Was hoping for a consumer version of the Mac Pro for around $1000. This is well out of my price range, but also more power than I would ever need, so lets see what the future holds if this machine is a success.

I don't know why, but the feet make me think of Porgs. "Cheese grater" has been used. I say Mac Porg.

2 years ago (after years of Apple neglecting the expandable Mac market) I bought a machine with similar specs to this new base model 2019 Mac Pro.

8 core processor? Check -- AMD Ryzen 1700x with 8 cores/16 threads
32 GB of DDR4-2666? Check
1 TB of SSD storage (actually more than this Mac Pro starts with). Check
nVidia GTX-1060 graphics with 6 GB VRAM. Check
High quality tower case with easy motherboard access and room for expansion? Check
Runs virtually silent even with 3 fans inside the case (one of them being mounted onto the CPU to keep it cool without a 9" tall 15" long heatsink? Check

And for this bucket of magnificence I paid around $1,300. Granted I needed to snap the pieces together myself, but that's really not so difficult and didn't take more than two hours of my time. Is two hours of my time worth an extra $3,700? Nope. I'm all good, thanks.

Too bad I needed to give us MacOS to do this. I really love MacOS. I really wish Apple gave a damn about users who want an expandable headless Mac who cannot justify a 2nd mortgage on their home just for the entry model.

I knew this kind of thing would happen, you can’t compare this workstation to your home computer. Your computer may have similar face value specs but I don’t think the AMD Ryzen can hold a candle next to the intel Xeon in the new Mac Pro.

First impressions:
- Potentially powerful. (if loaded).

- Obscenely expensive. (250% more expensive than the original Mac Pro).

- Pro...? Not really. A Pro machine that costs 6k does not ship with 8 cores and 256 SSD. That's more like a rip off.

A lot of users that have been waiting for this including me, I know they will pass due to the obscene price.

I love it. Apple has covered all possible Pro needs (Mac mini, iMac, MacBook Pro, iMac Pro, Mac Pro), depending on workflow, and budget, this is what we all wanted and asked for. They have probably put more effort and R&D into Pro market then ever before.

Pffftt pocket change for some people I know who will recoup that cost with one job. This is for professionals who do high end work.
If you told me a Bugatti cost $2 million I wouldn't be surprised.

If you told me the passenger seat of the Bugatti cost another $50,000.00 I would not bat an eyelash at the price.

I'd be wondering why you're charging me for a passenger seat.

I'm not that concerned about the cost of the stand; I just find it odd they charge for a stand in the first place.

And when adjusting for inflation, it's half the price of a Mac II (another pro workstation, back in 1987, that finally gave people slots etc. instead of all-in-one systems).

FYI tech prices actually depreciated over time. So inflation does not really matter. Your comparison is nonsense.
And if you look at the Boxx machines, to compare Apples to Apples, Boxx machines with 8 cores with faster processors (4.9Ghz) 32gb Ram and 512 SSD is half the price than the Mac Pro.

Did you gear the crowd at wwdc gasp at that price?

I sure did. Don’t get me wrong, it’s certainly an awesome machine, which I’m sure the display is beautiful to work with, but $12k or more for a set up, that’s crazy! Apple is not Pixar or Lucasfilm, so why so much for this machine, at least why release it with the software previews? Seems like two wide ends of the spectrum. Just saying...

I don't know enough about that industry, but I'm just guessing that might change after this. This computer is in it for the long haul.

Sure. Just like the Workgroup Server. Or the Xserve. Lots of people will end up with $6,000+ paperweights when Apple eventually kills it. They just can't help themselves.

Was it my imagination or did it look more wedge shaped in the livestream? Non-wedged it looks rather decent.

I am curious why the base model Mac Pro is $1,000 more than the base model iMac Pro which has also has an 8-core Xeon and 32GB of RAM but the base model iMac Pro has 4x as much SSD space, a much more powerful GPU, and a 5k display to boot. I get that you are paying for expandibility but the initial price seems high or else the iMac Pro now looks like a screaming good deal.

