Something that I haven't seen discussed is the possibility that the Touch ID sensor is integrated into the side, assuming it isn't on the front (and assuming that Apple doesn't continue its relentless march towards thinness above all else). HTC recently demonstrated a phone with a touch-sensitive frame and it looks like a pretty natural way of interacting with a phone, and certainly better than a sensor on the back IMO.

We're all going to buy it regardless, let's be honest.

yup... most of the people complaining probably haven't handled the Samsung S8. Obviously touch id on the back isn't the first choice. After handling the S8 at best buy, I hope the iPhone has a bezel less screen even if it means touch id is on the rear. Hopefully they won't put it right next to the camera. The larger screen in a smaller package is worth the trade off until they figure out how to place it behind the display.

When I had a Nexus 5X the fingerprint sensor on the back took some getting used to but it was quite useful when you grab your phone to use. When I switched back to the iPhone it was one of the things I missed the most. I think everyone who is complaining about it has never actually used a phone with the fingerprint sensor in the back. With Touch ID it would be really fast and I think it would be alright. The thing is it isn't that cutting edge anymore.

The only way to make it nice on the back is to integrate it into the Apple logo. I hate edge to edge displays since the meat of your hands always seems to press buttons. At least that's what the crappy Galaxies do.

Life long iPhone owner here, like i'm sure all of you are..... I personally would NOT like the finger sensor on the back. I might as well try the Samsung S8 out for the 1st time for crying out loud..
Honestly, If Apple can't put the sensor on the front it would feel like a Kick in the Nuts..!!!

So true on all accounts. Two kicks in the nuts.

Please Apple, let the touch ID stay where it is now on iPhone 7/7 plus. It works well and it is where it makes sense. I can't imagine to have to pick up the iPhone to put the finger on the back. Also, the vertical rumoured lens are very uggly.

I don't believe that the Apple designers are doing something like that we have seen in the rumours.

If it does end up moving to the back, at least now it won't be a huge shock to people....just like with the removal of the headphone jack.

It's STUPID to have the sensor in the middle of the back of the case. It would be far better to be either near the bottom or the top of the phone, if at the back. Also closer to the one side and not directly in the middle.
Anyway, what do I care, I don't even have one.

Imagine somebody walking into Steve Jobs' office and placing this design on his desk.

Couldn't have said it better. Not a chance in hell. To the point it is laughable. It reminds me of the Homer Simpson mobile

Apple's rumored "iPhone 8" with an OLED display and wireless charging will continue to have Touch ID, but there is a "high chance" it will be on the back of the smartphone, says Hong Kong-based equity research firm CLSA.

"iPhone 8" mockup with rear Touch ID sensor by Benjamin Geskin

An excerpt from a research note distributed this week by CLSA analysts Sebastian Hou and Brian Chen:CLSA created a diagram showing Touch ID placed slightly below the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone.

Samsung included a fingerprint sensor on the back of the Galaxy S8, but some reviews found it to be awkwardly positioned next to the camera. Apple placing Touch ID lower down could make it easier to reach.

The diagram also shows a vertically-aligned dual-lens camera, a widely rumored iPhone 8 feature seen in previous renders. There also appear to be additional modules next to the front-facing camera, likely for rumored 3D sensing and facial recognition functionality. Other features shown are identical to the iPhone 7.

The diagram suggests the iPhone 8 will be 144mm tall and 71mm wide, making it slightly larger than an iPhone 7 but smaller than an iPhone 7 Plus as expected. With a depth of 7.69mm, the iPhone 8 would be just a hair thicker than the iPhone 5s, if the dimensions CLSA lists prove to be accurate.

Touch ID on the back of the iPhone 8 appears to be a fallback solution given Apple's struggles to integrate the fingerprint sensor underneath the smartphone's display effectively enough for mass production. Leaked renders suggest Apple has explored a rear Touch ID sensor on at least one iPhone 8 prototype.

Other manufacturing challenges may push iPhone 8 production behind schedule by at least one or two months, possibly delaying shipments until October or November. Nevertheless, most analysts still think Apple will announce the iPhone 8 in September alongside the so-called iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus.

While some Apple fans will quip that "this same rumor surfaces every year," oft-reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities implied this year's shortage could be much more "severe" than in previous years.

[doublepost=1494121806][/doublepost]It's time for Tim Cook to channel his inner Steve Jobs and tell his team put the fingerprint sensor on the front. Just like Steve would have done. It may be hard but it's not impossible. JDI.

Ah, totally didn't think of that. Got a point there. Doesn't change, though, that it looks pretty off and awkward.

I'd also suspect a back sensor may get more easily scratched than a front one (as people tend to lay their phones on the back, not front) and also, what about all those people who use cases? All in all, it just doesn't seem very clever...

Sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into believing your own idea.

I personally had a Nexus 6P for a while, first Android phone in several years. I loved the sensor on the back. I was never huge on unlocking while on a desk, because if I was going to use the phone I always picked it up anyway (true with all my phones). Having it on the back was very easy to feel for, and was much more comfortable for me compared to iPhone 6/6+ which are wide longer phone that require somewhat awkward stretching of thumb (way shorter finger than index) in order to reach button; especially true of the 6+, my god imagine using one handed Touch ID with that LOL. It's possible, but not comfortable.

Diamond is hard to scratch, that's what the cover of Touch ID uses.

Not to mention that cases with cutouts on the back look SUPER tacky, at least anything that exceeds the camera hole...

Look at the Apple logo cutout cases and tell me that looks good with a straight face, I dare you.

We need a tough guy like you on these forms. I admire your work :p

Well this should be awesome for people who put a case on their phone o_O

Get ready to dig deep when unlocking your phone. I assume people will actually start to use face unlock more after the 8 release

I think we are all going to be a little bit dissapointed when the anniversary edition is released.
I have a gut feeling that the leaks about an anniversery 2017 edition are being mixed up with leaks of the next iphone 8 that will be released in 2018.

I love my 7 Plus. It's the best phone on the market. So it's no big deal for me this year. But if a nice 7s or 8 is released I am considering it for my second line. But I would much rather go with a 7s Plus than the 8 as it stands right now.

The people who knock up these "concepts" must all go to the same college to intentionally LEARN the art of aesthetic, symmetrical, mathematical imbalance and lack of harmony in design. I wouldn't be able to look at myself in the mirror, having posted a "concept" which had a recessed circle RIGHT UNDERNEATH the Apple logo.

Seriously guys, give up - do something better with your time - only DO NOT apply to Apple for a job, they haven't enough spare time to take time off recovering from laughing at your portfolios. Spare them the pain.

It will be on the back and you'll like it.
Then the 2018 iPhone will have it on front and you'll like that as well.
Based on current history of the iPhone release cycle, the 2020 iPhone will finally integrate Touch ID on the front screen. :D

Tim Cook is an industrial systems engineer. That means that by training he values an optimized system above all else. Unfortunately, the system he is optimizing is the iPhone production system. That means that the system that is the iPhone itself is compromised in favor of the production system.

Tim needs to learn that the product ultimately matters more than the production.
Well stated.

So, Tim Cook, long term employee of Apple for decades, supreme master of supply chain and supply chain management software suite design for Apple, in charge of that AND CEO, hand picked by Jobs himself to replace him - a LEGENDARY CEO, needs to "learn" from a random poster on an Apple forum, probably young enough to be his son, or Grandson?

Your hubris is your punishment. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
