They said they will phase out the 60 and keep the 40 but made no mention of the 80 availability.

Bless

But Sony are not releasing an 80gb for Europe/UK unless IGN have updated the earlier article which just checking they havent.

Sony want 1 SKU for Europe, and this will be the 40gb version.

The chances are we will never see an 80gb model, not that it matters to me I still have a 60gb USA PS3 :p

^I'm wondering if this will be needed for all versions.....which will still make his point not sound....he's actually complaining about 2 USBs and having to buy more things to play PS3 games when(if this is the case) looks like all the consoles might share this fate......were all in the same boat.

Like GPL said above....all the consoles have 2 USB ports.

Solution: buy a USB adapter...problem solved...get over it.

Bless

What does Rock Band stuff have to do with a 40GB PS3? Is it the 2 USB ports like every other system out there? Must every thread get totally derailed by trolling? :(

As much as people are screaming about the B/C issue, and as much as Jimmi is pouting about the 2 USB ports, how many people are honestly going to care that much? Sony can piss off a bunch of jaded gamers, like Jimmi, who probably wouldn't have bought a system until it was sub $300 or less but sell it to thousands more who go "hey! $400 PS3? hmm... Metal Gear? Final Fantasy? Gran Turismo? Socom? Coming out in a few months? Nice." Or they can keep the price high and have everyone saying "pfft... $500 my ass.. hmm? $350 X360? sure!"

Maybe I'm the only person who reads gaming news or something.

Considering that the game hasn't been released, it's anyone's guess as to whether or not that ends up in the final released version, or if the guitars are self-sufficient with bluetooth and don't need a dongle.

Either way it doesn't matter, you point is moot yet again - thanks for clarifying. I don't see any correlation between having to buy something extra to play Rock Band, considering that the even the crippled Ps3 has USB ports. But do continue with the mud slinging, Jimmi...we all do look forward to it every day.

This is the link you were after.

I've stayed out of this so far but people blindly and rather smugly dismissing that without getting their facts straight was just too much too resist!

Looks rather embarrassing eh?!

Yes, especially on your behalf because Jimmi wasn't talking about Guitar Hero and neither was anyone else.

Thank you very much :)

Calling Ed H for a reply :)

I like the replies here. First it doesn't use dongles, then it does but it's a lie, then a shot with 2 of them is shown :D

Congratulations!
You can play Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3 on the Ps3 without having to buy anything extra.

Again -
Jimmi's point = moot.
Thank you for playing, we have some nice parting gifts for you.
Rod, tell him what he's won!

Aww rats. That'll teach me to post past my bedtime.

I did forget to mention that guitar Heroes only supports two players locally so the two USB ports argument is irrelevant in this case anyway.

Let's stick to the topic:

The new 40Gig PS3...

Looks like Japan will be getting it Nov. 11:

Sony plans to cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console by 10 percent in Japan and launch a new model, in a bid to ignite demand in the run-up to the critical year-end shopping season.

The move follows a similar announcement from Sony on its European game operations last week as the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate plays catch-up with Nintendo's hot-selling Wii.

The PS3 has lagged the Wii in sales since the devices were launched late last year due to the Sony machine's high price and scarcity of strong game titles.

Sony said Tuesday it will lower the price of the PS3 with a 20GB hard drive from about $425 (49,980 yen) to about $385 on October 17.

It will also start selling its 60GB model for about $470. Sony has not so far suggested a price for the 60GB model, but it currently retails for about $510.

Besides the price cuts, Sony, which competes with Microsoft and Nintendo in the game industry, plans to launch a new PS3 with a 40GB hard drive for about $340 in Japan on November 11.

That is still considerable higher than the approximately $210 price tag for the Wii.

Although the price of the 40GB model will undercut the 20GB machine, the new 40GB set lacks some functions that the 20GB model offers, including compatibility with game software designed for the PlayStation 2.

Lowering prices will likely help drive PS3 sales in Japan, but the machine's competitiveness still falls short of that of the Wii, analysts said.

"As underlined by the delay in the Gran Turismo launch, there has been only limited progress in addressing the problem of software shortage," Mizuho Investors Securities analyst Etsuko Tamura said.

Sony last month postponed the launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, the latest installment of Sony's popular in-house racing game, to December 13 from October.

Personally 1 SKU is always best.

However looking at it further objectivly I have to give a thumbs up to Sony thinking about it.

The fact that for £299 / €449 folks will be able to pick a ps3 to play games and have the benefit of wifi built in and blu-ray movie playback.

Ok so it loses the media ports ? whoope doo. To be honest I have NEVER used mine bar the first time I was messing about with the ps3. And so it loses 2 USB ports ? Whoope doo. I have never plugged in more than 1 usb device into it at any given time.

