Is there another semi-handheld tablet on the market of this size? If not, at least people won't be able to complain that they're not trying anything new..

I believe there's a agalaxy note 12" version,

also the Surface Pro 3 is 12"

There is nothing "pro" about greasy fingerprints all over the screen. Also fine graphics work is not possible with a finger on a screen. What it needs is a trackpad and on-screen mouse pointer ... and a proper keyboard. Running OSX would help. Why doesnt Apple make a tiny laptop with these features? Oh yes - there is now one.

iPads are great for ebooks, web browsing, video conferencing and email but the new Macbook is for real computing on the road.

I doubt this will ever see the light of day.
And if it does, I think it's a really bad idea, from a business point of view, and I doubt that many people will buy it.

The whole tablet market is stuck right now and out of ideas. Everyone's basically still using an original iPad 1, with better specs but with the exact same main capabiltities. Just increasing the screen size will change nothing. It only makes the device less portable and less "holdable", and as such defeats the whole purpose of a tablet. Increasing the size and adding new use cases will be a huge challenge. The market for people who like to daddle on their tablet, or do it professionally, is tiny. That can't be it. There are limits for things you can do with a touch screen.

Thinking about it now, as much as i would like for this ipad to release, also making arguments as to why it would be great its now starting to make less sense. According to some tech podcast and seeing in the wild (not a big pool i know) but it seems people buy and like keyboard cases for their iPads. It makes sense, for many outside possibly their phone this takes as the main or only computing device, add the fact that the iPad is super simple and fun to use. Also in some cases it is more portable and better to carry around then a laptop. It's hard at this point to not see this in many ways as a reactionatory device due to rising sales of Surface pros. Of course no where near the amount of ipads and or possibly macbooks but it is selling. Also their hasn't been any kind of mention, leak, hearsay, nothing on apple moving towards a touch friendly version of OSX (can still happen i.e. swift announcement) even with WWDC being a little over a month away. And another thing to consider is the Retina Macbook and force touch for trackpads, why work so hard on that technology to then in a couple of months release another product who's main interaction method wouldn't be it.

Microsoft is kind of lucky in that the surface is it's main and only product for windows (not including other manufacturers hardware). It's also arguably the go to device for now for the one of the best windows experience so that is helping it sell more as it's the most in your face choice. And now with the surface being out for a couple of years now it has some mindshare whether it's good or bad. Also then continuing with their philosophy of having the same experience to an extent for all windows devices is slowly bearing some fruit. But they had to ride a tough wave to get the surface to where it is now.

If it is released and can run OSX and iOS apps and is atlease as strong as my 2012 macbook pro 13 then i will deal with the sure lack of ports in exchange for the ease of carrying a tablet versus a laptop. I don't think their are enough people with that share my rationalization for purchasing one to confidently justify the R&D and marketing money that has gone and will go into this iPad pro. It will sell just off the strength of the apple name and new apple thing, but with already declining sales on iPads and tablets in general it's already starting to look bleek for this iPad Pro. But then again who knows.

As someone who does not do anything processor intensive on their Mac this is exactly what I want. A big iPad that runs full OS X.....if I want a keyboard I will get a case. I am getting tired of going between my laptop and my iPad, and I don't really need a real computer anymore. Using an iPad still isn't practical for some things that just need OS X and I have been saying this for years: give me a bigger iPad and OS X and I can ditch my physical computer all together. Also as a music teacher I try to carry all my sheet music on my iPad, I would LOVE a bigger screen. Something is lost in complicated piano music that has a lot of notation on it because it is squeezed down and I just can't carry a full score on it with the small screen.

The cool thing about surface pro 3 is that it runs a complete desktop OS... If the iPad pro just runs IOS it may become just an oversized iPad with a pen... Maybe it will fill the needs of some people but no so many.

An overszed ipad with a pen serves some purposes--without a pen it would be far less useful...imo

I really hope this is evidence of upgrades coming to iOS. I can't imagine much of a market for a giant iPad as limited as it is.

On one hand I agree, on the other I do look forward to the release of more information on this model. I'll be the first to admit I love big displays. Even to the point of putting up with less portability, large spacious screens are very useful to me.

Without a haptic component perhaps Apple can deliver this model in a reasonable time frame.

Would love to see a iPad Pro that supports a better stylus so we can truly use it to draw and annotate like on paper. I think that would be the best step forward for a iPad Pro, Also with more RAM (4GB) and ability to run a stripped down version of OS X or even a full integrated version of OS X / iOS.

I can see how USB-C can also be useful for peripherals

Apple hardware team is innovating / moving faster than their software team... the software team has to make this ipad forward thinking.

You do know that this has been thoroughly debunked for years now, right? It may not be possible for you, but — news flash — others have already done it.

But with a finger it requires a lot zooming in/out and a lot more time to achieve the same results just like a bicycle can get you to the same destination but it takes a lot more time and effort than car.

Prepare for yet another disappointment. It will be crippled, it will not be what we want, and it will not be all that it could/should be.

Don't get your hopes up too high.

Just make a Macbook Air with detachable keyboard/extended battery already apple, stop messing about with limited iOS devices
You mean unleash an OS highly unsuited for touch input onto a device that uses touch as its only input method for one important use case (detached screen)?

You would need to add the equivalent of Windows' Metro interface as an alternative UI for a limited subset of features. Windows 8 has gotten better at this but it still sucks if you want to a certain task and have to navigate the desktop interface on a touch screen.

If this thing is actually going to be released, then can we really expect anything other than an oversized iPad at this point?

As has already been said, why would Apple release the Macbook, and spend so much time and/or resources in releasing an all new expensive notebook, if this new iPad device was meant to replace the thing they just released. It's exciting to think that Apple has come up with a new breakthrough device that may change everything, but I would be far more excited if they hadn't just released a notebook that is supposed to drive the Mac in future years once all of the other tech catches up to it's form factor.

Count me in the camp as not expecting a whole lot from this thing.

I would suggest to first try out operating OS X via a touch screen (either by remotely connecting to a Mac from an iPad or using the iPad as an external screen).

Why never?

For one, I think that would cannibalize Apple's MBA and new MacBook lines. I'm pretty sure Apple wants to sell more devices, not less. Other companies like MS are just trying to sell any devices period, so they release hybrids.

I don't want the complexities of a desktop OS in tablet form. I believe that some minor tweaks to iOS could go a long way in making an iPad Pro very useful.
  • Some visibility to the file system
You have some visibility to the file system via iCloud Drive. You have access to iCloud Drive on iOS devices from within apps for opening or saving documents and for things like inserting images.

Apple simply wants to make money selling devices... any devices.

They don't care if you buy a $1000 laptop or a $1000 tablet.

It's income regardless.

How hard would it be really, to make some changes to OSX for tablet use that make it touch friendly? Third party devs would need to get on board, but this is Apple, it wouldn't take long. And with Windows already supporting touch, development is going to continue to move in that direction, IMO.

I mean, I doubt they'll do it, but I think it's dumb if they aren't actually exploring it. Still, I hope to be proven wrong and we'll get an iOS-ish OSX on a 12 inch iPad with stylus.
