I was skeptical before, but now I know I'll not be getting an iPhone anytime soon. Those monthly bills would be worse than gassing up a Hummer.
Status symbols for over consumption.

Maybe my wife will let me play with her iTouch.

do as others have done and email Apple and Rogers and let them know that you will not be purchasing an iPhone 3G and tell them why.

Like any other company, they are both in it to maximize profits. Rogers will adjust their pricing if they feel it is necessary to draw in new accounts or to retain existing ones.

Absurd.

This is brutal.

But I have to say to everyone, I have been using an iPhone in Toronto Canada for the last 6 months.

It is unlocked and has edge turned off - so no data charges - I just use wifi when I can.

It does everything else that the iPhone is famous for, flawlessly.

So I am very happy with it.

I am on an old City Fido unlimited plan and use my iPhone on it.

I was hoping the plans would be reasonable because I would like to be able to check e-mail from anywhere but apparently we are still going to have to wait for Canada to emerge from the clutches of these Telecom oligarchies.

The Achilles' heel of the iPhone is not from Apple. That's for sure! I wonder if Jobs is going to step in? Rogers just screwed Apple!

so u have to pay for incoming calls in the states and canada? thats a lil weird, what if someone hates u and keeps calling u just to raise your bill lol

---

still better as the german plan - 45 $: 500 mb data + 50 minutes, wifi hotspots and NO text messages

I had convinced my buddy to wait, wait, wait so we can buy a 2-iphones bundle and share minutes or something like this. I don't do music, he does. He doesn't surf much, I do all the time. He receives tons of calls, and I wanted to cancel the land line. He needs the syncing of contacts, cal, etc., just like me. You see, the iPhone was just perfect. But with these prices (and the extras, system access, taxes,...) his total bill would surely double from what he's on now and it would be way too expensive for me, considering the data limit. What a shame. Now, I think I'll have to let him renew his ending contract elsewhere and I'll have to shop around for another device. Soooo sad. I don't get it. It's crazy. Or I'm the one who's crazy if I still buy one? Can't decide. Yet.

I'd be interested to know what the charges for going over your data limit are, as people will think 300 is too low and go with a higher plan, thus making even more money for Rogers.

on the website it says 50 cents per MB over up to 60 MB then it is 3 cents per MB over.

Is there another GSM carrier in Canada?

Yes, there are two GSM carriers in Canada: Rogers and Fido. Fido is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rogers.

So from what I understand from their web page, $60/month doesn't even give us caller ID. How ridiculous can this get? Can anybody prove me wrong on this?
Nope, Rogers has not traditionally included either "regular" caller ID, nor "name+number" caller ID in their basic plan rates; they've always been add-ons.

For their regular plans, it has been possible to add either "regular" caller ID or "name+number" caller ID by themselves without being part of a value pack, for $7.00 per month. If you're not interested in the increased outgoing SMS quota or the "WhoCalled" service (basically, sends an SMS message to you if an incoming call is missed because the phone was turned off or outside the service area), then that might be an attractive option. However, I don't know if this will be possible with the iPhone plan or not.

I second the notion. Flood Rogers, Fido and Apple with our emails and the mainstream media will pick it up. We has 2 weeks to make some noise. As a Cityfido and $50 unlimited data subscriber, do they think I would willing give it all up for these plans?

We all need to band together and send a generic email to Rogers stating how we feel....I wonder if I can write one up and create a site people can get togehter and follow my lead? Something needs to be done....

Everyone seems to say it's bad. I'm using rogers now and had been for 8 years, sometimes my voice plan goes over $60/month and I dont even talk that much. The unlimited evenings and weekends seems like a deal to me.

It all depends on what time those evenings start. 5pm is ok but 9 or 10pm is a rip off.

These plans are pretty rough. I guess they could have been worse but still. Makes me wonder if Rogers actually wants to sell iPhones. My sympathies go out to those in Canada.

Rogers coverage is the problem

First off, $60 for a complete plan is in the ballpark for Canada. I'm not happy about it but that is what friends who have owned treos have had to pay.

The real problem is coverage. Canada's old telephone companies are provincially and/or regionally based. 15 years ago they formed an loose partnership to better manage long distance and a new thing - the Internet. This alliance/partnership has long since faded.

Rogers is a relative upstart evolving out of the cable TV business. And while they have a presence in all provinces - making them the only real national company - there coverage outside larger cities is sad. Where I live it is considered a joke. That is not an exaggeration.

In addition to the old companies and Rogers there are a bunch of smaller companies - including Fido which actually made this announcement. None of these smaller companies have there own network of cell towers. All carries are required by law to rent out usage of there cell networks to their competition.

Fido, and most other non-traditional companies, use the Rogers network.

I have always felt that this situation has presented a dilemma for Apple. Do we go with Rogers and have one national carrier for the iPhone in Canada - or do we try to manage relationships with a bunch of regional (and far better established) companies? In the largest country on the planet with a population of 33 million (less than California) the answer was a no-brainer.

I have used Macs since 1985. As do all my kids. I have run three different Mac-based businesses. I am also am Apple stockholder.

I will not be buying an iPhone because if I go more than 30 miles from my home I will have no coverage. Fewer bars in fewer places.

How many times you are connected to a wi-fi network, how many times you really need to get connected on 3G. Come on, get real... Unless you want to impress people by showing a youtube clip at the beach. The 75$+tx+activation+911 is pretty close from 100$ and I still need the early 6 pm night unlimited. I had the 25$ for 4MB last month, some improvment here.

I tell ya~ I used about 100mb pre 4 days in Los Angales with iPhone(using edge) do some math..... yea, all the place have wifi... but the design of iphone is connected in everywhere..

ok.....

well... i live in the USA, and i have an iphone right now, im paying $20 a month, so when ill get the 3G version ill be paying $30 a month and get all the same features-200 txt's unlimited data, visual voicemail right?

I don't get it. It's crazy. Or I'm the one who's crazy if I still buy one? Can't decide. Yet.

We can discuss how crazy we are over lunch in our straightjackets.

I've been waiting for a while, I hate blackberries(I have one with work that I can't get rid of) and the idea of mobile syncing with mobileme is fantastic.

Free unlimited hotspot wi-fi access is a bonus though.

So I am reluctantly on board as an early adopter. Hopefully rogers will do what the UK did when it was initially only offering 1GB/month, but with a little push from Apple and public pressure they went unlimited.

...Does Canada work like Europe in that received phone calls do not count towards those minutes?

No, it doesn't... :(
It's like US but much much more expensive...

I guess that was bound to happen, since Rogers data plans always sucks.

[sarcasm]
Oh wait! Unlimited incoming SMS... Sweet...
[/sarcasm]

they have to pay extra for caller id????????? i thought every phone can do that for free anyway
how can u use over 100 mb in 3 days :O did u download movies with it

i'm glad i'm european once again

I wonder how many people are just going to unlock their iPhones and use another provider?

What other provider?

The other national GSM provider is FIDO.. which belongs to... Rogers!

The regulators thought it would be in the interests of the consumer for Rogers to be a GSM monopoly and OK'ed them to buy Fido.

Good job Rogers, you just lost a customer who wanted the iPhone. Those plans are ABYSMAL!! I was going to get the cheapest which was the $60/month plan but factoring everything in it's more like $93. 150 mins? WTF are you smoking!!! That's so damn low, unlimited evenings/weekends but starting at 9:00 p.m.? That's just as retarded and only 400 MB of data? God, Rogers still sucks and it looks like they won't change.
