Anybody else experiencing a ridiculously low number of 16GB iPhones in their area? I think there were all of 4 or 5 at the store I was at (all of which sold out as soon as they opened). I could have gotten the 8GB one, but since the first person in line took over an hour and a half to get out of the store, I have decided to wait. Does anybody know how long it will take for stores to get more in stock? Is this gonna be another Wii phenomenon?

And wth is with the $15 visual voice mail fee if you don't have one of the original iPhone plans? Bah!... The more they change, the more they stay the same...
The Fido store here got their first restock this morning before they sold out of their original 12 units...a total of 2 units arrived today. They said they had no idea when the next batch would come.

ordered a white 16gb phone through rogers a couple hours ago. kept my same $35 voice plan (with the voicemail/text/call id package i have) and added the $30 6gb data plan. if i take off the data and go to a lower priced voice plan i have to pay back $50.

what does the $15 visual voicemail package include? if it's texts and caller id like i have a may switch up that part.

i had to pay $450 for the phone but i feel it's fair because i used my hardware upgrade last month for a walkman phone - i knew it could cost me on an iphone but i didn't think they'd be subsidized. oh well.

a more senior level rogers guy told my girlfriend bell opted out of the apple deal because they demanded $700 bucks for each 8gb phone and wouldn't let ANY be sold for more than the $199. on the $30 data plan they wouldn't make their money back on a 3 year contract - rogers just wanted to have the iphone. (plus of course bell would have to invest in 3g technology.

so they just charged me more than steve jobs "list" price - better than refusing me the phone - the guy said my cancellation fee would have been $400.

it's been a fun week seeing this evolve - i wish everything in life were cheaper for me and that others paid me more for stuff but all the "robbers", "ass rape" and "signing your life away" comments seem silly and juvenile to me. lets hope this is the level of stuff we all have to complain about for years to come.

The $15 value pack has:
Call Display
WhoCalledTM
2,500 text messages
Caller Ring TraxTM
Call Forwarding(Up to 2,500 minutes of call forwarding)

But I don't think you can really switch anything up, even though this contains some features you already have. Unless you are paying for things like Call Display and texts as separate add-ons to your voice plan. If they are included, as they are in mine, then it really just means I have them from two sources, I guess. I am not changing my voice plan to a different one, as it is grand fathered in and I would lose more by switching.

What a surprise that Rogers isn't offering anything they promised on the day they promised!! This is how they operate. I feel sorry for the poor suckers rooked into this false deal for 3 LONG years.

Well ended up ordering the 8GB over the phone. I did have to overpay for the phone itself as i'm not currently eligible for the credit - had to pay 350+35 for the phone.

Ended up getting a retensions plan consisting of

250 anytime minutes
unlimited rogers to rogers
100 canadian long distance minutes
caller id
voicemail
500 text messages
6GB data
-------------
$70

and then a $40 random credit.

This sounds like a good plan. Sorry for the newbish question, but how do you talk to retensions? Do I just call customer service or is there a special number I have to call?

Just call up and when the machine says what can i help you with. Say "Retensions". Although they can only help existing customers... If you are new, you don't get any of the new plans

I've been with Rogers for almost 10 years now. I think I qualify for talking with retensions haha. Thanks for the info!

Sure, rub it in why don't you. *grumble* Congrats tho. Must've lined up early?

I think I'll order thru the phone. Will take me a bit longer to get it, but at least I'll know it's coming. And no more waiting in lines...

I got someone at Fido that knew what they were doing!

Here it goes..

16gig Black iPhone
City Fido - Unlimited Calling
6gig Data/mo
$15 - Value Pack (Call Display, etc..)
NO System Access Fee (since I have 2 accounts)

Total - $106.95/mo

Basically an Unlimited account, depending how much data I actually use, but for me I consider it unlimited since I won't go over 6gig ;)

Hey Snacks - i've got city fido too, and am trying to price this out. my i ask how much you paying before the data addition, that is, city fido + call display, etc? i've got unlimited local calls + 100 minutes long distance + call display, voicemail, etc. for $54 a month (no SAF). Do you reckon, I got get the whole 6gb deal for $84/month?

Also, how much did you have to pay for the phone?

Thanks!

Is it only Winnipeg Rogers stores that are holding the iPhones of their customers because they sold them but are not able to ACTIVATE them (they say the Central Sales is down as well as the phone?!)

Is it possible that I have just chosen a bad store...? :(

The good news is that at least I will be getting one, once they are able to "activate" it...;)

You sir are a godsend. Thanks to your tip about retentions, I am now going to be paying at worst $13 more and at best the same price I do currently (depends if my monthly fee credit carries through. Didn't want to push it as it was supposed to have been cancelled years ago when the noticed their snafu) to have pretty much the same plan (minus 100 daytime I don't use anyway AND an additional 5.995 GB data) for a shiny new 16 GB black iPhone. Thanks again!

