Now if this were to trickle south...

A major reason why I won't upgrade to the new iPhone: that AT&T will now charge extra for text messages on the 3G iPhone!

I have a two year old SonyEricsson W600i under a family plan that includes text messages-I believe most mobile phone providers include text messages under their flat rate. AT&T does 'nickle and dime" their customers.

Well did Jesus rise from the dead or what? I never thought they would change there plans because of some silly petition.

I betcha you could still burn through 6GB in a month without tethering.
In Switzerland, they start charging 10 cents per MB once you get over the limit up to maximum of $5 per day or in other words $150 month maximum per month (for data). The limits vary between 100 and 1000 MB/month.

I think this is the first time I have seen an online petition actually do something.

Nah... Netcom (in Norway) not only caved to the fri-iphone.org petition and introduced the iConnect plan (with free data), but actually invited the two students behind the petition to the official launch party... :D

Nice

I'm pleasently suprised, I'm not entirley sure why they need to have a limit though, even in the UK the O2 is limitless but has that catch-all 'reasonable use', which I think is reasonable.

Good to see the noise made a difference in Canada.

I'd buy now, but I don't think I could swallow the huge Telus ETF only months before the contract end. Ugh. I guess I'm still in the same boat here.

Of the three major companies in Canada, guess which one hasn't decided (yet) to rip off their customers on text messaging? That's right. Rogers.

The other two, unbelievably, have just made the decision to start charging for *incoming* text messages. INCLUDING SPAM MESSAGES.

Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

Rogers is shining this morning. Absolutely shining.

Unlimited please...Rogers you are missing the point

Another $30 for 6GB....seriously.

Let me help you. Just cut and paste the ATT unlimited model. Done.

Also you might want to include their well presented homepage for the iPhone as well...tells you if you are eligible for an upgrade, where to buy, when etc. Simple.

I just saw this on Rogers Site...

http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/iphone_voice_data_packages

"While the iPhone 3G Voice and Data Packages allow you to use this device to its fullest and offer savings over separate voice and data plans, they are not the only options available to you. Other pricing options are available. For example, you may choose to combine one of our new data plans ranging from $30 per month (for 300MB) to $100 per month (for 6GB) with a voice plan. Learn More. They are available by calling 1 888 ROGERS1 or by visiting your nearest Rogers retail location."

$30 is for 300MB and $100 for 6GB. Is this an old page?

Yes Virginia there is a Santa Clause...

Have a look at the clauses in a Rogers contract. If there was a Santa clause in there, it would be the clause that required you to hand over your firstborn to toil in the Antarctic toy mines.

Yay! Fido $20 plan + $30 data for me Friday morning!

are you talking about hte plan for 20$ = 200 minutes? How much to add visual voicemail, caller id, etc.?

I don't think i'm crazy enough to go Friday morning to pick this thing up...

I think it was a combination of the petition and pressure from Apple.

It's great that they're actually doing something though, because the old plans were ridiculous. The three year contract is a little much, but maybe that's normal for our neighbors to the North?

AT&T's "Unlimited" plan is soft capped at 5GB, so this 6GB plan is more "unlimited" than AT&T.

I can't believe this! This is amazing!

Just confirmation
1. This does/doesn't come with visual voicemail?
2. Is this at every store?
3. If I wanted one, what time should I stand in line, because these stores are gonna be buzy!

Do the math

C'mon folks,

I'm as much of a fan boy as the next person here, and I'm seriously trying to find a way to justify paying Rogers' rates so I can be in line on Friday. But this is NOT a good deal. You're still capped and leaving yourself open to overage charges, it doesn't include visual voice mail (that's an extra $8), you'll be paying extra for messaging, and none of the voice packages that you combine this will total a monthly package that's anywhere comparable to what you can get from AT&T. Just because they promise not to rape me as hard as before, don't expect me to say thank you.

John Gruber called BS on this "spat" and maybe he was right. Look at the publicity. Plenty of people that were like, "hell no I'm getting an iPhone from Rogers" are changing their tune. Interesting...
