no Rogers for u :p

Ive had no contract for 3 years waiting for the iPhone (partly).
Originally a biz account paying on avg. 80 per month that I let lapse.
Even with this new option, Im leaning towards cancelling the account alltogether.
No sense of wasting money on a company that cant get their heads out of their @$$ :p

Rogers PR Rep seems to think their plans are of high value (I laughed)

"We believe our plans are high value and are designed to make the most of the iPhone 3G experience. Thanks for your feedback. Regards, Liz Hamilton"

No Call Display Included

Just so you all realize, none of these plans include call display. If you expect to receive caller ID information with your phone, be sure to add an additional $15/month "iPhone Value Pack" on top of the plan.

All the telco taxes to pay for the social programs in canada. No such thing as a free lunch folks.

Telcos in Canada are not paying disproportionately more taxes than their U.S. counterparts, so it is disingenuous to suggest that Canada's social philosophy of aspiring to a more socially 'just society' is to blame.

I have spoken with senior Telco executives and it is common knowledge that things like 'system access fee' and data here, are simply ways for these companies to maximize profits in the face of no competition.

Your suggestion is ridiculous. I wonder who you voted for in '04?

<sarcasm> Wow! The ATT haters are right. ATT's prices and 2 year contract are outrageous. Why can't we get Rogers in the US!!!!!! I want to be able to have to pay up the nose till it bleeds AND get locked into a THREE year contract. I suppose there is some dolt out there that will note that ATT charges for incoming SMS where Rogers doesn't. Don't even bother. </sarcasm off>

nope, charged for every minute, whether calling or called

Whaaaaaaaaaaat??????:confused::eek::confused::eek:

Value Pack: + $11
Caller ID w/ name display
Enhanced voicemail
125 sent txt/unlimited received
WhoCalled

911 fee: +$0.50

I'm completely flabbergasted by this. You have to pay extra to see who has called or is calling you? And dialing 911 costs you 50 cents?

That's just criminal. You have our (all Europeans) sympathy..

Now I just need to find a way to weasel my way out of a new 3-year contract.

I've called Rogers and discussed me leaving to Korea next month. They said it would be fine, no charge because they can't help that I'm moving away. Great.

So, here's the plan. Sign up for a 3-year plan, keep it for 30 days, then call from Korea and cancel. They would do it for my current phone, why not for the iPhone?

Wow. So I won't be buying an iPhone. That's insane. I already browse a tonne on my iPod Touch, and KNOW that I do close to, if not more than half a gigabyte a month. A YouTube video is how big? I can watch how many of those or download how many albums on it (as I often do) before I reach the $60/month plan limit?

This is very, very disappointing.

Seems like the iPod Touch will become the Canadian iPhone! ;)

Its all great having fancy features but good grief even iam surprised at the back dated anticks of this company and that of apple too. Fair enough apple cant really tell a company how to run its business but shorly they could have worked something out for the benfit of the user. Living in the uk iam tempted to just go with the pay as you go options ok phones expensive to buy out right but at least no contract no hassle and i should hope all the features of the iphone work without a contract ... The person who has just moved to Canada i feel really bad for them and all the other users over there ..

no, unfortunately not. received calls count and most of them are not billed by second. if you make a 30 second call, it counts as a minute.

It's simply AMAZING that you guys in the US and Canada still have to pay/bill received calls...this is so 1990s and unbelievably lame.

Another proof that Europeans, Brazilians and most major civilized markets are WAAAY ahead of those two markets in mobile telephony. You really need to step up the cause with your politicians, because your conditions are worse than Africa's...really.

Someone on another forum was talking about just purchasing an iPhone 3G from Rogers then jailbreaking it. I thought I'd post my reply to them, as others on here may be thinking the same (I'm not trying to be big-headed here, just trying to be helpful)

The other factor here is that you will not be able to purchase an iPhone 3G without also signing a contract with Rogers. You cannot, as you could with the 1st gen, purchase it, walk out the store, jailbreak it and use it with another carrier.

Again some math...

$337.87 - 16GB iPhone 3G including taxes*
$76.22 - One month's worth of contract, even if you don't use the phone**
$100.00 - Min Early Cancellation Fee (not including tax, unsure if it does or not)
$514.09 - Total price for obtaining the 16GB iPhone 3G and freeing it from Rogers.

