I HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL BE AN APPLE FAN (and thought i currently use rogers) WITH THIS RIDICULOUS PRICES I WILL NOT BUY THE IPHONE!

This is news from supposedly an employee of Fido/Rogers on HoFo:

- Expectation to sell 8.5-9k phones in first 2 days (my own note: if Canada was to repeat the success of the US's first launch, they'd need to sell 30k phones)
- No employee purchases until further notice. No waitlists or rain cheques for customers.
- No promotions or incentives as per Apple. Employees cannot speak to the press.
- Limit 2 phones per customer
- HUP (hardware upgrade plans) can be done in store. Must be eligible for 3 year. Not HUP elgible = no iPhone. All standard upgrade rules apply including CityFido upgrade rules.
- "If we activate with iPhone plans, commissions rock! If we activate a regular plan and don't activate data, we get NO commission" For every iPhone that we sell w/o a data plan, we must explain to management why no data was attached in writing.
- No non-contract price
- No family or couple plans for the iPhone plans (you can use other plans).
- "There may be iPhone specific data add-on plans. I will have more info tomorrow."
- Fido dollars can ONLY be used when doing a renewal as well.

Take it for what it's worth...

Can someone verify that if I have a Rogers/Fido plan and I get call from Rogers/Fido network anytime of the day the call is free.

Cheers
Gary
I think this depends on your plan. I am almost certain that my plan does not have this. For the current plans, there is Fido to Fido for $25 which gives you unlimited calls between Fido subs. Fido to Fido Plus gives you unlimited calls between Fido and Rogers. Not sure if the Plus includes Rogers Home Phone subs.

WOW it really didnt sink in how bad of a deal Rogers was giving us until I explained to my wife that if we get an iphone on the cheapest plan, she can make 5 min calls before 9 pm, 5 days a week, and send 3 text messages out a month.

Guess what her reply was when I asked her if we should still get one.

So there you have it Ted Rogers made my wife angry, I should get something for that!!!!

I don't want to spoil anyone's good time here, but, aside from venting frustration, do you really think threads like this present a mature, professional picture of this website and list? You want maximum exposure to your protest, but do you really want the press reading these threads? What if they print your anal proclivities?

Just a thought.

I'd say it's about on par with Roger's price plan. Shame there's no competition in Canada.

This morning I spoke with my company's corporate sales rep at Rogers.

He said that right now, the whole iPhone launch is shrouded in secrecy the like of which he's never seen before at Rogers.

There is a company wide teleconference tomorrow morning from 9 to noon (PST) and only after that will they know what's going on.

He didn't know this morning whether they would have any phones for corporate customers, how many they might get, when they would be able to supply them, or anything else. He said that the only thing he did know was that Apple and Rogers had been playing 'very hard ball' with each other about the whole thing and that the announced data plan pricing was the only concrete information he had.

I mentioned to him that there was a lack of satisfaction with the whole launch and he said he was aware of that.

I'm booked to call him back tomorrow afternoon and will share what I learn after that call if it's anything significant. But it's probably not going to be anything that hasn't already been said here. I'm guilty of not reading the entirety of this thread I'm afraid.

Cheers.

I look forward to reading what transpired.

I just got off the phone with Rogers having spoken to a CSR named Anil (employee # 16726). I asked him:

• Can I carry my existing plan forward
• Will Visual Voice Mail work if I don't get an iPhone plan
• How much will it cost me to disable the 3G Data antenna.

He told me:

• Yes, I can carry forward my existing plan
• Wes, Visual VM will work. He seemed unsure of that, so I pressed him on it, telling him point blank: "You don;t seem very sure of that." He put me on hold and confiermed that "Voicemail will work". I said "No, dude...I said VISUAL voicemail." He put me on hold again for about 8 seconds and then told me he'd confirmed with his supervisor that VVM will work without an iPhone plan. I guess we'll see.
• This is a good thing: Data can be disabled at the source FOR FREE. You do NOT have to subscribe to a Rogers Data plan, nor do you have to pay a premium to have the feature disabled. If you live in the city, this is great news, as you can just pick up any OTA WiFi signal and use that.

