I knew this kind of thing would happen, you can’t compare this workstation to your home computer. Your computer may have similar face value specs but I don’t think the AMD Ryzen can hold a candle next to the intel Xeon in the new Mac Pro.

It wouldn't seem this would be correct. This is a Core/Xeon comparison, and it looks like Intel is just charging quite a bit more for the Xeon without a clear reason.

Not really, not for the people it's intended for.

You are right, but it is missing the point. There are a TON of people that were immediately priced out of this Mac Pro. I’m an audio guy, so my video needs are considerably less than FCP users. I make my living on my music, albeit a meager one, but it is how I survive. If others can justify $6k for 32gb ram and a 256gb SSD, more power to ‘em (literally).

A $4k version of this with a few downgraded specs would have sold a bunch of machines. A bunch of us Logic Pro users were waiting for this tower to be released, but unfortunately I won’t be in that group of buyers. I’d rather find a used iMac Pro, get the 1TB SSD and screen without plunking more money down.

I think the design is fine, because honestly could care less what it looks like. It would sit under my desk anyway, if I were the level of professional that could buy this. I’m certainly happy for those who can.

I really hope they sell a lot of these. As far as I can see, it’s perfect for large photo editing, image creation, video editing, rendering, etc... The one thing I don’t see Apple really going for are the 3D gaming industry workstations which normally use Nvidia. Other than that, this machine ticks boxes for all the other work that can be thrown at it. The only thing I see this workstation missing is a drive array slot. If they only built a RAID caddy system that can just be slapped into these workstations and use the same power supply, that would be awesome. Thunderbolt III is great but it’s another piece of equipment you have to carry and needs it’s own power supply.

Have there been any details released about a mounting bracket for internal SATA drives?

AN iMac Pro gives you a xeon 8-core, 32 gigs of RAM, a fast gpu and 1TB SSD and a 5k display for $5k.

The new Mac Pro gives you LESS and WITHOUT the display for $5999...

Apple's gone insane and arrogant. What a disappointment for the pro users

So are those base prices BEFORE Trump's tariffs? I assume these are all being made and assembled in someplace other than Texas (you know, the only "South" America that Trump recognizes).

Sorry if I hit a sensitive core here; I been working with computers since I was 15, I from the generation that actually spend time in the real world, when I’m done working I go off the grid…computer gaming never appeal to me…I been bias I know.

No need to apologize, too many soft feelings. Normally, I can defend Apple, but when I say the monitor and the ridiculous arm for $1k, I lost my mind. I don’t k ow how anyone can defend the price with a straight face.

6K for a base level machine that a year old laptop with built in screen iMac can run rings around? 8-10K for a properly kitted machine is more like what it was SUPPOSED to be. I can kinda, sorta buy that, although I'm pretty sure it puts them way more expensive similar "high-end workstations." BUT, wait a minute... a machine that CAN NOT DO CUDA? Huh? How can ANY pro in their right minds shut themselves off from all the software that makes use of CUDA? And all because they had some pissing match years ago... like a couple of 9 year olds and while nVidia grew up, the wormy fruit is sticking to their 9 year old, wha-wha, pissy ideas??

Isn't that what the Mac Mini is for?

Well, probably because a lot of users will want to mount it on a monitor arm anyway and it'd be a waste to just bundle in the stand into every display. Sure it's expensive, but if I were already spending $5,000 on a monitor, I'd be glad that I'm not paying for the bundled stand if I'm just going to remove it once I take the display out of the box.

That stand is what a lot of people were asking for. They wanted a top notch Apple design that was simple and elegant and worked. Well, surprise surprise... it'll cost ya.

That display or the stand ain't for 99% of the people reading this thread.

Maybe the price will come down within a few years. If it does, then maybe some of us can consider it. Right now it's not just the insane price that'll keep lots of people away, but driving a 6K monitor is going to be murder on your machine. My 2018 MBP has a hard enough time powering my LG 5K.

I had a 30" Apple Cinema Display for many years and I remember seeing it in the the store and dreaming of owning it one day. It seemed so insanely out of reach, but 6 years later I got my hands on one which was a dual result of me growing my business and the price of the display coming down around 30%.
So I agree with what you're saying. My 2019 15 inch chugs a bit when pushing a 27 inch Dell 4 and the LG Ultra-fine 4K at the same time. I have not hooked it up to my LG UltraFine 5K, but will try that next.

Anway, I could have sworn she said the 13 inch MBP would run that beast over TB3. I will have to go back and re-watch, but I could have sworn she said it. I think a loaded 2017 iMac will drive it.

As for the price, buying it, etc. there was an outside chance I would have bought it, even at that price. I just can't justify another $1,000.00 for the stand on top and the monitor would not be in a position to be mounted.

Ah, a fresh thread to vent my rage... RAGE!

Nah, it's a technically great machine, even if it is way outside the price range of many previous Mac Pro owners.

... ah but the price range of previous Mac Pro is way outside the price range for me.

Although, 1.5 TB of Ram and 28 Cores of Xeon power.... I guess there's no way that could be cheap!

2 years ago (after years of Apple neglecting the expandable Mac market) I bought a machine with similar specs to this new base model 2019 Mac Pro.

8 core processor? Check -- AMD Ryzen 1700x with 8 cores/16 threads
32 GB of DDR4-2666? Check
1 TB of SSD storage (actually more than this Mac Pro starts with). Check
nVidia GTX-1060 graphics with 6 GB VRAM. Check
High quality tower case with easy motherboard access and room for expansion? Check
Runs virtually silent even with 3 fans inside the case (one of them being mounted onto the CPU to keep it cool without a 9" tall 15" long heatsink? Check

And for this bucket of magnificence I paid around $1,300. Granted I needed to snap the pieces together myself, but that's really not so difficult and didn't take more than two hours of my time. Is two hours of my time worth an extra $3,700? Nope. I'm all good, thanks.

Too bad I needed to give us MacOS to do this. I really love MacOS. I really wish Apple gave a damn about users who want an expandable headless Mac who cannot justify a 2nd mortgage on their home just for the entry model.

ALL the components you listed are cheaper and less powerful that the MP components. The CPU cost twice as yours. Your computer memory isn’t ECC, that’s a lot more expensive. And so on and so on. Everyone the knows the first thing about computers knows that “8 core”, “1TB” are totally meaningless qualification by themselves.

If these are well received, you might get your wish in a few years. An entry level version of this design would create two issues. First, it would be competing with their own iMac Pro. Second, it might have required them to make compromises in how they wanted to design this launch edition and I'm sure they wanted to absolutely nail it for the upper upper end market that this is designed for.

Perhaps in a few years, the iMac Pro is quietly phased out and replaced with a "mini-Mac Pro."

I really love it. It has that old-school Apple weirdness that works. It's like the Cube and the G5 had a love child. The Display is beautiful as well.

Am I the only person who thinks this is ugly?
If I'm gonna drop $5 grand I want something better looking.

The handle and legs are alone are fugly.

I wish they would design a similar monitor for prosumers at a more affordable price point. The only way I'd be able to afford this pair is for me to win the lotto tomorrow <.<

If you told me a Bugatti cost $2 million I wouldn't be surprised.

If you told me the passenger seat of the Bugatti cost another $50,000.00 I would not bat an eyelash at the price.

I'd be wondering why you're charging me for a passenger seat.

I'm not that concerned about the cost of the stand; I just find it odd they charge for a stand in the first place.

Maybe because the stand is optional.