Edit:

For those wondering, this is my plan:

250 daytime, free evenings/weekends starting at 6pm
visual voicemail
call display
who called
2,500 sent text msgs
call waiting
6 GB data

$70

This doesn't include discounts or system access or 911 fees.

Haha, funniest story ever. Get this.

I walk into the mall - go to the Rogers store to see - this was at around 9. I was willing to wait one hour.

I get to the store - PACKED! Like 200 people! It was insane!

So I just decide to leave

On the way back I pass by this tiny mobile phone store - nobody's there except one guy waiting in line - I ask the sales rep - you're gonna sell the iPhone? He tells me yes - people just don't know they were selling it! So it was just a matter of walking in and picking it up. I got real lucky I guess.

The guy in front of me asks for the 8 gb black, and I get the 16 gb Black.

All the while people are lining up in front of the rogers store...

Holy hell that's lucky. Although I don't think many people were aware of the smaller stores selling them since that's pretty much what happened to me. I figured I'd be safe not getting there an hour early (yeah don't ask, not one of my brightest moments) so I walk by the Rogers store only to find this huge line in front of it. Walk by a Phone Booth with the same results. Finally after thinking it was game over, I walk by a Wireless Wave and there's maybe 8 people standing there. Ask the store rep and he says we'll all definitely get iPhones. But as soon as the first four walk in, he turns around and says "sorry folks, no more 16GBs left". I wasn't too impressed...

Although I'm not too concerned since I've got one coming in the mail in 3-5 business days. Beats having to check for stock all the time. Not to mention the sweet plan I got out of it :p

btw, congrats on the iPhone! Hope it's living up to all your expectations.

Got mine, no hassle. Stopped into my small-town Rogers store at 1:30pm. No other customers, lots of iPhones! Chose a white 16GB. Did the paperwork to switch over my Bell Mobility number. The store manager said the activation website was clogged so they'd need a couple of hours; went and had a couple of Friday afternoon cocktails and came back at 5:00pm. All set, switched on, working great! My only complaint is that the signal strength sucks in my rural area -- where my old Bell phone had 5-bars, my iPhone has two. And I can't get any signal at all inside my house. Oh well, that's rural Ontario life I suppose. :apple:

uhm...sorta got a question...

I already have a wireless contract with rogers.
So if i were to get the iPhone would Rogers charge me their System Access Fees twice?

Thanx

Edit: Also will i be eligible for a hardware upgrade at no extra charge after 12 months with rogers? (for the new iphone)

FYI Manitobans

Just made the move to get one via phone@Rogers.
Not sure if its just for Manitobans but I got the 250min Unlimited for $10.
Added the 6GB and $15 VV package.
I didnt plan on doing this until I got hit with a $58 addition to my bill due to texting :p
I thought I had unlimited texting since 2004 :p
Just checked all my prev bills and I cant believe what I was paying on top :(
I feel dumb but I guess the iPhone delivery will make up for that :)

Argh, why does buying a cell phone have to be like buying a car? Takes hours and you have to haggle for every damn thing.

This is making me think twice about getting one. I don't want to spend an hour on the phone begging for a good deal. Just set fair prices and charge everyone the same, just like every other bloody store.

The salesmen at my store weren't very bright. They were panicking "how do Itake out the sim! I need to go find a paperclip" and I tell them "Uh, there's a sim ejector tool like right in front of you!" - and they forced me to sign up with their 60$ plan - they said I'd have to call Fido to get the plan I wanted (200 minutes + 6 GB data).

I told them that the phone would come right back if it didn't work out with Fido. Luckily it was easy to change plans but the fido rep on the phone said they weren't following the instructions (duh..)

Sucks you couldn't get one. And yeah, I got lucky as hell! I can't believe hundreds of people walked RIGHT by this place and didn't even realize. The best thing is that they had Fido AND Rogers iPhones!

Which plan did you get if I may ask?

And yeah, it's pretty cool the iPhone. Same quality as my iPod touch, but with a phone! Also, the speaker is surprisingly loud.

Nice job on getting one easily!

This post is the most sense I've read in a long time. Prices should just be low for everyone and no bargaining is allowed. Give existing customers a better deal to renew, sure, but offer the same thing to EVERYONE because then people feel like they're getting/got ripped off if they know someone with something better.

Just price the plans low and if you dont like it , tough, no bargaining. They'll get more volume if their prices are lower and people will trust them more.

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting an unlocked iPhone and just getting a fido pre-paid plan. Does anyone know if you can add data plans to pre-paid? (Apparently their online store is having "technical difficulties" right now.)

Thanks.

Of the three major companies in Canada, guess which one hasn't decided (yet) to rip off their customers on text messaging? That's right. Rogers.

The other two, unbelievably, have just made the decision to start charging for *incoming* text messages. INCLUDING SPAM MESSAGES.

Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

Rogers is shining this morning. Absolutely shining.

This is only for people who DON'T have a texting plan. Also you can forward any spam to a number and they won't count it against you.
