Hopefully MS will put those new chips/heatsink in all 360 just in time for the holidays and make it a real deal.

I read something on Joystiq the other day about the Halo 3 360s having the Falcon 65nm cpu...I would expect that any future bundles and/or systems that aren't already on store shelves will be the new Falcon models. (or so we can all hope at least)

Sounds like everyone's on damage control (Microsoft more than the others)...
Overheating 360s, faulty wheels for MS
Weak Wii straps, busted flying controllers for Nintendo
Sticker shock for Sony

So far though it seems like all three are rectifying their problems to the best of their abilities

Nice job, looks like a nice balance of what you need and nothing you don't. Again, I could do without the memory stick slots and the wireless for the extra price, which is why I had planned on getting a used 20 gig sometime next year, but I may just pick up one of these instead since it'd be 'new'.

In all honesty I could care less about the B/C, my Ps2 slim isn't going anywhere. ;) (especially when I finally mod it :D)

Wow, a huge leap forward there.

But

The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles

See, why doesn't it play older games? Isn't it all software emulated now? Making it a complete no-buy for me since I've got an army of PS2 games to play (or should Sony advise me on buying both a PS2 and 3? ).

silly silly silly.

First its to expensive, now it doesn't have enough features. silly silly silly.
I doubt Sony will ever satisfy you jimmi.

btw - you've got an army of PS2 games and no PS2?

Yes I do, I started collecting apparently good PS2 games when the PS3 was hailed as this uber device, then things went downhill. They're still waiting. Okami, Ico, SotC and various fighting and shmups (R-Type Final, I get to play thee yet). Also got all my PS1 games and a dead PS1.

Can you not see (wait, silly question to ask you :D ) it being slightly retarded to remove the feature to play PS2 games? We've had software emulation in the PS3 in Europe since day 1. That means there is nothing physical to take out, they're not saving money by doing this. They are just flicking a virtual switch in the system that says "no to B/C".

I see the point of the other ports being removed. Though aren't USB ports and memory card readers 10 a penny these days? If anything you'd have though they would have removed something costly like a smaller HDD...

Still this whole thing defies logic. Still good news for the PS3. But still mind bending with b/c.

Here in the US, people didn't take too kindly to this $599 "uber device" - hence getting pounded by the $399 XB360 and the $249 Wii. You can just buy the $399 one and take the extra and buy a $129 PS2. That's what Nintendo was touting back in the NES to SNES days since the SNES was incompatible...

I don't go putting my digicam cards in my game consoles to see my photos, nor do I need a super large hard drive or 4 USB ports to charge my controllers (that's really all they're used for on a PS3).

Sony did right finally. Also, the industry did say Sony released the PS3 a year early. Well, it's been about a year and the real, $399 PS3 has finally arrived.

I can't wait to get one....

Actually, even the European PS3s had the PS2's GPU built in. It was the CPU (the Emotion Engine) that was removed and replaced with software emulation. I guess these new PS3s do away with the GPU as well.

Really lame.

Just get a PS2 and be happy with the games you got, Jimmi. It'll be better than almost anything you can get on the PS3 right now anyway.

bad move too cut the support for ps2 games, good price but still a bad move though .... :(

The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).

Haha. That's funny....considering how many people have bought a PS3 to have such a big influence on this aspect. I get upset with Sony as much as anyone....but I wouldn't mind having a PS3...and at this price it makes it more likely that I'd eventually get one. But backwards compatibility makes it an absolutely worthless machine to me. The Wii and 360 are better machines than this "cheaper" version b/c they can play previous gen games (maybe not all, but some) whereas the NEW PS3 40GB Version (that is coming out 2 years after the 360 and 1 year after the Wii) cannot play anything from the massively successful PS2 and it's library. There is no need to have a PS2 as well as a PS3 when the PS3 is supposed to be the uber system. The PS3 should take care of both gens of games. That is ridiculous! And didn't Sony mention not too long ago that they wanted to have just 1 machine? It's like Sony WANTS to make me not spend my money on their products :p

It's a matter of how far advanced a company wants to make its next gen console.

Even the 360 isn't ENTIRELY backwards compatible and my understanding is the 360 has to download a compatibility patch for each XBox game you want to play on it.

The Wii is just a slightly more advanced GC with a regular DVD drive and motion controllers, so backwards compatibility on that system is a breeze.

Sony wanted to be really far advanced and did so with the Cell proccessor, the latest GPU and Blu-ray, which essentially made backwards compatibility too hard without having some of the old chips in there.

This new unit plus a PS2 is cheaper than the older $599 PS3 by itself...

No they are aiming for full SW emulation, but were rushed to market by MS and merely slapped in the EE+GS and said: "We'll fix it later." I wonder if they will charge "Core" owners to upgrade once they achieve full S/W emulation?
gloss is correct - the Emotion Engine was removed at European launch, but the Graphics Synthesizer remained. Something to do with the trouble emulating the processing speed of the GS.
It(graphics synthesizer) was placed between the Reality Synthesizer (RSX) and its connections to the HDMI transmitter by Silicon Image and a Sony in house chip called CXM*02*R. As expected, the 32 MB RD RAM chips, legacy of the PS2, have been removed as well. This new setup enabled Sony to cut the CXD9208GP chip, which previously connected the EE+GS chip to the CXM*02*R and the RSX.
The Chip is estimated to cost about $30, which is minimal , but this "core" model is for the price conscious users(and the whiny ones too :p). Like I have said before if you want the features you can pay for them.

I'm sorry but for the people whos now talking about this isn't good and no BC....there are over 120 million PS2's out there(practically every gamer has one) and this machine is for ones that want to take that plunge into the next gen playstation without the bulky price....good move sony. Everything is there....wifi, HDD, HDMI, Blu-ray,2 USB ports...BC wasn't that big of a deal to most.

USB is still there for all the card reader extentions your heart desire. This is how Sony will get those PS2 clinger into the next gen.

Everything is still there besides 2 ports and BC. I think Sony will grab a few heads on this model but the games are still needed.....the games are starting to flow in and thats the real thing that will pull it all together.

I'd go out and buy a PS2 except for the impossibility of playing one. Unless I plug it into my amp and play by ear? Since my TV hasn't got a composite or S-video in.

Sorta scrubs a PS2 off the 'to buy' list...

What are you talking about? What DOES your TV have then? I guarantee you can get a converter box for cheap.
The PS2 hooks up in the same manner as the GameCube.

Got an email from Dabs or somewhere with the new PS3 price.

Whilst it's cool and all they're also stocking the 360 Pro for £200.

Cat and mouse. Until Wii sales die down I suppose we won't see a price cut there.

Interesting that they're knocking the price of the 60GB Model from £425 to £349. Typical... I thought it was late enough in the year for the price to be fixed for Christmas, but it appears I bought mine 3 days too early :( Ah well, I got a ton of games and Blu-Ray movies bundled in for that price, I imagine the new price won't be so heavily subsidised.

BBC Have got in on the story too (linky)

Actually Sony's official news story confirms this, but interestingly they're killing off the 60GB Model:

"Remaining on sale while stocks last, the 60GB model represents outstanding value for the keen gamer wishing to upgrade to the High Definition capabilities of PS3. Once stocks are exhausted the new 40GB model will be the only one available in the SCEE territories."

So let me get this right (I'm not a gaming guru):

They dropped 60Gb to 40Gb and dropped B/C?

That's fine if you don't need to play PS2 games, right?
