What if the Apple logo is the Touch ID?
Too high up the device to reach comfortably
[doublepost=1494107982][/doublepost]Putting the sensor behind the phone would go against their traditions, looks insanely copy-cat-like, be uncomfortable for reaching, and would look plain boring.

I doubt they'll have touchID on the back since the leaked iPhone cases don't have holes.

If the sensor is on the back of the phone, they should be relatively straightforward to manufacture, so...why the continued talk of "severe" delays? I assumed the problems were due to poor yields on the under-screen fingerprint scanner.

I don't like the design of this , it's amost as tall as the S8 and wider than Samsung S8 !
The S8 is almost the same width of iPhone 7 , why can't apple do it ?? I hate the dimensions of the iPhone 7 specially the width I was hoping it to be narrower

From a practical standpoint, touch ID on the back just doesn't work. For one, you won't be able to unlock the phone while it's sitting on your desk, which immediately takes away 50% of your unlock options. Also, a case would have to have a cutout on the rear to accommodate, adding to the phone's vulnerability. Then there's the issue with car mounts - I often unlock while it's clipped into its dash mount to access the maps. (While stationary, of course). All seems like a step back.

i have a Huawei P9 Lite with touch ID on its back, and tbh, i used this maybe for 7 minutes altogether.. not practical at all on backside..

Epic fail if true. However just don't see it myself.
As the article says, the drawing is not in any way supporting evidence: The "equity research firm" CLSA came up with the story that the TouchID button would be on the back of the iPhone 8, and then they hired someone to make a drawing showing exactly that. The drawing is completely made up.

Tim Cook is an industrial systems engineer. That means that by training he values an optimized system above all else. Unfortunately, the system he is optimizing is the iPhone production system. That means that the system that is the iPhone itself is compromised in favor of the production system.

Tim needs to learn that the product ultimately matters more than the production.

What the hell? You are attacking Tim Cook because of a completely made up story, where the only evidence has been fabricated?

Is having bezelless so important that it's worth the fingerprint sensor on the back?

I guess I don't care as much. I'd rather have a bezel if it means the fingerprint sensor gets to stay on the front.
I would very much hope that Apple can do _both_ bezel-less and fingerprint sensor on the front. But yes, removing bezels completely _is_ important. It always you to put a 7+ or 6+ screen into a phone with the size of an iPhone 7 or iPhone 6, and that's a big deal. People want big screens, they don't want big phones.

Personally, on a scale from 0 to 10 I would rate bezel-less (and therefore a bigger display in a smaller device) as +10 and TouchId on the back as -8.

That would look so awful. And not even that, it would be very uncomfortable. Keep in mind, this rumored phone is the "Plus"-sized one - who has thumbs like that? (Or am I - in Apple tradition - holding it wrong?)

This is good to have the ID and home button on the back. I don't want Apple highjacking front screen gestures from games and apps. I hate that they highjacked the edges where previously released apps used swiping from the edges for controlling some valuable feature. Apple ruined those games. Apple, only use your own gestures on the home screen and your own apps, stop highjacking gestures when non-Apple apps are running.

if this ends up true, i hope they spent a LOT of time on finding the optimal position and did a lot of testing.

Putting the Touch ID on the back just to get an elongated screen with a ridiculous aspect ratio makes no sense whatsoever.
This. I'd rather have a big, fat bezel on the front if it's the only way to keep Touch ID there. It's not worth losing one of the best features of the iPhone just to have a slightly bigger screen. Between the iPhone 7 and MBP, this form over function stuff is really getting old. Just keep putting faster procs, more RAM, more storage, and a higher res screen in, and everything will be perfect.

If there is no way to touch unlock this phone, there's no way I'd buy this. My iPhone 7 will keep working just fine...if not better because I won't have to pick it up off the table and hold my finger on the back every time I want to use it.

that's an epic fail if true.
look how out of place and amateur it looks under that Apple logo.
and that's just the design/aesthetic aspect..the functionality and ergonomics are badly affected.

You don't use your thumbs on a rear sensor. You use either pointer finger.

A few months ago: iPhone X, 10 year anniversary, radically new design, edge to edge OLED screen, finger print sensor in the screen, 3d facial recognition, depth of field camera. Yay! Apple will nail it this time! Demand builds, stock price soars.

September: It's an iPhone 6 Galaxy

Am I the only one that can *never* get Touch ID to work?

This was a feature I was really looking forward to when I upgraded from an iPhone 3GS to the iP7. I've tried so many times to get it to work but I finally just gave up on it. So frustrating.

It will work for a day or two, and then completely forget who I am.

EDIT: To add insult to injury, the Touch ID sensor broke on my 1st iP7 and I had to get an ENTIRELY new iP7 to replace it. Even though I didn't use Touch ID, the home button functionality stopped and I couldn't even get into the phone unless I shut it off and back on again. The new iP7 has the same problem with never recognizing my prints. Is this some kind of joke? The iP7 will likely be my last iPhone purchase.

WTF .... The note 8 has already leaked and it shows a phone with out touch ID on the back which means they succeeded to add it underneath the screen and obliviously it's going to be released before apple iPhone .

And apple couldn't do it ???? Come on apple you're better than this .

Be interesting to see if the Note 8 can win the race to the under screen fingerprint sensor as that would be a major coup for Samsung this Fall.

Do you really think Apple under Steve Jobs would turn out something that doesn't work the way it was planned? They'd wait until next year. Sure the bigger screen and wireless and fast charging would be upgrades as would facial recognition, but all that equates to equalling what will be a 6 month old S8 design and features with a differently placed fingerprint sensor.

However, with the current design already woefully behind the competition and Ive having an army of industrial designers at their disposal, nevermind all their other resources, Apple also can't justify releasing only a 7s with upgraded internals for another entire year, as the flagship.

No current Apple consumer would even consider Android junk.

Ah, totally didn't think of that. Got a point there. Doesn't change, though, that it looks pretty off and awkward.

I'd also suspect a back sensor may get more easily scratched than a front one (as people tend to lay their phones on the back, not front) and also, what about all those people who use cases? All in all, it just doesn't seem very clever...

Last week rumors persosted that it would be in the screen. This week it's different. No one knows. I keep telling myself to just ignore all this... it's not working.

Yeap, NO ONE HAS A CLUE FACT!!! It's been a different rumour almost every single day... not to mention we've had different screen sizes mentioned all the time, now it's the phone will have small top and bottom bezels, but schematics show it won't.... these analysts and reports are totally clueless.
