Apple has been “innovating” incrementally the same way the auto industry has been doing for decades. Tweak the design and components a little here and a little there then every 3-5 years drop a new model and/or major redesign.

I mentioned in another thread that Apple would try to retain certain headline price points whilst raising other prices. I think they want the headline of iPhone 14 from $799 and iPhone Pro from $999. My guess is that come October, the lineup will be the following
iPhone SE: $449 (quiet price increase)
iPhone 12: $599 (i.e. no $499 former flagship phone)
iPhone 13: $699
iPhone 14: $799 (headline price)
iPhone 14 max: $949 ($150 premium for larger phone)
iPhone 14pro: $999 (headline price)
iPhone 14 Pro Max: $1149 ($150 premium for larger phone)

Thus Apple will make less money from the 14/14pro but will likely make more from the SE, 14 Max and 14 Pro Max (plus remove the $499 tier that the iPhone 11/2 year old flagship currently sits in). If they were going to be really cheeky they could also increase the SE to $499.

Well the 14 is pretty much a 13a with similar components and less supply chain issues than a year ago...would hope the price at least started the same. Yes, roughly 9% inflation over the last year, but not in China...

Except the mobile phone industry was eager (and probably still is) to encourage people to update on a yearly cycle. The car makers were not as enthusiastic. ;)

With both automotive and smartphone markets very mature at this point and the economies not at their best, we could expect the prices go down for both phones, cars & other gadgets. Unfortunately, we also see simultaneous price increases for basic necessities (electricity, fuel and food).

My guess:

iPhone SE: $429
iPhone 12 mini: $499
iPhone 12: $599
iPhone 13 mini: $599
iPhone 13: $699
iPhone 14: $799
iPhone 14 Max: $899
iPhone 14 Pro: $1099
iPhone 14 Pro Max: $1199
Pretty much in line with mine, although I'm not sure if they will continue to sell the 12 mini. I guess it depends on how much stock remains, but I don't see them producing any more.

I wouldn’t say that. The people who bought the mini LOVE it. It’s just that apparently there weren’t enough of those people for Apple’s liking.
It doesn’t help that they somewhat nerfed it for what we Mini enthusiasts wanted. What, at least those I’ve talked to and myself, wanted was a Pro type model in the smaller body. We got the standard model in the smaller body.

It’s more of the standard Japanese consumer electronics pricing and change strategy. Well known and executed for decades in consumer electronics goods.

Sounds good, but I have doubts about Apple keeping both iPhones 12 and 13 on sale, as this could totally sink their regular 14 sales. Keeping both 12 and 13 minis is also tricky, so in the best case scenario they will drop 12 mini out and will keep on selling 13 mini. If they drop minis altogether, then we could still hope for a reincarnated 5.7”-5-8” form factor in the spring 2023 to replace the current SE.

I enjoy my 12 mini and will keep on using it until it fails or does not support the latest iOS, whichever one comes first. If you think about it, having all the tech in such a small body was already a big achievement on Apple’s part, so putting in an extra camera, for example, could be technically impossible, as it is so physically tiny.

I think all previous models will be kept, based on precedent. It helps Apple hit different price points.

Personally think 128 GB iPhone 13 would be the sweet spot, if the rumours about the iPhone 14 are true.

A 13 mini at $599 is perfect price.

They’ll drop the 12 and 12 mini though…. Surely.

That pro price looks dead-on though. I’ll be very surprised if it’s not at least $1049

Going by the current rumours, iPhone 14 is not likely to offer anything major to the owners of iPhone 12 or 13, apart from some camera improvements for avid photographers and a slightly cheaper Max variant.

6GB of Memory, an 50% increase.

Better Modem, x65 should be more power efficient.

My guess is that there will be front end camera improvement as well.

Yeah the iPhone 13 series look like the sweet spot. 12 series only really make sense if you don't need more than 64 GB of storage.

They could have taken the 11pro camera system and put in the mini. Stainless steel sides.

Mini Pro. Woot.

Except that auto industry was doing it decades BEFORE ( think back to 1950’s and 1960’s) there was a Japanese consumer electronics industry. Every other year would be a minor body change (round headlights to rectangular etc).

Looking forward to upgrading my 12 mini to the 13 mini next year at $499 :p

So Apple selling the new iPhone at the old price is a price increase?

I love how you figured out a way to complain about the the new iPhone not being more expensive than the old one.

The new iPhone is basically old iPhone… And that old iPhone should be $100 dollar cheaper when the new iPhone release.

So Apple release iPhone 14 that is basically iPhone 13, selling at iPhone 13’s old price. Cancel the iPhone 13, continues sell iPhone 12 as low end model with same current price, instead get $100 dollar price drop. Wow… what genius marketing. And somehow people people are feeling they get great deal! Apple didn’t increase the price when everything is more expensive, how generous Apple is!

Cause it's gonna be basically the same phone, from the same production line with the same chip and some minor tweaks for the sake of marketing.

Thank you great leader Tim, for taking pity on the peasantry.

I hope they name the non-Pro chips 'A15 Bionic Supercharged'

My reality distortion field receptors are a little rusty and could use an oil change.
