Hey Snacks - i've got city fido too, and am trying to price this out. my i ask how much you paying before the data addition, that is, city fido + call display, etc? i've got unlimited local calls + 100 minutes long distance + call display, voicemail, etc. for $54 a month (no SAF). Do you reckon, I got get the whole 6gb deal for $84/month?

Also, how much did you have to pay for the phone?

Thanks!

That seems cheap! What is your value pack cost at?
This is what I had before the iPhone 3G came...

City Fido (Unlimited calling) - $45.00
Value Pack (Call Display,Voicemail, Who's calling, 12meg data/mo) - $18.00
Canada/US calling (30mins/mo) - $5.00
911 - .50
SAF - Null

and for some reason I got charged for "Fido Usage" on my last bill - $1.00

Total before tax - $69.50

They charged me $349.00 for my 16gig iPhone 3G, but gave me a $50.00 credit on my second bill for renewing my contract I guess.

That $106.95 is Tax in...

Sucks you couldn't get one. And yeah, I got lucky as hell! I can't believe hundreds of people walked RIGHT by this place and didn't even realize. The best thing is that they had Fido AND Rogers iPhones!

Which plan did you get if I may ask?

And yeah, it's pretty cool the iPhone. Same quality as my iPod touch, but with a phone! Also, the speaker is surprisingly loud.

Yeah, the store I lined up at had both Rogers and Fido too. In fact, if I was willing to cancel my contract with Rogers right then and there, I could've gotten a Fido 16GB. They found an additional one after they announced they were out. I doubt I would have gotten as good a deal as I did with retentions though. The girl I was talking to actually thanked me for informing her about the iPhone Visual Voicemail Value Pack haha (although she was quite knowledgable otherwise). I do feel for her though. One of the nicest customer service reps I've dealt with and she probably gets flak day in and day out from ppl pissed at Rogers.

My plan is this:
$20 for 250 mins, free evenings/weekends starting at 8pm (+ some other features)
$5 to start evenings at 6pm
$30 6GB data plan
$15 iPhone Visual Voicemail Pack
$6.95 SAF
$0.50 911 fee

My previous plan was a ripoff now that I think about it but I wasn't willing to complain cuz I thought I'd lose my discounts. Although it was nice that I didn't have to lie when I said I was planning on cancelling with Rogers cuz they were ripping me off haha. And they didn't even cancel my ambassador's discount! The monthly fee credit is still up in the air as I didn't want to push my luck... I'll know by the next bill.

Well, Im going to wait, at least until Rogers actually "fixes" their plans for the iPhone 3G, I would absolutely love to have one, its just wayyyy to much money every month for everything. I really hope Rogers truly does do something about their iPhone plans/pricing.

Come on Rogers, GIVE US CANADIANS A BREAK!

I've calculated my Fido plan to be $81 after tax- I have one question though.

Does Fido require you to do a credit check?

So can anyone confirm whether this special $30/month plan includes access to the WiFi hotspots?

If not, then the $60/month for 400 meg plan is made slightly more attractive, since it's likely that you could use the WiFi at many restaurants, etc. so there would be less data to count against your 400 meg limit.

If you're willing to only use your cell for 5 mins of talk time a day, then sure. Otherwise the specific iPhone plans are a rip off. IMO

150 "anytime" minutes plus unlimited weekends and evenings isn't so bad for me. I'm currently on a very no-frills 200-minute plan and rarely go over the allotment. Most of my cell phone usage is in the evening and on weekends so it works out.

With my current plan, I'd be paying $20 a month for 200 minutes + $30 for data (plus misc fees and taxes). With the basic iPhone plan I'd be paying only $10 more for a similar (and potentially much higher) number of minutes, but far less data usage, but includes visual voicemail, texting, and WiFi access.

They seem very comparable, assuming that WiFi hotspot access will help balance out the lower 400 meg data usage. If WiFi access is included in the $30 package too, then that tips the scales in its favour.

Yes, iPhones are included. All you need is an iPhone. Further more, I found out something very very interesting....

Anybody with a Mac and Safari can access Roger's HOTSPOT for free until the end of the year (at least).

Turn on your "Develop" menu and emulate iPhone Safari. Log in to any Rogers HOTSPOT and it will allow it, without asking for a phone number, member number... nothing. It just looks to see if you're an iPhone. The menu "Develop > User Agent" does that :D

So as long as (it thinks) you're using an iPhone, the WiFi hotspots work, period? This means they are accessible to people using the $30/month 6 gig plan as well as people subscribing to the regular, rip-off, iPhone plans.

I'm new to wifi so I may be off base, but it appears that there are only two or three Rogers hotspots in Vancouver. The iPhone plan only applies to Roger's hotspots, correct? I would still have to pay for telus, Bell Mobility hotspots [they have many more than Rogers]. I understand the cell phone companies formed a hotspot alliance, but I don't think the Roger's hotspot plan applies to the other companies...does it?