*This is the rumored subsidized price. It's possible they may offer PAYG, or an unsubsidized phone for a higher price, so the total cost would be even more.

**I recall seeing something about AT&T requiring you to return the phone to them if you cancel within 30 days, thus preventing people just buying the phone and canceling on the spot to jailbreak it. I would fully expect the same to be true with Rogers. If not then I'd expect you to be hit up with the max $400 Early Cancellation Fee.

There is another factor here and that is that the iPhone 2.0 firmware is not final yet, and the phones are not out, so it is still unknown wether they can be jailbroken. I'm sure a lot of effort will be put into it, as with the 1st gen iPhone, however, it could take time. Also, even if you did jailbreak it, who are you going to use as a carrier? Do any other Carriers provide high-speed 3G GSM services in Canada?

I'm completely flabbergasted by this. You have to pay extra to see who has called or is calling you? And dialing 911 costs you 50 cents?

Canadian cellular carriers are required by law to allow all 911 calls even if the phone is out of contract, or if the phone contract has fallen into arrears. In addition, 911 calls never incur any airtime or long distance charges.

However, in order to keep the account in good standing, most carriers will charge you a monthly 911 service fee. Some provincial governments (such as Nova Scotia) also levy their own separate monthly 911 service fee.

wow, just wow... how the hell could apple make a dam good product... lower its price and then not anticipate this from rogers? is this the best they could do? i mean honestly im seriously wishing i was in the us because even though i love it up here rogers fido and the rest are the devil of the technological world.... if you think this is bad check out their bloody internet packs

Canadian government needs to have a word with Rogers and protect their citizens from this perpetual gouging

Everyone seems to say it's bad. I'm using rogers now and had been for 8 years, sometimes my voice plan goes over $60/month and I dont even talk that much. The unlimited evenings and weekends seems like a deal to me.

iPhone.... not tAlk phone... all most people like me want is data and texting thats it the hell with visual voice mail and their stupid minutes.... if i want minutes i'll use their sdk make a vonage app and use my data plan along side vonage to make my bloody calls

Im not sure how useful it will be as Rogers seem to have the monopoly on GSM networks, however I think a petition could go down well with the amount and majority of people that disagree with the charges, maybe Rogers will take note and amend before release?

Anyone with some time on their hands willing to start a petition and pass it round the forums tuaw, macrumours, macnn, gizmodo, engadget etc...?

Thanks
Scott

(emailed today to Steve, Apple Customer Relations, Rogers Media Relations and Rogers Customer Relations)

Steve (or Customer support),

I've been what many would call an "Apple Fanboy" for years. I truly love Apple products and have made it standard practice to tout your virtues wherever I go and I have been waiting for the iPhone to come to Canada for over a year now. Unfortunately, that all ends today.

Rogers Communications recently released their iPhone plans ahead of the July 11th launch and they are abysmal. No unlimited data and no plan flexibility whatsoever. As an Account Manager I travel all over Ontario and need Long Distance minutes as well as unlimited incoming calls in order to keep my monthly bill at a reasonable price. For a new device touted as "Business Friendly" and "Enterprise Ready" it sure doesn't seem that way. Following a great start it appears you have abandoned us (your customers) to the carriers. I am referring to your refusal to sell the original iPhone without unlimited data because what's the point of having an iPhone if you have to worry about data!? For a brief moment it appeared there was hope for regular users, a fleeting moment.

Rogers could have kept their subsidy as I would happily have paid $600 up front for my iPhone in return for a better voice/data plan.

It's a sad day for all your Canadian customers.

Sincerely,

xxxxxxxx

can you give me the email so i can bitch at em too lol

Allow me to add my displeasure to the Rogers plans. With my role at work, I have to carry a BlackBerry with me everywhere I go. I purchased an unlocked iPhone last fall and activated it with a Rogers month by month plan.

Sold my iPhone the day before the new one came out for exactly what I paid for it. Was waiting for 3G to go legit and sign up for one.

BUT - no Unlimited Data and a 3 Year Contract. Forget it. I just cancelled by month by month plan with Rogers and purchased an iPod Touch. Will use my BB for calls and iPodTouch with WiFi for everything else.

Good Bye Rogers.
