oh, i agree with you on using the iPad in professional ways, i've done it myself. but did you use the surface 3 or the 2? i've heard the 3 was a big step forward, and it's the only one i've played with, but only for about an hour. photoshop seemed outstanding when i tested it. it's i'm sure a lot to do with personal preference tho.

The surfaces are about to turn the corner and take over... the Surface had one crippling issue.... Windows 8.1 was trash... with Windows 10 coming shortly and the next version of hardware the Surface is going to be a legit #1 contender in the PRO space. I wouldn't be surprised to see by October a launch of the new Surface in 3 sizes, all a fraction over each of the three ipad sizes and with the same or slightly better pixel density.

ipad - surface
7.9 - 8.1
9.7 - 10.0
12.2 - 12.9

I would easily switch from my current thought of going iPad PRO right to the Surface.... Apple has to consider that a false move with the PRO looses a large wave of customers for 3-4 years, and hurts their chance for a repurchase from those consumers in 2020.

Yeah, I think so. my iPad 3 gets 5+ days of light use, 2 days of medium use.. 6-8 hours of banging away on it... so basically I'm doubling the requirement and since the device is doubling (or even more) it should be able to handle that as long as the OS and HW are efficient.. the new iPad Air took a step backwards to save on weight and thickness... but I think (and others too have expressed) that thin/light is not always the best idea...

it's fine for the people who just play around with it as a toy, but if the PRO is going to be used for real work, they need to forget about saving 1mm at the expense of battery life.

it's very doable with today's technology, it what they need to choose to do.

well, sure, but i thought we were talking about a much more powerful machine.. can't increase CPU usage and touchscreen capabilities without a serious hit on battery life. there are rumored amazing leaps forward coming, but not this year.

100% agree

Question is:
Will it run on OSX or iOS?

iOS. iPad runs iOS, though I don't think Apple want us to think of it as "a tablet running iOS" any more than they want us to think of Apple Watch as "a smartwatch running Watch OS".

People may want OS X, but I think it more likely Apple will add the specific features people want into iOS, rather than force OS X onto a device that clearly isn't built for it.

yosemite has 'competent' touch capabilities, whereas Mavericks did not. wacom cintiq tablet users have managed to install both over the years, and this point was pretty noteworthy. i certainly hope it's an indication of something down the road, if not with this 1st gen product. maybe this is introducing an iPad similar to the macbook 'pro', as there's still no analogous Desktop Mac Pro in the iPad category either (which would amount to OS X, ports, etc). so a three tiered category (or more), similar to the Mac lineup. my shot in the dark: iPad, iPad Pro, and the Pad Pro. :D

so maybe next year. sigh...

Apple should make a Mac tablet. Much as Microsoft Surface tablet for Windows.

A fully compatible tablet with the Mac laptops and Mac desktops. Because iOS is not that compatible with Mac.

Where would you guys price the iPad Pro, trying to see where it would sit amongst the competition of other products including apple ones it is difficult to see where to place the device. I think apples biggest challenge will be to convince people why to buy it over a cheaper and liked iPad or the very much liked Macbooks.

The Direct Competion
Macbook Air 13 – 999.99
Surface Pro 3 (I5 128GB) W/O Typecover – 999.99
Surface Pro 3 (I5 128GB) W/ Typecover – 1129.98
Macbook Retina – 1299.99
Macbook Pro Retina – 1299.99
Other Various Laptops – 999.99 & Up

The Near Competition
Surface 3 (128GB) W/O Typecover – 599.99
Surface 3 (128GB) W/ Typecover – 729.98
iPad Air 2 (128GB) – 699.99
iPad Air 2 (128GB) W/ Logitech Covers – 789.98/799.98

Is the thought that the iPad Pro would allow for multiple apps/windows open. Maybe even a user file structure? If not I'm not sure why I'd need a large screen other than some large tablet size drive in movie ;)

Yes. I've owned a Surface RT, Surface 2, and now Acer Aspire Switch 11 which is essentially a Surface Pro 3. In all 3 instances, quite a nice notebook... but the Modern UI app situation tarnished the tablet experience.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Switch 11. But am frustrated with how close it is to what I'd like to see in a hybrid device. Having a comparable mix of apps that are available on iOS and it is "game over" IMO.