Also, you still get the free Hotspots without any wifi plan, correct? Sorry for the newbie questions, but, um,...I'm a newbie!:D

wifi plan? do you mean data plan? wifi it's just wireless internet from a woreless router, or at leats thats what i understand, therefore yes, with your iphonw you will be able to connect to any (unsecured) wi-fi signal in teh air, so if you have a wireless router at home or at work or somehting then you dont have to use the data in your plan from rogers you can just use the wifi signal....hope that helps

I think by wifi plan he means one of the $60 voice/data plans that includes 'free' wifi access at Rogers/fido "Hotspots" (not a generic wireless access point, but a branded "HotSpot" coffee-house type location).

But if you're on the $30/6GB plan this seems moot. Who needs "free wifi" with 6GB on a cell?

Alternatively, if you're using your Mac, see several posts above...

Yes, I was trying to get a handle on whether there is any benefit to the iPhone plan over a voice plus 6GB data option. Since there are only about three Rogers/Fido hotspots in Vancouver, that would be a non-factor, but if the iPhone plan actually included something more, then it would a consideration [although I agree, from all "educated guess" accounts, 6GB should suffice].

I look forward to people actually posting their data usage once the info is known. On that point, does anyone know what the data monitoring feature(s) are? I would hope somehow you would have a way of knowing how close you are to running out of your data allowance.

Well I can answer a few of your questions at least. I have a voice + 6GB data for my iPhone and I'm able to access my wifi at home as well as abroad. I'm not sure about any Rogers Hotspots (I should look them up and test this out), but I know that wifi isn't completely crippled if you don't have one of their iPhone voice and data plans.

Second, there's a section in your Settings > General > Usage. It's called Cellular Network Data and shows both sent and received data. It shows only the data used on your plan (ie, 3G or EDGE). I tested this out by using my wifi network heavily (App Store, Safari, Maps) and it didn't change either number at all. But as soon as I disconnected from the wifi and used Safari on 3G, those numbers rose. I plan on resetting mine at the beginning of each billing cycle to make sure I don't go over the 6GB.

that's what i used to do, now, i just asked them to put a block on my data, so i simply cannot connect to edge, and i use it everywhere on wi-fi, maybe doesn't work well for everyone but works perfectly fine for me it automatically connect and downloads my email whenever it catches a connection anywhere i stand by for long enough....

Ive had mine since Wed. Ive been trying to use the data as much as possible. So far Ive used 60mb total since the start. Used the GPS during a road trip, internet via WiFi (no solid coverage up north) and hit YouTube as much as I can. Is this Usage option accurate? I opted for the 6GB....good lord did I make a mistake?

Thank you for the info. It's kind of funny how in the "information age" there can be a roll out of something like the iPhone without full information being provided by the service provider, leaving us to guess and rely on each other for information. I suppose it's to be expected, as cell phone providers have become the modern "used car salesmen" equivalent, engaging in scamming the public with things like legally unenforceable penalty clauses in contracts [remember when cancelling a contract had a term that you had to pay full price anyway...scammed most people since they assumed if its in a contract it must be enforceable. Then they tried negative option billing...then those data charges...would love to see what a court would say if they ever tried to collect on those $20,000 data bills for $35 of service].

[venting over...] so thanks! I'll be getting my iPhones likely in August. Hopefully by then we will actually know how the various plans, charges, services, etc really play out.:)

It appears to work for anybody, regardless if you're a Rogers customer or not!

I shouldn't be saying this here bcuz I'm sure eager to impress Rogers employees are on here and will tell their superiors who'll get that fixed ASAP.

But since I've said it already, as long as the HOTSPOT thinks it's connected to an iPhone – it assumes that the iPhone was bought on Rogers since they're the only Canadian provider – it'll connect. There isn't any authentication process... just a "Connect" button.

How much data are you guys using? I've been playing with this thing constantly, and have only been able to rack up 70 MB in 5 days.

Spectrum Auction

Now that the Spectrum auction is over in Canada, we may end up with
2-3 GSM carriers.
Let's say we get some new carriers, is there any guarantee that Apple
with allow them sell the iPhone ? Or does Rogers have the deal wrapped
up in Canada ?

Thx.

300 in 4 days here
I think mine is broken cause it hasnt moved much since my last report.
and Ive been using the GPS constantly during my trips back and forth to the north. a solid 4 hours of driving at least.
one thing is for sure, Ive been charging this baby at least 3 times a day :(
is there another way to check my usage?

well I guess my Cellular Network Data Usage isnt broken.
however after almost two weeks of non stop use specially during a trip to Vancouver, Ive only managed to use 157mb Received and 6.8mb Sent.
me thinks Rogers planned this really well :p
but still, this phone saved my but a few times on that trip :)
so worth it ;)
