^ good point. I'd rather it connect to WiFi specially when I'm at home. I'm definitely going to be doing a lot of light surfing and research on my iPhone instead of going to the computer.

....anyway, I'm gonna grab my lawn chair, my MacBook Pro and some power bars and camping the rest of the night in front of a Rogers store.

See ya'll in the morning! :)

^^^^ Ha ha ha ha! Amazing.. the second I pressed Submit Reply a torrential downpour started! I ain't camping nowhere in the rain... I want the iPhone but I'm not crazy!

Waiting for the rain to end...

If i signed a contract with Fido now for the iPhone would i be eligible to do a hardware upgrade to a newer iPhone next year? Like after 12 months?

You would have to wait 22 months. Three year contracts are eligible for a hardware upgrade when you are 14 months from the end of your contract. This is better than when they first introduced the three year contracts. Until last year, I believe you were eligible only when you had six months left.

do you anticipate sell-outs anywhere in Canada?

Another question: If you get a 200 minutes anytime plan, who cares if your evenings start at 7 (Fido) vs. 9 (rogers)? Am I missing something? I thought the 200 minute plans come with unlimited weekends/nights....guess I was wrong.
If you don't expect to have and make many calls calls between 7 and 9, there is no difference. If you expect even a moderate number to occur between these hours, then you will be chewing into your 200 anytime minutes. So techinically, you will have 600 more 'free' minutes with Fido per week or about 2400 more per month, especially if you make/receive calls regularly after 7PM.

My contract with Fido gave me 100 anytime and unlimited nights and weekends. I was constantly in overage position, so I called retentions and they bumped me to 300 anytime. I haven't gone over since.

I got my iPhone! First in line @ the Rogers store on Bay Street (@ Adelaide).

I got there at 3:30am and more people began arriving around 4am. We braved the thunderstorm.

So a couple of disappointments:

- All iPhone plans are subject to an admin fee of $35
- Visual Voicemail is not included in the $30 6GB plan, you can't buy it alone either.... you must get a $15 or $20 "value pack"
- As an existing Rogers customer, I had to pay $349 to upgrade my hardware.

No rebate. I guess if I walked off the street and started a new plan, I'd only pay $299... bullshiit Rogers, bullshiit! Way to value your existing customers.

Anyway, I'm happy I finally got my hands on my iPhone... now just waiting for Apple to get the iTunes store back online so I can use it.

Notes: iPhones are sold out in every Rogers store in the downtown core. Rogers @ Toronto Life Square sold out at 7am. Employees passing out cards started giving them out before opening time. They had a total of 68 phones. Rogers Plus on Bay & Adelaide (where I bought mine) had 34 phones total. Wireless Wave stores got only 6 each! Smaller Rogers stores got just 10 total as I had been told earlier this week.
It's all gone folks.. come back next week!

Thanks for the first real info! Can you let us know what voice plan you chose and the overall cost of the total plans? Thanks.

I got the Mega30 Incoming (150 minutes, Free Incoming, Ulimited Eve/Weekends) so:

Monthly:
$30 Mega30
$15 Caller ID, Visual Voicemail, 2500 SMS
$30 6GB Data
$6.65 Service Fee
0.50¢ 911
______________
Total $82.15

One time:
$349 iPhone 16GB White
$35 Admin Fee

For comparison purposes, I often paid $125 for my crappy blackberry plan with 7MB!! This is a definite improvement!

Rogers does not nor ever has valued their existing customers. We are already sheep they have fleeced. If they can try to squeeze more out of you they will, because they can. They will treat non-customers better because they want to fleece them too and don't want to scare them away.

Just got back from the store - they said the official word was from their reps is that you need to sign up for the normal ripoff plans and then call them to change....no other options. So I'm on the phone w/ Fido now. Better work! Otherwise this thing is going back!

That particular store doesn't know what they're talking about. At mine, they signed me up for the $30 6GB promo. 2 of my friends at different stores all got their customers set up.

Nobody is getting through on iTunes to Activate their phones though.

Yup, I know. They absolutely wouldn't budge. THey said it's not even in their system. Now I have to wait on the line for Fido....Argg

Corporate Plan

I am currently on a corporate plan, does anyone know if I can upgrade? I've been told mixed stories. Someone told me I have to ditch my corporate plan and sign up with a normal plan. That's BS..

Lameo

Im waiting as well, the first time I called they told me that I couldn't buy the Black 16g, only the white 16g and black 8gig. "that's what our computers are showing for stock" It seems everytime I call them there is always something new that Im being told...

Just got off the phone w/ fido --- be prepared to wait 45 minutes on hold.
Got my plan switched to what I wanted. Nice :)

How free are your "free incoming" min.?
So when youre in your home area you dont get charged at all? or do you get charged for long distance incoming calls?

Interesting. I entered into a 3-year contract in February 2007. I've been eligible for an upgrade for a couple of months now. The upgrade subsidies are utter crap, mind you, but I've been eligible nonetheless.

At this point though, if I were inclined to replace my current phone (which I'm not), I'd probably just as soon buy whatever replacement unit I chose outright without a subsidy, to avoid committing to a contract extension.

On regular plans, incoming long distance calls cost exactly the same as incoming local calls - if you're in your home area, they're charged at the normal airtime rate, and if you're outside your home area, they're charged at the long distance rate.

I don't suppose the "free incoming" plans would discriminate any differently.

Probably a difference between Fido and Rogers policies. I am with Fido and they have no flexibility with the cancelation penalty or moving the upgrade eligibility window. Fido 3 year contracts are only eligible when you have 14 months remaining.

Finally!

I got someone at Fido that knew what they were doing!

Here it goes..

16gig Black iPhone
City Fido - Unlimited Calling
6gig Data/mo
$15 - Value Pack (Call Display, etc..)
NO System Access Fee (since I have 2 accounts)

Total - $106.95/mo

Basically an Unlimited account, depending how much data I actually use, but for me I consider it unlimited since I won't go over 6gig ;)

Well this is annoying. If you want to order off the Rogers website the only options you have are the 4 iPhone plans that were originally announced. Lame.

can you separate the process of getting the rate plan and getting the phone?

ie. call up retentions to get the plan you want, then go to a store to get the phone (and they can confirm that you just signed a 3-year contract)? Or can retentions ship out the phone once they get you on a new 3-year contract?

I just finished up a contract and I would like retentions to sweeten my deal before I re-sign.. but if I go to a store to get the phone, they won't be able to offer anything other than the standard plans

If you haven't already, call up retentions and work your plan out first. Negotiate the deal you want, and then ask them to create the plan on your account noted as PENDING. It won't activate until you give the word.

THEN, go buy your iphone, and renew on your existing plan, or another available plan. Once you have the iPhone out of the store, call retentions immediately and ask them to activate the pending plan.

You CAN seperate the data and voice options, or go with voice only.

Just got off the phone with Rogers Retentions. They offered me a pretty good plan however the price of the handset itself is prohibitive. They want me to pay $349 + $35 upgrade fee for the 8GB version.

Oh well I can't do that at this point so no iPhone for me.

Anybody else experiencing a ridiculously low number of 16GB iPhones in their area? I think there were all of 4 or 5 at the store I was at (all of which sold out as soon as they opened). I could have gotten the 8GB one, but since the first person in line took over an hour and a half to get out of the store, I have decided to wait. Does anybody know how long it will take for stores to get more in stock? Is this gonna be another Wii phenomenon?

And wth is with the $15 visual voice mail fee if you don't have one of the original iPhone plans? Bah!... The more they change, the more they stay the same...
