Rumor: $399 40GB PS3....this week?

So let me get this right (I'm not a gaming guru):

They dropped 60Gb to 40Gb and dropped B/C?

That's fine if you don't need to play PS2 games, right?

yup basically. I guess they think that their library will be big enough this fall to accommodate losing the huge (and still going strong) PS2 library.

A big question is if PSone games are still B/C since they were completely software emulated unlike PS2 games which still used the PS2 graphics chip.

This new unit plus a PS2 is cheaper than the older $599 PS3 by itself...

This is has been my thinking all along. I've currently an original "brick" PS2, still going strong. A £299 40GB PS3 is *very* tempting, especially when I can pick up a PSTwo if/when the PS2 dies, carry enjoy playing all my PS2 titles, and still have paid less than a 60GB model. The B/C isn't 100%, anyway, is it?

what about on the 360? For a lot of people (me included) it only has 2 USB ports available so whatcha gonna do? If you are paying $170USD for a game you can afford a $10 USB hub

and it makes no mention that this will be available in the US.

Also, it will retail for 299 GBP, which is about US$600?

So, I *think* we are stuck with the $499 and when that runs out, the $599...

I think this will come stateside after the 60 is done then there will only be the 60 and 80. The 40 is garnered at persons wanting the PS3 and don't care about BC and I guess we'll see how it turns out.

Really...looks like you WILL be needing the wii pad to play wii fit unless we could stand on the remote without it breaking.

I see no reason for you to bring that up when your console of choice is pushing out extra things to buy everyday to play a game...required or not.

What extra things to buy?
Wii remote, nunchuck are needed. The rest aren't.

It's not like you have to buy USB hubs, HD video cables and other things that should have been included in the box to begin with.

May not be a game but the pad is needed to interact with the product....I don't see wiis coming with a foot pad.

The 40gig has everything you need to play a PS3 game and more....if you want extra usb ports then thats on you...2 is enough so try again to come up with some lame reason why Sony screwed up.

Don't have to, they aleady removed the PS2 compatibility.

Crazy thing is my girlfriend was so pro-Sony. With this announcement she lolled too. It must only be the hardcore fans who aren't laughing at this whole b/c situation.

New iMacs this Tuesday, £100 off but with a lock out chip to prevent installations of XP 🙄 .

They are probably still losing money so cutting a few corners is gonna get it looking good for the general consumer. But it's clear you don't like Sony...maybe even MS..hell its clear you don't like HD period so one wouldn't expect you to think anything different.

They should lower the price and give you the same system. In essence they are not lowering the price at all b/c this is not the same system that is at a higher price. They are introducing a new PS3 to the mix.

Try playing Wii Fit without the balance board, or Virtual Console games without the Classic controller (yes, they can technically be played with GameCube but for some games that works HORRIBLY, to the point of being nearly unplayable).

I like MS, they've done a stellar job. (unlike some) I owe Sony no favours so I'm not going to buy a system that isn't appealing and with a high price it's even less important.

A £300 40gb PS3 with b/c would be perfect at this stage. That's where I stand.