It is easier to produce hardware to close a gap than it is to grow "buy in" by developers and that is why I think Apple is going to be able to produce a winning hybrid. They've got the software, all they need to do is turn the crank and produce the hardware.

Microsoft has a much harder row to hoe. (their flip-flop-floundering with Win 8.0 -> 8.1 -> 10 isn't helping matters)

OS X is made for mouse/trackpad+keyboard
iOS is for touch input.

Simple as that.

You're talking about the iOS and OS X we know today. Who knows what they're working on for future product releases?

To just poo-poo someone's post with "Never" is very short-sighted. You nor I know what they're working on or what prototypes they're trying. iPhone, with its touch input, accounts for 70% of Apple's revenue. I think they'd be foolish to not be trialling some sort of OS X with touch input.

Just because OS X doesn't work on iPads etc. today, doesn't mean that it can't/won't work on them tomorrow.

or the fabled merged... :apple:OS

Please no. As much as I like Windows 8, the tablet interface wasn't the reason. It made clear to me that mobile and desktop OS shouldn't merge. Unless this iPad Pro runs a really enhanced version iOS that allows professionals to do some real multitasking, I don't see this selling. If I need to use a screen that big, I might as well pull out of my rMBP or get a Surface Pro 3 especially since this iPad Pro is probably going to cost a minimum of $700-$800 to get a decent amount of storage.

Dude, come back from Microsoft's build PR conference.

4k iPad?

I hope the iPad Pro is worthy of the Pro designation. It needs to be more than an iPad Plus. It needs to suit the needs of creative professionals who could use it for drawing and editing photos on the go. It needs better file management, it needs a pressure sensitive digitizer, and it needs to be fast with plenty of RAM for handling advanced apps and RAW image files. It also needs to come with more storage and come with Apple-designed accessories to enhance productivity.

I also hope that the screen size is closer to 11-11.9" than 12.9"—or at least reduce the bezel somewhat on the top and bottom.

or  OS

Actually that makes a lot of sense. With the naming of recent products like the Apple Watch, and the upcoming overhaul of the Apple TV, I could see Apple using their name whenever they get around to unifying their operating systems. It's going to happen eventually, but unlike other companies that compromise for one interface or the other, I think Apple OS will be smart enough to adapt on the fly and automatically switch modes of input.

regardless of the naming/moniker - is there any evidence to suggest this? i don't know much about this stuff, but I thought ARM was in no way set up to be interchangeable with OS X in any capacity, that it was its own beast meant for iOS. i think both platforms have been generally predicted to evolve along side each other rather than merge. correct me if i'm wrong

Kind off hate to say this because I had a Surface Pro 3 and hated it with the fire of a thousand suns, but without an adjustable prop this device is pretty pointless.

I'm starting to see a lot of salespeople out in the field with Surface Pros. This couldn't possibly just be a bigger screened iPad. At least I hope not.

Like someone else, said: it might simply be called Pad, and no more "i"Pad.

I don't like iPad Pro either. Naming something "Pro" sounds cheap IMHO.
Next up: iPad Turbo. Later: iPad Pro Turbo S Eco 2 :p

So, here's to the  Pad running  OS bringing Apple to the future.

EDIT: I know Apple names Mac Pro's and MacBook Pro's, but IMHO the same applies.
Yes, we are used to it, but I still think it's cheap.
I liked Power Mac more than Mac Pro.

i know apple doesn't like to include them but to be a workhorse for business it is necessary. No one is going to trust iCloud for sensitive information and right now there is a lack of reliable Lighting to USB drives that are reasonably priced.

As the new video shows i think we will see USB C in this.

Most enterprises run clouds now. They either run their own, or use Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, Basecamp or something similar. USB drives are an open invitation for malware. It's been an eternity since I've seen one in an office.

If this includes Wacom-level pressure sensitivity, I would be all over this.

Imagine a 15" rMBP with this as a secondary display.
