Yay, maybe I can buy my stealthserve instead of hacking up my iBook to work again! (and finding a good spot to hide it) (hopes for 2 ethernet ports on the Mac Miniserve)

No. But it makes sense to do it this way THIS TIME if Apple has done something earth-shattering with the product line.

Microsoft has a lot riding on Thursday. But consider that the media already knows everything there is to know about Windows 7-- the stories have already been written.

So consider this timetable:

- Monday: announce incredible financial results during the worst recession in 70+ years-- creating initial buzz around Apple
- Tuesday: completely surprise the market with an incredible product innovation, generating a sudden rush of interest, curiosity and buzz
- Wednesday: because Tuesday's move was unexpected, people are still excited about it
- Thursday: Windows 7, yadda yadda yadda.

Not saying it's going to play out this way... but I could see Apple plotting this.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

That makes alot of sense. Windows 7 has got nothing but positive press. Apple needs to make a move... now..

Not very far fetched at all and others have speculated the same scenario. We shall see. "Apple Store is down!" will draw much speculation.

What time are silent updates usually?

Just curious if anyone knows if there is usually a precedent for what time silent updates are added online. Is it at midnight or noon, or some other time?

iPod Touch 2g and 3g FM

FM support please?
I mean "stay close to your iPhone".
Please :apple:??? Please? Please? Please? Please?

This is a differant rumor but I would love it. After I got rid of my Zune120 after getting my 3GS I missed my radio. There are some radio apps, but those are for a single station, a full blown FM app would make me soooooo happy

I hear what you are saying. And in so saying, you identify as not the target market, IMO. You clearly know what a server is, and is for. If this Mini is targeted at the "home server" market, it's targeted towards those who don't know or care what a server is or does. "It Just Works" - but what does it do for Joe User that his PC/Mac does not already do?

Besides, you and I probably won't buy a MiniServer, as has been stated, we have cases laying around we could throw together, slap an OS on, configure as we want it, and spend very little. Apart from the cool factor, it's not going to sell to us.

I don't see it going into the Enterprise either... but then again, I don't know a thing about the specs of this vapour machine. Yet. But it will have to do something the average user today cannot do.

They can't market Mini and OS X Server as a "home server solution." Maybe they have a new product, but why? OS X Client can do the things home users want. File sharing, printer sharing, etc. If anything, they can make a nice Wizard that sets it up for you. But I can't see them marketing a Mini with OS X Server, the setup assistant alone would cause those home users' eyes to gloss over.

I can't see them saying: "We have a revolutionary product for our home users. A Mini with OS X Server. Users will get to setup DNS, DHCP, AFP, Open Directory, PHD, VPN. Oh and if you mess up DNS, you might as well start over. We think this is going to change the home users experience and it starts at just $1099."

That is right folks, $1099. OS X Server is $500 for a unlimited client license, plus the base Mini at $599.

And all this speculation is far from the original post anyhow. Gruber said it will be one that "ships with OS X server." Small businesses don't need much more than a Mini for their solution. So it makes sense to offer it bundled. If anything, they will add a second NIC. Which would make me a little angry as I just picked a Mini up for my server.

I've seen silent updates detected in the early morning hours EST.

For a huge update like this, they might take it down a few hours earlier (probably early morning). I think the site is usually "under maintenance" for several hours.

Maybe they will just tack on a better setup assistant and leave the rest there?

Just in time?

Finally, I hope that a keyboard with a glass multitouch trackpad will come out. It would be nice to have a USB port on it that can actually power devices. The present situation is somewhat dissatisfactory. If not, I might get a Wacom graphic tablet. I hope that the new Touch&Pens are close to the glass surface of the MacBook Pros.

After being disappointed with its performance, its failure as a mobile phone and its shockingly poor battery life, I sold my iPhone just to get another one a few months after. These little things are addictive. But I'm out of the 14 days period (unlike my partner), so no return for me. Therefore I hope that the 3G remains the same. No FM radio for a little while now, poor battery life and upsetting iTunes dependency. I burned my finger with the first unibody MacBooks, I hope that I am not on a losing horse again. A new upgrade would virtually wipe off 40 % of the value of my overpriced little iPhone.

makes sense, release new hardware a day before Windows 7 and a new line of PCs from the various manufactures hits the sales floor.

No, the setup assistant isn't broken. You have to have a decent amount of knowledge to setup it up. So it isn't a case of just slapping a "better" setup assistant in. Unless that includes a complete training course.

Not to mention maintaining and setting up services beyond what the initial setup gives you. Not gonna happen. This is not going to be the "Windows Home Server" for Apple.

pleaaaase

PLEASE

PLEASE let this be true ! I can't wait to buy a new imac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am really excited

It won't make a difference. Nobody is going to run out and buy Windows 7 except geeks. The problem has always been for Windows that their user base which they have a monopoly with, either don't care about upgrades or don't want to take the chance of screwing up their computer on an upgrade.

It is the one big difference between Apple and MS. Since most essentially make a conscious choice to buy a Mac, they are probably more technologically aware and want the newest thing.

And while I have heard some glowing reviews, I also hear people like Jim Louderback on TWIT saying he had to remove Windows 7 from most of his computers and was not especially a fan of it. Louderback is one of the biggest Windows fans I've ever seen.

I'm just hoping for a new Mighty Mouse. Mine's about to die and the new one sounds insane.

Hoping everything else gets a nice healthy bump to **** on Microsoft's parade this week. ;) :apple:
