The question still might be availability.

The fact that Rogers made this a time limited offer instead of a regular part of their pricing schedule is suspicious.

lets get realistic for just a moment, please

NOBODY is going to use 3, 2, or even 1 GB on the iphone. so all these discussions and offerings are just mind-f***.

the fact remains that rogers is acting (or is? i am not in canada) like a monopolist and will only budge when the pressure is on.

Quite hoenstly I dont think this is because of the petition. well it might sorta be, but I think this is the doing of Apple.

If noones noticed yet the iPhone is partly apples future. CLEARLY Rogers was offering ridiculous plans that noone would want, how do you think Apple would take this? If I was steve jobs I'd get myself into my private jet and fly straight to canada to speak to Rogers CEO the instant I knew what their prices would be.

Sure, maybe the petition just helped apples arguement, like while Apple is fighting wiht Rogers they say "can you prove our prices suck?" Apple waves a nice petition in their face.

But I still strongly believe this is the doing of apple.... also remember, technically Apple is the one in total power right now, Apple can just as easily shrugged to Rogers and said "whatever we know tons of company's that would kill to have our iPhone... even better yet, OTHER countries would kill to have your shipments" What im getting at is im sure apple was able to twist Rogers arm just as bad as Rogers twisted ours.

are you talking about hte plan for 20$ = 200 minutes? How much to add visual voicemail, caller id, etc.?

I don't think i'm crazy enough to go Friday morning to pick this thing up...

Yes, the 200 anytime minutes plan.

I think it is $8 to add visual voice mail. Normal voice mail is $7. So, not sure if you pay the $8 for visual voice mail, you get standard voice mail service, or if you need to pay both for $15 a month. Called ID is extra too.

But, I don't plan on getting voicemail or caller ID, at least initially. I don't need it and I won't be calling a lot. I'll just use the voice for occasional calls or emergencies. The data is the thing I *really* wanted, and I plan to use extensively.

It's not perfect, but it's good enough. I'll be buying one now for sure.

This is terrific. I like this much better. Now, i can have the flexibility of choosing my voice only plan, and adding this data only for only $30 more.
I can choose a $40 plan, and then add the data package. Because a) i dont use the cell phone tons and b) i dont want to spend $115 to just get good data transfer amount.

I would like to know as well

Highly doubtful.

Fido too

Fido has a similar press release offering the 6gb data plan.

Only thing that has me worried is the 'in market' plan text. My guess is that city fido will not qualify for this.

Oh well, its still a very good deal compared to what was offered before. I'm getting one. Rogers has shown some flexibility here, and given the phones battery issues, I doubt I'm going over 6gb a month.

FYI the only Fido store thats opening early is in Montreal.

Ok, no voicemail for me, but I will get caller ID. It's frustrating not knowing who called ever.

Now if this were to trickle south...

A major reason why I won't upgrade to the new iPhone: that AT&T will now charge extra for text messages on the 3G iPhone!

I have a two year old SonyEricsson W600i under a family plan that includes text messages-I believe most mobile phone providers include text messages under their flat rate. AT&T does 'nickle and dime" their customers.

As far as I know, I'll be able to continue under the unlimited $30/month texting family plan that I currently enjoy with my 1st gen iPhone. For some time I was paying the extra $10 for 1500 texts, but now I just pay the $20 data + $30 for the whole family to text on an unlimited plan.

Also, is ATT's "unlimited" data plan really capped at 5 gigs here in the US? I know 5 or even 6gb seems like so little these days, but I consider myself a pretty heavy data user, and I only seem to be pulling between 100 and 200 mb a month according to my bill. I guess I'm on WiFi often enough...

This is a great development! Finally Rogers are beginning to come to their senses. Though I don't like how this is only a limited time offer.

No announcement from Fido yet.

wow power to the people, well done everyone. While not unlimited, a giant leap forward for Canadian data rates

Shame its limited offer.

Rogers couldn't keep the rates how they were - too much bad press. I wonder if they'll decrease the regular rates after the promotion ends.

I noticed today - all of the FIDOs monthly packages are all expiring 5th August... wonder what sort of monthly plans they'll be replaced with...

I think this is the first time I have seen an online petition actually do something.

P-Worm

There was a big internet hoorah about Netflix doing away with profiles... That worked...

Glad to see my neighbors to the north got a little better deal, although since you can download smaller Apps and watch YouTube over the cell network, I bet some people could go over 6GB!

The reason Apple stepped in, was because we as customers were unhappy. If Rogers left their prices the way they were, and on one said anything about it, Apple would have let it fly, but because there was so much anger towards Rogers and people were going to not buy the iPhone, Apple felt the need to step in, as it's loss profit for them.

Also, there is no other company in Canada with a 3G network, so Apple wouldn't be able to turn to anyone else. It's either Rogers or no one.

very good point, i was thinking about the same thing too. not only city fido will be be qualified, i'm afraid that all these retention plans will not be qualified either.

Just got off the phone with retentions

Just got off the phone with retentions (sales doesn't know about this 6GB plan yet).

I removed the data from my blackberry and added a $30 Mega30 plan. 150 + unlimited Incoming - 90% of my calls are incoming and free evenings and weekends.

I'm also grandfathering my $11 Communication Value pack (150/Free Incoming SMS+ CallerID + Name ID + Voicemail).

You can only add the $30 6GB plan at the store.

All iPhones, regardless of the plan includes visual voicemail. .

So look at that, I'm actually paying less than my rip off BlackBerry plan ($90 + tax) and getting way more for only

$77.75 + tax all included (monthly $6.75 included)

Ok, no voicemail for me, but I will get caller ID. It's frustrating not knowing who called ever.

When I tell people I have a new cell phone, I'll just tell them that I have it always checking email, so if they can't get a hold of me, just send me an email and I'll immediately get it when I check my phone and will call back. (Or they can IM.)

I guess if I get a lot of telemarketing calls, I'll have to pay for the Caller ID.

the 6gb for $30 doesnt include voicemail

It's a good step, but I wonder if Rogers would offer 3GB of data for $15? I don't think I'm ever going to use all 6GB, and doubling the cost of my current contract isn't too appealing. Oh well at least there's been something offered.

You are not actually paying for 6 GB. You are paying for the average amount of what anyone on this 6 GB plan is using, which is probably less than one GB.

It is like a gym membership which allows you to go to the gym six days a week, ten hours a day = up to 60 hours a week. The gym wouldn't offer you a plan limited to 30 hours a week for half the price, because almost nobody goes there for more than five hours anyway.

Are you sure that's not only if you get one of their special-ripoff iphone plans?

Which makes me wonder, who's going to buy the $100 or $115 plans now that there is a $30 6 gig option? They'll be paying twice (or more) what I'll be paying and getting only 1 sixth or 1 third of the data. Sure, you get more minutes and visual voicemail and stuff, but damn. I guess there's a lot of suckers out there. :)
