I've heard a few times that iOS 14 will be sort of like iOS 12 in the sense that it's more focused on performance. If that's the case...then supporting everything that got iOS 13 would make sense, since 12 didn't drop anything either. Dropping only the iPad mini 4 seems like an interesting move though. I still have one of those in my house and it runs great with 13, so far.

The reason I first bought an iPhone-the 4s I think, was because I had bought a Motorola Droid as my first smartphone. It probably wasn’t right at phone launch but it wasn’t 6-8 months after it was released either. About 1 year later an app came out, I installed it, and it didn’t work. After web searches and phone calls to my cell provider I found out I needed a different version OS. One that my less than 2 year old phone wasn’t able to install.

I don’t know if that still happens with Android OS phones or if that is no longer the case but the iPhones I’ve had have been upgradable for at least 3 or 4 OS upgrades. Some worked better than others but I could count on 4 years before the OS was unsupported. I’ve had more hardware problems than IOS problems with old iPhones.

If true, I have a mixed feeling about it:
+ more people will get access to the latest/greatest of iOS;
- the fact that it will be able to run efficiently on older devices would probably mean the lack of anything super exciting as compared to iOS 13. So it will be like a maintenance/evolutionary release, kind of a Snow Leopard of iOS?

Background: I am not a software developer, so bear with me.

I wonder what compromises must be made to allow backwards compatibility that far? Maybe they're minimal, but there must be some adverse effect on the OS as a whole.

No way should Apple waste precious resources supporting iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 in iOS 14. Kill them.

that would be nice for SE and 6S users, but... why not the Air 2 ? 🤔

iPadOS is now much more sophisticated and higher-end and requires new hardware. Air 2 owners should upgrade now immediately to take full advantage.

FWIW, I replaced the battery in my 1st Gen SE at the Apple store for $49 last year, and now my standby time is twice that of a Gen 2 (128gb) SE with its original battery. These right-sized phones are perfect; and as long as there’s an iPod touch running the lates iOS, I’ll always have a backup available.

Great... another year of developing for that tiny screen. :-/

Don’t forget the iPod touch. There are a lot of them out here being used and it’s recently been updated to A10.

Rumors suggest Apple will add a laser-powered time-of-flight 3D rear camera to the next iPad Pro models and the iPhone 12 Pro, which will bring significant improvements in augmented reality experiences.

Trust, but Verified !

Still waiting on ALL those "revolutionary" AR apps Cook promised years ago !

It is my personal opinion that is a very nice feature addition, but that it will Miss Its Mark, wrt target Market.

It is a Best Fit for the females who use their iPhones by themselves & with their girlfriends.

But that's NOT who buys the most expensive iPhones offered by AAPL each year.

So it will very-likely Miss Its Mark !

The new 3D rear sensor could bring the Depth Effect closer, much closer potentially, to BIG, FAST lenses.

The 3D rear sensor very likely requires 6 GB of DRAM just to function properly, which probably means, the starting price is north of the least-expensive 2019 iPhone 11 Pro !

Make NO mistake, the least-expensive 2020 iPhone 12 Pro, with 5G support, could easily be listed $150 USD north of the least-expensive 2019 iPhone 11 Pro !

So, $1,149 USD for the "base" 2020 iPhone 12 Pro, & $1,249 USD for the "base" 2020 iPhone 12 Pro Max !

Just replaced the battery in my 6s. Had a third party battery it didn't last a year. Drained on average 70% overnight. Now have one that gives me battery health status and is working great so far. I will be upgrading next fall the 6s is a bit dated had it since Dec 2015 I think. Need more than 64GB next time.

hmmm... looks like Apple is abandoning the planned obsolescence strategy and opting for the wider user base strategy to hang them in the iOS subscription models of Apple+ and games and app sales.

never the less, its good for the consumer. But its not if they support the older models, its if does it work great with the older models? As for me, I am running the latest iOS 13 on older iOS devices and its fantastic I must say. So if they continue the trend... great!

OR... they could be releasing newer iOS upgrades that work slow on older iOS devices to psychologically make me people angry with their "outdated" hardware to buy into the newer models!

iOS 13 runs really well on the iPhone SE except for the battery life. However, I do think it would make sense for them to drop support for it if they released a new 4 inch iPhone.
Same here. I have the SE for almost a year now and the battery life has become shorter between charge. I could be looking at something for about a minute and see the battery drop. I hope they do include the iOS14 for the SE and I don't see why they wouldn't even if the "SE2" will be expected to come out around March.

I was hoping my iPad Air 2 would get at least one more iOS version supported, as I am about to pass it along to my son (I just bought a "Air 3"). Kinda bummed.

Not very happy about the iPad Mini 4 being stuck on iOS13 - it was only discontinued in March 2019.

As long as they keep iOS 13 performance and get rid of iOS 13 battery drain issues.. :p

Yeah I can definitely say, with a brand new Apple battery, that my SE battery life is way worse than when it was new running whichever iOS was current 2.5 years ago. If I hardly use my phone all day, then it won't die on me. I do not leave the house without a power bank.