So I then scaled back my rogers plan to a bare minimum...I was paying $47 for crap like My5, etc...Now I'm down to $31 for 100 mins, 1000 Eve/WE (that's a pretty skimpy number, but really, I never go over that amount), FREE Rogers to Rogers, Call Display, VM, and 75 txt messages.

FRACK the data plans, until they come up with a decent one.

How knowledgable the csr actually was remains to be seen.

How long have you been with Rogers? If it has been a few years, try calling their customer service line and press the button to be transfered to Cancellations. This will send you to the Retention department. Explain that you are only considering cancelling because of high cost and limited minutes. I called a couple weeks ago and got my daytime minutes bumped by 200 extra, retained all other features and price. You might be more successful, if you are better are conveying what you want, in order to stay. But, given that you just changed plans, they might give you nothing.

Having said that, your plan of disabling data and going voice only for now seems better and better to me. But, I will not be buying immediately. I will not help their launch number and following spin they will use it for. I will still hurt them by not getting a data plan, but will wait a little to do so.

This whole Data thing has been concerning me for quite some time now. I am not interested in getting a data plan and was worried that if I accidentally launched safari, youtube, mail, etc when not on WiFi I would be charged for it. Thanks for clearing this up for me. I'm assuming if it is disabled by them, it can also be turned back on should I decide to go with a Data Plan later on? I'll also assume that if this can be done for Rogers, Fido will do it too?

I have a question regarding the statement you made 'as you can just pick up any OTA WiFi signal and use that' what exactly is OTA WiFi. Is it the Rogers WiFi Hot Spots, or is it just normal home, office, school, etc WiFi network?

Anyone not getting a data plan will not be greeted with a friendly customer service rep, and may just lie to you and not sell you the phone. This is because they get NO commission selling an iPhone to you without data. Since that's the case, they might as well try and sell you a crappy 0-dollar phone since even those they will get commission for.

However, if I were you, I'd wouldn't care. If they don't get many data sign-ups, then they won't get much commission, and then they will complain to their employer (Rogers/Fido)...applying good pressure to Rogers. Then maybe they will lower their rates to drive adoption of data and to keep their CSRs happy (if they care).

OTA = Over The Air. There are lots and lots of free WiFi signals in the city if you look hard enough. I have a few friends with iPod Touches, and they never seem to have any trouble logging on to WiFi signals.

That said, many of those signals are peoples' private internet signals that they have failed to properly code/hide, so latching on to one of those signals may or may not be a little sketchy.

Beyond that, there's always NetZero.

I'm usually at home or at the University and both have WiFi signals, so I think I should be okay for connecting to the internet. There's always the 15 minute walk from home to school though, but I think I can manage :p

I'm not going to base my phone buying decision once I'm in the store on Rogers' inability to hire competent sales people who will serve the customer based on his/her needs.

That reason alone is why I go to Best Buy and not Future Shop.

That said

You might be right...if enough employees complain they're not getting paid, maybe Robbers will in fact do something about it. But I doubt it. Everyone in my local Rogers store looks pretty miserable all the time. Seems indicative of something more systemic than just a bad rate plan now and then.

Actually it sounds like Rogers gets hosed on costs whenever they sell an iPhone without data. A dealer on HOFO who was reporting about the commissions said that if anyone sells an iPhone without a data not only does the rep not get a commission, the rep MUST also write up an explanation for head office on why they let the customer out of the store without data.

Remember the last thing Apple wants is to let Rogers cannibalize their iPod Touch market. (Why would I buy an iPod Touch if I can get an iPhone cheaper by signing up for a cheap voice plan and limiting myself to Wifi and iPod functionality.) I don't know the terms of the contract between Apple and Rogers but it sounds like Rogers is really under a lot of pressure to push data. (They also promised investors that the iPhone would up the average monthly spend of their customers so if too many customers don't take data Rogers has failed with investors even if they sell a lot of iPhones.)

The fact that Apple is not going to be stocking Apple stores in Canada with iPhones is a huge slap in the face to Rogers. (True, Rogers has way more retail outlets than Apple and will do just fine without Apple pushing the iPhone, but Apple stores do have a certain cache and it's just more bad press for Rogers and will fuel more angry sentiments from customers given that even Apple is now openly angry with Rogers over the iPhone pricing in Canada.)