So realistically Sony have done the right thing. They have a machine that has wifi, blu-ray, 40gb HDD priced only €50 more than a 360 premium with only 20gb HDD, DVD, no wifi...

That's a great big step.

So they have taken away BC ? But I'm sure if you have back catalogue of PS3 games, the chances are you have a PS2 - so your just going to have to keep it out if you want to play it. But the chances are most people won't regardless, especailly if shops offer similar Trade your old console + 5/6 games and get a PS3 for €199/249 as they did with the 360, then I can imagine a lot of old ps2's getting traded in for the upgrade.

Sony have obviously looked objectivly at each marketplace and decided whether right or wrong (but at least they decided) on specific SKU's for each territory going on sales and store/retailers feedback.

Yes we would all love a 120gb, 5x blu-ray multichanging, coffee and tea making PS3 with a robotic hoover attachment for those quiet times in a teenagers life ;) for $150 - but it isn't going to happen and those of us still bitching need to take a long walk, find a bridge, and then proceed to get the hell over it. Either that or go to Egypt and enjoy that leisurly swim in De Nile :D

Exactly! I find it amazing that people are calling the 40 GB PS3 "gimped" because of less USB ports and no BC; it still has just as many USB ports as Wii and 360, right? and this thing has double the hard drive space, plus WiFi, plus Blu-ray, compared to a 360 Premium.

If the 40 GB PS3 is 'gimped' compared to the 80 GB PS3, then the 360 Premium is 'gimped' because of the Elite.

The 40 GB PS3 can play all PS3 games with full features. The only system of this generation that is gimped is the 360 Core (can't utilize lots of features XBox Live without a hard drive, can't even play lots of games).

The fact that for £299 / €449 folks will be able to pick a ps3 to play games and have the benefit of wifi built in and blu-ray movie playback.

The built-in wireless, and blu-ray is a huge bonus for me. Even with the reduced price of the 360 Premium ( currently £249 ), add in the wireless module £54.99 ), and then the hd-dvd drive ( £109.99 ), it comes out more expensive than the 60GB PS3 ( £349.99 ), never mind the 40GB.

The only thing against the 40GB PS3, is the 60GB being only £50 dearer, while stocks last, that is....

It's Official In The US.

Here it is:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071018/ap_on_hi_te/sony_playstation

Sony announces new, cheaper PS3 Thu Oct 18, 10:50 AM ET

Sony Corp. on Thursday cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console in the U.S. and announced an even cheaper model that will arrive before the holiday shopping season.

The top-line PlayStation model, with an 80 gigabyte hard drive, now costs $499, down from $599. That effectively eliminates the lower-end model, which has a 60-gigabyte drive and has sold for $499.

A new low-end model with a 40-gigabyte drive will go on sale Nov. 2 for $399.

Unlike the other PlayStation 3 models, the new one won't be able to play games made for the PlayStation 2. In a statement, Sony said this was due to a more extensive lineup of games of the PlayStation 3.

The U.S. launch of the 40-gigabyte model was widely expected, since Sony has already announced it for Japan and Europe. It narrows the price gap with competing game consoles, but the PlayStation is still the most expensive.

Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 costs $350 and Nintendo Corp.'s Wii costs $250. The PlayStation 3 has been trailing them both in U.S. sales, and the Wii has been a breakout hit for Nintendo, with more than 9 million units shipped. Sony has sold 5 million PlayStation 3s since they went on sale in November last year.

According to this site, Sony REALLY needs to do this...

http://www.nexgenwars.com/

And you get the 5 free movies (for what it's worth...)

Yay! I ordered my 40GB PS3 from Sony! I took advantage of the free shipping and will also be getting the $100 credit. So, the PS3 is only costing me $299 plus tax! It comes with Spiderman 3 and I also get the 5 free Blu-ray movies. I bought it from their online store so I don't know if/when it will be available in retail stores.

This is defintely what Sony needs to kick up sales. The price just hit the sweet spot for me. I just wish it was available in the white color that Asia is getting...black is not going to match my Wii and Core Duo iMac.

Yea, I was about to post this. They are already backordered. I imagine that if the unit doesn't post to your account on time, your out of the $100 credit...

I ordered during the preorder. I think the free shipping ended on Thursday. But it was supposed to start shipping today.

You may want to check with what's going on, with the games Sony plays (yes, pun intended).

You'll get the free shipping since you ordered before the deadline.

I don't know about the $100 credit off. That deal may end, and then they finally ship your PS3 and you won't be eligible anymore for the credit as your card wasn't charged until after the deal expired...
