogers.com/cms/html/iphone_terms.shtml

Price Plan Downgrade Fee
If you have subscribed to an iPhone Voice & Data Package or a Voice Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of more than $30, then a Price Plan Downgrade Fee of $50 will be applied to your invoice if, for any reason, you change to a Price Plan with a Monthly Service Fee of $30 or less at any time during the Service Agreement Term. A Price Plan Downgrade Fee will not be charged if your service is terminated prior to the end of the Service Agreement Term, although you will be subject to any applicable early cancellation fee.

Data Usage
Your iPhone will be enabled for data usage. If you subscribe to a plan with no data included, data charges at a pay-per-use rate of 5¢/KB for data sent and/or received over the Rogers network will apply, unless you subscribe to a data plan, which we highly recommend.

-You can choose from other Rogers plans. The iPhone plans aren't the only ones that can be used with the iPhone.

...Which brings me to show you the Rogers Flex Plan. Your monthly cost changes between $50 and $100 according to your usage. You can get anything from 500MB to 5GB while paying $0.03 per MB if you go over.

Each month, the Rogers Flex Rate Plan automatically adjusts your Monthly Service Fee based on your actual data usage.
#
You will start each month at Tier 1 ($50 base Monthly Service Fee and up to 500 MB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 500 MB, then you move up automatically to Tier 2 ($65 Monthly Service Fee and up to 1 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 1 GB, then you move up automatically to Tier 3 ($75 Monthly Service Fee and up to 2 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 2 GB, then you move up automatically to Tier 4 ($85 Monthly Service Fee and up to 3 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 3 GB, then you move up automatically to Tier 5 ($100 Monthly Service Fee and up to 5 GB of data usage).
#
If your monthly usage exceeds 5 GB, then you pay only 3¢ per additional MB.

Yes, you're still getting screwed by Canadian cell companies. But look what happened : Rogers just got nudged. They changed their mind and added value to their offer less than a week after announcing the iPhone plans. There's still 10 days before you can even get an iPhone. Constant (non-zealous) pressure until then might make them become more flexible.

Maybe someone can add to this. Not sure of the accuracy...

I was in a Rogers retail store last week talking to the owner. Yeah, I think he said he was the owner of that franchise location. Is that true? Are Rogers retail stores franchises? He said that a group of stores in Ottawa have ordered 1500 iPhones for the July 11 release. He didn't know how many his store was getting yet. He said the largest order the Ottawa group had ordered before was 500 Blackberries.

If this is true, there are a lot of Rogers franchise owners hedging that the iPhone will sell really well. I'm wondering if we express our disappointment to the store owners, they may wield a lot of clout communicating their concerns to corporate. Just a thought.

Can anyone add to this, or correct me if I’m wrong?

Ummm, except they didn't. The iPhone-specific plans are the best value you are going to get and giving us one month of a free 'value pack' and 3 months of free calling over a 36-month term is nothing. If anything, it's a complete insult.

Maybe they weren't originally going to allow customers to use plans other than the iPhone-specific ones but I would hardly call that giving us something of value.

What they're trying to do is offer all these supposed 'bonuses' so that we all start to think that we are getting something of value when we really aren't. If people start to accept that we are now being offered valuable plans then the gouging will only continue.

That is exactly what is happening. They're giving us all these other options, which are actually more costly if you look at the cost per minute, or cost per MB, or cost per text message, etc. They're doing this so we can look at their so-called "high value" iPhone plans and make us think it's a great value...which it is not.

*A $6.95 monthly System Access Fee (non-government fee), a monthly 50¢ 911 Emergency Access Fee (non-government fee) and a one-time $35 Activation Fee apply in addition to the monthly service fee. Local airtime over the allotted monthly minutes in the plan, long distance and roaming charges, any additional service options selected and applicable taxes are extra and are also billed monthly.

Non Government <-----that means they don't need to charge this, it's just for their own pockets???

The "Flex rate plans" are interesting.. BUT the question is HOW? are they added or combined to the existing iphone plans. If its the iphone plan ("60$" ) + 50$ min for 500 megs data then thats useless. Thats 110$ for (400+500 =900 mb, the 100$ iphone plan gives you a gig.. (1024)

If you can remove the data component (about $40 by rogers math for 400 mb) from the 60$ plan..and swap it for teh flex then u could have have up to 5GB of data and 150 mins for 120$ and ofcourse pay less if u use less. vs.. the 2gig u get with the 115$ iphone plan. Though u get 800 mins in that but I don't need that. And you could get 2 gigs of data for 95$ not 115$

I guess your not saving much, or anything.. u are getting minutes in the iphone plans.. but again.. i want data not minutes.

I'm probably crazy to think things are that customizable.

Rogers caps are ludicrous if you consider the requirement for bandwidth that wasn't there before the app store was announced. Streaming video is really going to be a key feature of the new iPhone but users won't be able to take advantage of it. It's like were getting DDoSed out of reasonably priced and limited bandwidth... I wish Rogers could feel our pain.

Visual Voicemail will be an additional $8 per month if you want it without getting an iPhone plan.

Yeah, I should specify that. Where on the Rogers site do they say it's $8/month?

Using the iPhone plans given by Rogers is not necessary. You can build and choose your own from their other voice and data plans. That's where the flex plan comes in.