Willing to sell my lightly used iMac Pro! Any takers?

At WWDC today, Apple unveiled its much-anticipated Mac Pro redesign, and following its keynote the company offered journalists some brief time with the machine - although admittedly nobody was allowed to use or even touch it.

With that in mind, we've highlighted some of the more interesting quotes from those who were lucky enough to get up close with Apple's most powerful Mac to date.

Unsurprisingly given the "hands-off" nature of the preview, TechRadar opined on the aesthetics of the redesigned Mac Pro:

TechCrunch was less impressed with the look of the new Mac Pro, and questioned the "cheese grater" industrial design choice.
Gripping the handle on top of the Mac Pro and lifting the lid exposes the internal components, and Engadget noted how this makes the internals "relatively accessible" compared to the previous design.

As for the display, Engadget said:
The Verge chose to focus on the sheer power of the new Mac Pro, which is heavily geared towards video, music, and photo editing.

The new Mac Pro starts at $5,999 with an eight-core Intel Xeon processor, 32GB of ECC RAM, AMD WX 7100 graphics, and 256GB of SSD storage, and will be available to order in the fall. Apple's new 32-inch 6K display named the Pro Display XDR will also be available in the fall starting at $4,999.

What's the IP rating for dust on this computer and monitor?
I love the fact Apple made this Mac Pro. I just wish they had a cheaper entry level option at $3/4K price with 1TB/64GB RAM.
The prices are just too insane high.
The display is incredible, but $7k with stand and nano tech is ridiculous. They could have an option @ 5K display at $2500 with stand/nano.

Around $13k to get a MP/Display combo is not a feasible option for most Pro's.

Yeah sure wish there were less hot-rodded cheaper intro options but then again, we've gotten used to tech "affordability" even with Apple. If I remember correctly, the plastic 24" ACD originally started at $3K? Or was the 30" ACD? Heck my first Mac in 1992 … a Quadra 700, 15" NEC monitor, color scanner, crappy HP ink jet printer plus a couple software apps (on floppies) cost over $10k.

I love it. Apple has covered all possible Pro needs (Mac mini, iMac, MacBook Pro, iMac Pro, Mac Pro), depending on workflow, and budget, this is what we all wanted and asked for. They have probably put more effort and R&D into Pro market then ever before.

Really? Pros wanted storage and CPUs which couldn't be upgraded? And for just $6,000?

I'm not that concerned about the cost of the stand; I just find it odd they charge for a stand in the first place.

Well, probably because a lot of users will want to mount it on a monitor arm anyway and it'd be a waste to just bundle in the stand into every display. Sure it's expensive, but if I were already spending $5,000 on a monitor, I'd be glad that I'm not paying for the bundled stand if I'm just going to remove it once I take the display out of the box.

That stand is what a lot of people were asking for. They wanted a top notch Apple design that was simple and elegant and worked. Well, surprise surprise... it'll cost ya.

That display or the stand ain't for 99% of the people reading this thread.

Maybe the price will come down within a few years. If it does, then maybe some of us can consider it. Right now it's not just the insane price that'll keep lots of people away, but driving a 6K monitor is going to be murder on your machine. My 2018 MBP has a hard enough time powering my LG 5K.

I had a 30" Apple Cinema Display for many years and I remember seeing it in the the store and dreaming of owning it one day. It seemed so insanely out of reach, but 6 years later I got my hands on one which was a dual result of me growing my business and the price of the display coming down around 30%.

In 5 or 6 years that display might be in the $3-$4 range... still expensive to be sure, but within reach to serious prosumers. Right now, it's a pro workstation solution only.

Sorry if I hit a sensitive core here; I been working with computers since I was 15, I from the generation that actually spend time in the real world, when I’m done working I go off the grid…computer gaming never appeal to me…I been bias I know.

Perhaps if you were not rude nobody would have nothing to say, no? Also, everybody knows that whoever uses the words “real men” is automatically out of the RM club.
